  • His rolls sound like a woodpecker on a date. 2:15

  • just get Tommy Igoe hands for a lifetime dvd. Its all you need.

  • Sir: What you speak of is not a necessary part of control and endurance. Flexor/Extensors of the forearm develop with increased reputations daily over YEARS, not with lactic acid which is what produces fatigue. If you choose to do this "BURN". Suggestion, do as many reps as you can until you experience that slight burning, and then give your muscle(s) a break and listen to your body. Burning sensations are a warning, and if you ignore it, you could be risking an injury to muscles or tendons.

  • God! What a fat pussy! I can go faster and longer and I've only been playing for a little over a year! And I can keep time!

  • first time i've seen the valsalva maneuver used for a single stroke roll. You know the two girls one cup video reactions? I'd like to do that with weckl, colaita and steve smith watching this.

  • lol the most workout the dude's got ever

  • I'd like to see Mike Mangini bitch slap this guy with a metronome.

  • I can't believe Evans actually put their logo on this! I'm glad I don't use their products; I'd hate to be associated with this nonsense.

  • Looks like open to closed to open with dynamics to me. Nice 5th grade lesson. Way to inflate your own ego with out really teaching shit. If anyone is wondering how to get chops it is very simple. You start out with remedial or painstaking slow tempos, and increase the tempo gradually. Way past whatever you "think" is unattainable. There are no limits.

  • How is this any different then any other way to practice singles? I guess I was doing my singles practice incorrect

  • you people are idiots. he tells everyone to stretch and warmup therefore the muscles will not be destroyed and lives will be ruined. so everyone stop complaining

and did you even listen?!?!? BODYBUILDERS WILL TEAR MUSCLES TO BUILD MORE, this is the exact same thing this guy is doing. it makes sense and its what youve been doing your whole drumming career, you practice tear muscles, and rebuild them. this just FOCUSES on doing that instead of slowly doing this by practicing a song.

  • @howycwap I AGREE :-)

  • @howycwap No you are generally wrong. Practice over years tones muscle, not tears muscle. Body Builders tears muscle and then their own bodies repairs the torn cells and they replenish proteins and use muscle enhancement formulas, normally. Attempting this same approach in a career in drumming, Carpal Tunnel and Tendonitis may very easily cut a career short...this is a very dangerous technique and never endorsed by one single author such as Chapin, Moore, or N.A.R.D. etc. that I know of.

  • That cant' feel good. If I may suggest...practice with brushes. If I may suggest again...practice on a pillow. Once you have done one, or both...put the sticks back in your hands and work on allowing the sticks to rebound. I worry you will be damaging your wrists. Drumming should never hurt, dude...please be careful!

  • "And try to remember to keep breathing?" wtf, this guy is nuts!

  • Tendinitis on the waaay...

  • "aways has to be nice and relaxed... " and the exercise is called Burn

    what a great teacher

"remember to keep on breathing too" ... brilliant

  • Not liking the look of this at all

  • This exercise is useless and can be potentially dangerous to your arm muscles. Tip to build speed. Sit down and play a single stroke roll at a slightly faster speed that you would actually roll. Then just practice according to the metronome. Once you're getting quite comfortable with the tempo. Increase and repeat the exercise. Not only would this practice technique increase your speed, it would also allow u to play at diff speeds.:)

  • @Drumzmer555

    could not agree more..

  • @Drumzmer555 what you just said is almost identical to what he said only takes alot longer. this man has just worked on this technique so long that he has gotten used to such a fast speed. everyone is getting caught at the speed and are freaking out that to gain muscles you have to go that speed. no obviously you go higher than your capabilities until you fatigue. same principle as proffessional bodybuilding

  • @howycwap okay if thats what you think. Go ahead and try it out. Let me know if it works in a few months

  • @Drumzmer555 i will. oh wait its already been working and ive been doing it for about a week now.

  • @howycwap sure no prob. peace:)

  • Less talking, more action ;)

  • This is weird.

  • his singles are so slow.

  • people are going to hurt themselves doing this

  • Interesting breathing technique: Holding your breath until you gasp?

    I don't think so.

As for playing evenly... That must be on a different vid.

  • this is an awesome video.. i always wondered why my singles sounded like shit and doubted my practicing techniques.. thanks to this video i now kno wt am doing is right..

  • Please take this down, Evans. This really isn't good.

  • any one else thinks he looks like a t-rex at 0:36?

  • Okay don't do what this guy does at all, he had a nice little introduction and i thought he would atually demonstrate something useful but no.

  • WTF this

  • I don't like this

  • Do that execise every day for 30 min.....In one year u will definately suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome

  • Sorry, but drumming should never, EVER be this tense.

