  • maybe i want to catch bat rays and sharks...

  • Hi, i've got a shakspeare ugly stik (SPL 1100 7'0" Action:M, 6-15 lb.Line) and a shimano baitrunner st10000ra reel. I originally brought them for carp fishing but, i wonder if i can use the same for light sea fishing(i usually fish from the rocks and sometimes from the shore). Can sea water damage my my fresh water rod and reel ?

  • @vanam0nde yes it can, but all you need to do is wash your rods and reels with some fresh water and they'll be fine.

  • what is an ugly stick rod?

  • @fishing8490 it's a fishing rod made by Shakespeare

  • what is an ugly stick rod?

  • The camera man is an idiot.... really wanted to have a look at those hooks.

  • @TheVovozela LOL. i'll tell him.

  • can u use the same rod for fishing off the beach in new jersey?

  • @NGerold1013 I would think so, but ask the guys at your local tackle shop for advice.

  • @erfarome there is a great tackle shop there in Ensenada right next to the Santo Tomas Hotel, you can find everything you need there.

  • @Vengeancetastegood you will need it because it will be tiring holding your rod.

  • 7 foot rod*

  • Im gooing to florida soon and i have a 7 foot rod can ,will I need a rodholder or can i just hold it, plz im new to ocean fishing

  • Is this a good setup for florida?

  • @jont24 I would think so, but I really don't know, ask at your local tackle shop

  • Dan can I use a 5ft ugly stik kit from walmart to fish the surf

  • @MrDARDILL sure, but I think a 7 footer from Walmart or any olace else would work better

  • Plz answer I'm leaving in a couple of days

  • Can u use a 5ft ugly stik spinning combo

  • @MrDARDILL I'd use a 7 foot rod

  • Could I also use shads with twister tail on a jighead for surf fishing? What about the other standard freshwater lures like spinners or crankbaits? I'm pretty new to saltwater fishing so excuse me if these are stupid questions.

  • @masterknaster you can, a small spoon jig would work better, or the Gulp sandworm.

  • @dansportfishing thx, i bought the sandworms and some jigs this week and will be trying them out tomorrow, lets see how it goes.

  • @123bassangler I like to use a spinning, but I know people who use both.

  • Is surf fishing good in the winter in NC??!?

  • will this technique work in the north east US?

  • Excellent info!!!!! Keep it up!

  • hey dan. if you had to choose 1, which would you recommend? spinning reel setup or conventional?? and why??

  • @johnnymohani i personally would go with spinning because u can cast so much further and there alot more user friendly

  • Hey Dan gunna go surf fishing soon and I was wondering how far I should cast for halibut.

    Thanks, Ian

  • hi dan

i purchased the 6 inch gulp sand worms in natural color.

i leave for my trip in a few days and i just wanted to know the best rigging method.

im using a Carolina rig with a 1 ounce sinker like you stated here. i have to types of hooks. the size 4 Bait holder hooks and some small 1/16 oz jig heads. what one of those two hooking methods would be better to use along the beach?

    thanks.

  • I'd go with the Carolina rig, make sure you have some lighter singers too, I'd start off with 3/4 oz egg sinker. Also cut your worm in half too. Good luck!

  • wow i may not know much about fishing man but that little rod won't cut it when you got a 30 inch redfish on the other end...

  • why go ocean fishing for small perch do that in a lake. i want the big sharks and stripers

  • hey dan im going fishing down in Galveston tx in a few weeks. mainly im going to be using live bait but i bought some gulp shrimp to try. i couldn't find any sandworms up here in east texas. i plan to look for some down there but if i cant find any do the shrimp work as good when surf fishing as the sandworms do?

  • i'm sure they would work down there, I'm guessing i'd start off with the worms first.

  • is it a bad idea to try surf fishing with a 6 foot rod beacause when im at the the beach i see people with taller rods and i feel pretty stupid?

  • the people with the longer rods are fishing for bat rays and sand sharks, if you want to catch surf fish use a 6-7 foot rod.

  • @dansportfishing thank you very much ,very useful tip!!

  • hey dan.

    i have a ? about the bait.

u just throwing the the rig and wait the fish will bite or you using it like u using lure?

    ty

  • you just cast it out and work it back very slowly, the waves will do all the work for you.

  • How long is that Rod? Would a 6 foot work well?

  • yes it will, I like to use seven foot rod and at times will use a light action eight footer too.

  • thanks for the info. A lot of fisherman make the mistake of casting to far when they are surf fishing...ME included. This is helpful info.

  • hey dan i got a ? iam from rosarito and there's a wal-mart here but they don't carry the gulp salt water sandworm do you think i can find in chula vista's wal-mart.

  • I'm sure they would, I know the Turner's Outdoorsman in SD has them.

  • What's the best lb test for surf fishing??

  • for perch i'd suggest either 6 or 8 pound test, some of my friends fish with 4.

  • @dansportfishing

Can i use a 6 ft. Ugly Stick Rod??? And if i do surh fishing can i just put the rod on a rod holder and wait till the fish bite?

  • @FishingDude71 you can, but if you're fishing hard you shouldn't have time to use a rod holder.

  • @dansportfishing

    LoL =D

I'm fishing hard in Malaysia =D

  • @FishingDude71 you can, but if you're fishing hard you shouldn't have time to use a rod holder.

  • what would you recomend for halibut fishing in central/southern cal?

  • live bait or gulp will work too.

  • Oh ok Dan do u think you can make a video on sliding rigs plz

    ???

  • @canuhelpmeplz96 i have already done that, look at my other surf fishing videos.

  • hello Dan im just stoping by to ask a ?

i want to know can u buy sliding sinker rigs at Dick Sporting Goods????

  • I'm not sure if they sell the rigs there, but I'm sure they sell everything you need to make this rig. it's very basic tackle, sliding sinker and swivel.

  • so am i need the same information!

  • what do you need to know?

  • Im going along florida for specs and flounder in the summer, any suggestions on bait and fishing techniques?

  • @fishcity100 call a local tackle shop in the are and ask them, you need to know what the fish are eating.

  • Hey Dan are you based out here near Long Beach,CA? If you have a store I would like to be your customer and get tips face to face, thanks!

  • I prefer sandcrabs to ghost shrimp, personally.. I catch most surfperch with sand crabs, I guess people just dont like to get into the sand.

  • the Gulp will work great for that, if you want a live bait then I'd suggest ghost shrimp.

  • hi dan, which bait would you recommend for croaker?

  • Is mcgrath state beach south of ventura good ofr surf fishing? what kind of bait would i use and what kind of fish would i catch?

  • you should make a tv show

  • Dan,Thank you so much for always explaining things with great detail.Alot of fisherman DO NOT want to share info.I often use your advise here in North County San Diego and always bring in fish.I wish your Podcast was up and going and current.YOU ARE THE MAN...DAN!

  • and can this work in northern california???

  • can surf fishing be done on ayn beach in california or do only some beaches have fish in the surf??

  • yes you can use the same Gulp bait anywhere where there is surf perch and there are tons of them in Redondo.

  • hey i wanna try sur fishing in redondo beach california this takcle works good to fish there to i wanna try something new than just fishing in the pier ...my regular catch

  • Hay Dan,

Great video! Im fishing in Ventura So. Cal. and Im having trouble finding that bait. Can you send a link so i can find them. I did find shrimp and got the only one that had red in it. If I get any fish Ill post it. Do you think the shrimp will work?

    Mark

  • Mark, I use the shrimp for calico bass and rock fish, I don't use it for surf fish. The bait is called Sand Worn, its a Gulp bait. you can find it at any tackle shop.

    Dan
