Get rid of the teachers and professors. The school system is outdated, obsolete. We can nationalize education. We could pay the best professors in the world to record their lessons on every subject, make those videos accessible through the internet, cable tv, etc. And instead of paying teachers annually to do the same old song and dance, we could just pay the students to learn and pass the tests on these recordings. We need to put the carrots in front of the students, not the teachers!
Teachers should be tested on their material. The union rep poses a false equivalency in asking the politician to take tests on the legislative process. He isn't expected to pass on his knowledge to others and isn't measured on that exercise. Teachers are. Unfortunately, the problem that remains in the curriculum itself, which is hopelessly out of date.
The State GAVE us the money to maintain classroom size reduction; It's the ADMINISTRATORS that are selfish by making cuts that effect the kids ability to learn.
You're an idiot. Where has there EVER been a cut in administration to balance the local budget? We HAVE funding to continue classroom size reduction, but the District chose to fire teachers and use the saving to pay other State cuts. If the State cuts funding for electricity, cut electricity. If they cut funding for maintenance, cut maintenance.
The money HAS BEEN ALLOCATED FOR THE TEACHERS WE HAVE~! So WHY are we firing teachers to move to a 35 to one ratio?

Taught high school years in Japan and now 2 yeas in the states. Frankly, not only are the Japanese superior in the sciences but they are better in English as well. Unions are part of the problem, but not biggest. The real edge Japan has is a homogeneous student base and that relative to the US, the parents in Japan care about education.
In addition, Republicans driving the school into the ground has nothing to do with Jeff Smith, because he's a Democrat, and it has NOTHING to do with the effectiveness of teacher testing.
Just because he said the Republicans drove the school into the ground doesn't mean he explained how. If I had an argument against George W Bush that said "George Bush stopped the Rockies from winning the World Series", the comment would be meaningless because it gives no explanation as to how he did it.
that man around 1:30...his argument has absolutely ZEROOOOO content. He first uses an ad hominem argument, which has nothing to do the issue, then he starts attacking Republicans but he doesn't even define what he's attacking them for...
yeah, if the teacher couldn't pass the test on the subject they are teaching then they wouldn't have graduated college to begin with.

@DieFatorLiveThin They are. Check with your state education department
on teaching credential requirements. You must have a degree in the area,
pass a general and an area exam. He said every 5 years which a radical
departure. No other profession requires that.

If I were a parent, teacher's unions would make my blood boil. Instead, they just make me nauseous.

"You avoided us"
Who is that guy, Sherlock Holmes.
You don't ask the Students BEFORE you give a pop-quiz. You don't ask the Teachers BEFORE you test them.
The point is that they should KNOW the answers at all times, not just when they are afraid of being called on it.

Good guy, and intelligent from the way he laid the smack down on the belligerent questioner. I'd vote for him, regardless of party affiliation.