  • that man doesn't look like a who know what workng out is

  • Fuckwit

  • you should almost never hold your breath while drumming, no oxygen no muscle movement! At the end of this video he lets out a big sigh of air and that is because he is holding his breath. The burn is from an oxygen dificiency to the muscle. He is still good but if he learned how to breathe properly he would be awesome! Drumcorps videos are where its at as far as rudimental and fundamental hand technique is concerned. peace!

  • Bad advice. Practice singles with a metronome or drum machine and play relaxed and even everyday and you will get faster. It takes many years of playing to achieve even pro sounding singles. Just a lot of hours. ALWAYS PRACTICE RELAXED. HOW YOU PRACTICE IS HOW YOU WILL PLAY. NO SHORTCUTS. I WISH THERE WAS.

  • I have one word: NOT. finger control is the key.

  • fuck off

  • this is fun looool its seems stupid but i will try because its simple than pratice every day half hour more loool so lets try this stupid shit xDDDDDDDDDD

  • @druggged ok lol this suks hard... i aint get tired so fast and it doesnt seems to endurace anything loool

  • I totally flagged this video! It's the worst exercise video I've seen yet!

  • wtf????

  • is this a joke?

  • horrible technique good god. This is bad karma; to teach one must be a master first...

  • Good speech, totally wrong acting= insane or fool

  • dude needs to practice what he preaches....

  • You all are idiots, I've been playing for a decade in all sorts of percussion. Ask any instructor, how you're supposed to increase your speed on anything, they'll say "start slow, then go as fast as you can while maintaining evenness." Y'all need to shut up haha this is some actual good advice. Just because it's slightly out of context and y'all are too stupid to figure out the correct context doesn't mean this is crap.

  • GAY

  • Learn the Moeller. 'Nuff said.

  • Wow that was fucking stupid. You just gave every beginner drummer who watched this the first stage of carpal. Don't tell kids to go faster they will fucking do it and be "burnt" by the time they realize what a fucking stupid exercise it was.

  • I think this is the first video I have disliked on youtube. It's just a bad lesson. Don't make it a habit it clinch up when you play fast. If you are playing any kind of fast or heavy music and clinch up like that you are going to wear yourself out and put on a bad show. JorahDumond was 100% correct when he said speed comes with control. Just keep practicing and pay attention to your form.

  • so basically, you go as fast as you can then run out of effort and stop? GENIUS

  • Fast and strong but what is it?

  • whatever .... the burn .... more like the turd

  • I think I've already commented on this video before, but goddamn this guy is an idiot.

  • "It could be very detrimental to your forearm."

    Then don't do it.

  • that's.. bullshit :D

  • Guys, don't do this.

  • or use a metronome

  • wow, he's a 2-pump chump. lasted all 20 seconds?

  • I think the Jojo Mayer exercise of putting your forearms together and clapping your hands is a good burner and help develop the muscles needed to build endurance. I think he needs to follow his own and advice and breathe, to be out of breath after that just shows how much he was tensing up. I don't see this lesson to be a good route to go.

  • .. it is really what the body builders call the principe of burn out.. ( of a muscle )

You go as far as you can. At one point as you say the muscle will give up.. But that is point, that gets every ( periodical ) practicing a bit further = you move your speed limit everytime somewhere further. ( will of course be an individual thing..) But great, true, when some methods get boring.. really great to make the palette of exercises bigger. THANX FOR POSTING!!!!

  • slow singles

  • been doing this for a while... no damage yet!

  • so basically he's teaching us how to tear our muscles .... and hence this is a good idea on how to build our muscles... lol...right...

this exercise shouldnt be practiced in my opinion..

  • don t try this at home...or anywhere else....Youtube plz.....remove it now!!!!

  • You people are dumbasses. This guy is an expert on rudiments. This excercise is a shortcut to building the muscles in your arms. It's okay for you losers to deliberately disobey the drumming legends by trying to figure out a quick way to gain speed using your fingers, but when someone shows a method that slightly strays from traditional practice, everyone shoots it down. Yeah, Buddy Rich used his fingers, but only to take advantage of rebound like anybody else.

  • @TheDustyspears He didn't use nothing but fingers, or any push pull BS. If you don't believe me, look up Dick Cully. He's a kickass drummer and a close friend and student of Buddy Rich. What I'm trying to say is fuck finger technique - develop your arm muscles properly and stop whining about not being lightning fast. And quit dissing professionals. I use this technique to build my endurance, and I promise, my technique is not perfect, but it's not hidious either.

  • @TheDustyspears "didn't use nothing but fingers" so he used fingers? "fuck finger technique" ?? haha nice one. you are dumb.Very very dumb.

