just for the sake of history and context, as a fan i gotta add this - Rob McConnell and the Boss Brass tore,m up at the MJF 1981 - to borrow from the words of Diz. In this clip - Ian's solo at 2:31 -2:45 hits one of those rarest harmonic combos that make you realize that this is the best it'll ever get. fan TAStico. Played this one so many times I started to wonder if it is possible to wear a CD out like it happens when you play a vinly record too much... right on, all of'em, 2 kewl.
This has always been my favourite arrangement of Rob's. Absulutely brilliant! Terrific brass, solos, etc, and the numerous changes of keys - stunning!! Just how do these guys read those charts?? Every member a giant.
There will never be a big band to rival the Boss Brass - never.
para todos los que disfrutamos la extraordinaria mùsica de Rob siempre lo extrañaremos porque en la actualidad difìcilmente encontraremos alguna big band como la de Rob, gracias por las memorias.
Gonna miss him, first time I met him in a restaurant just out of nowhere I just randomly mentioned Elwood Glover's Luncheon Date - like nobody knows or remembers that show - well turns out Rob was in the house band, he had great stories and a great spirit. Hope he's up there jammin' with Miles and Coltrane.
This was the cream of the crop; the last generation, the best session players in all of Canada before the erosion of the entire studio scene commenced when midi emerged. And they played arrangements by one of the best -- and busiest "in the old days" -- arrangers on the scene: Rob McConnell.
These guys made some heavy dough back in those days, going from session to session to session. How times have changed. All the great studios in Toronto are gone. Arrangers (such as myself) on computers, and rare occasions for players called in en masse like they used to. It's the way things are now. No turning back of budgets or expectations of clients. I'm just fortunate to bee old enough to be inspired by these guys, hear great music and witness what the scene was like before the heydays died.
One last thing: Rob's band, here, was awesome, charts awesome. But they're strongest attribute was their blend. Absolutely TOP NOTCH. Great bone soli off the top and all masterful to the end.
I rented a VHS of this about 20 years ago and fell instantly in love with it. I've been searching for it ever since. This is my favorite big band, and it has been a logical progression (for me AND the band) from Basie to Thad Jones-Mel Lewis to Rob McConnell.
gracias por los datos trabanul y felicitaciones por tu buen gusto musical ya que (desgraciadamente) pocos conocen a Rob Mc Connell y a su extraordinaria banda.
Wonderful!! Thanks Trabanul for placing clips of Boss Brass on Youtube!! What special memories of attending their concerts. I first saw them at the Savarin on Bay Street in 1969. Thanks again!!

This has long been one of my favourites; what an amazing band ! The solos are so well constructed and tasteful and the sectional blending unbeatable.

alguien me podria confirmar si esta melodia se encuentra en el disco big band jazz.
ardillita4567 3 years ago

Beautiful sound from the flugelhorn! The mellow tone blended perfectly in the bossa.
