your video is problematic -- are you REALLY arguing that Katie has more reason to be happy than her friend, JUST BECAUSE her friend's in a wheelchair?
it doesn't seem like your video actually accomplished the stated goals of your assignment, since you appear to be arguing that people in wheelchairs should be sad all the time.
Oh, I think I know what you mean now. And yeah, I agree, the only reason we had to have a disabled character in the video was because our brief required us to show disbility in a posible light in advertising. Thank you so much for your comment once again though, very appreciated.
If disability weren't constantly used this way in media, it wouldn't be such a problem. This is the main way PWD are shown when they're allowed to be "plucky" or cheerful.
Equating the situation that people with disabilities live with to low-self esteem dismisses and trivilalizes the experience of disability AND equates situations where people do have phobias of crowds or leaving their homes as something that can be "cured" by telling folks to feel better about themselves.
@TurtleWex IMO the video shows that the girl with the disability (the one in the wheelchair) isn't really "disabled" - she's still able to have fun, obviously, to have a good time with friends and everything. While the girl with low self-esteem is not even able to leave her house. So no, I don't think it portrays physical disabilities in a bad way...
I showed disabled people in our uni the video and asked them for their views. Most of them didn't think the advert was meant to target the wheelchair and people focusing on that takes it out of context.
We want to show everyone in the same light, and show that disabled people, as we know from the people we talked to, feel like their disability can be challenging, (NOT THAT THEY ARE UNHAPPY) and together with Dove people can get help with feeling more confident, which is what our advert is about.
this girl is beautiful in a wheelchair

People with disabilities don't exist to be a very special message to the able-bodied.

Unfortunately, you showed disability in a very negative light, not a positive one at all.
Low self-esteem is a terrible thing that makes your life unhappy.
Low self-esteem is a disability.
This leads directly to the takehome message:
Disabilities are terrible things that make your life unhappy.