  • @nonodog1 If I'm dumb, you're on the edge of mental retardation. Finger technique is NOT neccesary, and anyone who says it is, is no drummer. You can reach any speed you want with just wrist motion. Most drummers today just don't have the will power to do that, so they work their wrists for a bit, and then shortcut it with their fingers. I don't have a problem with guys who do this, but I will never do it myself. If that makes me dumb, then yeah, I guess I'm stupid.

  • i bet that throne smells pretty bad right now.

  • you freakin kill people with this exercise !!!!

  • It's called APPLIED SCIENCE. Natural, simple physics comes into play with drums and percussion, more than any other instrument. Most people just don't take the time to sit and figure out how to make their muscles, and the drum, work for them correctly. The slower you play, the more you should use your larger muscle groupings, and the faster, vise versa. Arms to wrists to fingers. Same goes for the legs and feet in my opinion...

  • @McQuads87 In your opinion? Is that science? No it's your opinion...nice try.

  • So THAT'S how the blue devils do it....

  • @Marz1ns4n1ty When I marched I watched a blue devils snare player in the lot playing his solo. He looked like he was going to explode!!! To be honest I almost threw up...

  • Comment removed

  • wow. that was just a bad exercise

  • For anybody watching this video. Please do not take any of what this man has said as truth, this is a horrible lesson that will only cause you pain and damage your muscles in the long run.

  • @FunkmasterF18 Your wrong, actually. This exercise doesn't help you get faster, as he stated in this video, but it does in fact help you with your endurance. If you do feel pain and damage in your muscles, you are not doing the exercise correctly.

  • ...Free Drum Lessons... It's obvious. I won't pay for that....

  • Ha, ha, haa! This was delightful. I showed it to my cat and he became world renown on the drums. I showed it to my wife and now she can do single chop back rubs with burning intensity. This should be shown around the world 24.7.365. You will see drummers jamming and snares blazing with smoke coming out of them. Burn, baby burn! Disco inferno! Come on now, everyone do the burn! OUCH! AHH... OOH! AHH... YAHH...WAHH... Patta Fla Fla... Ska... Jazz... Funk...
  • People, just sit down and practice. Do some rudiment work with both your hands and feet, especially flams and paraddidles with the variants of those rudiments. Do it for about a half hour a day with marching sticks or swords or something heavier than the sticks you use. Throw on some boots or leg weights as well for the feet.

This exercise doesn't do anything but teach you how to hit like a monkey, just work on control with your hands and speed will come naturally (with dynamics!).

  • 2:43 minutes of crap

  • Oh... my... fucking... god... >.<'

  • There is some truth in this.... i used a similar technique for pedal speed. He left out some key stuff though. First breathing is important to ensure that the fatigue is due to you muscles being over work not because there is not enough oxygen in your blood stream. do a 23o bp single stroke roll than check you breathing. Is it speratic and shallow in some point and less often and deeper in other. the key is to take slow even breaths no matter what you playing. The bennefits are instant.

  • @emaculate_ forgive the speeling typo's my kid was cryin so i was rushing.

Second-find a speed that is comfortable to you. If you are just starting i recomend 180 bpm. No start playing a a single stroke roll up to speed and continue to due so. just before it starts to burn stop... relaxe. Now start again. Once the burn comes this time try to play through it until the burn has reached its max.... When it feels like the pain has peaked and cant hurt any worse. Now stop and relax

  • @emaculate Now that you have relaxed begin again. This time when the burn comes continue to play as long as you can. eventualy you will fell like stoping this is fine. just keep repeating the process. Relax then go for it again. try to get a little further every time. THE RESULSTS!!!!! ONce you have done this exercise many times in you regement The burn will dissapear. Some times you can actualy fell it happen. Your playing its burning then BOOM the pain fades instantly.

  • @emaculate ONce you can paly the speed with no burn move to 200bpm and so on and so on. i recomend you only do this exercise twice a week.

READ 1st COMMENT ON BOTTOM AND WORK YOUR WAY UP. I HOPE THIS HELPS. IT IS A BRUTAL WORK OUT BUT YOUR A BRUTAL DRUMMER RIGHT?!

  • but...this make no sense....the arthur ewing of the drums....

  • try to remember to keep breathing......

im curious if he forgot one day and passed out or something.

  • hahaha what a fucking idiot

  • he just crapped himself

  • @crazydrummer452 hence the burn (in your ass)

  • just learn Moller Technique you will be able to fly with a lot less effort.

  • Comment removed

  • if it works for him then great, but i dont really agree..also i didnt see any "great" speed that would be a benefit of such a brutal exercise.

  • This is masochism.

    Another Evans sponsored idiot.
