Excellent review. I like your non-emotional comments, and find your accent very easy to understand (English is my second language). Would you care to produce a part-II comparing the 2011' lenses? Cheers from Brazil.
i want to buy a second lens to my 18-55 kit lens ( i have a d3100) and I'm juggling between choices, please help!!! So far I have considered the following lenses: Nikkor 35mm f1.8G, Nikkor 50mm f1.8G ( which hasn't but will soon be released for sale), the Nikon 18-70mm f3.5-4.5G, and Tamron 28-75mm f2.8. HELP please!! I mainly do amateur food photography, but also use it for daily general purposes
I personally see no purpose for an 18-70 because the 15 mm isn't that big a jump from the 55mm that your kit lens will grant you. However, I got a 35mm f/1.8 and that was a great lens. My only regret was not getting the 50mm. The 35mm isn't really wide angle and as such was a bit awkward for framing. If you're doing food photography, the 50mm would be better for you. I don't think you should pick up the 18-70 or 28-75 lenses; you should go for a 70-200 or something; those go for around $180.
@123IOWNALL321 35mm is pretty darn close to what your eye is truly seeing outside the camera and will be able to fit more without distortion great for full body portraits and such, but they dont call the Nifty 50 for nothing its one of the best all purpose lens and the 1,4f is not all bad either ;D
Wellll...not really. If you look through a true 35mm lens on a film camera body, it's a bit wider angle than what your eye really sees, so there is some wide-angle distortion in that sense. All that happens when you mount it on a DX camera is it takes a crop of that. So you get a crop of a wide angle lens, giving you a bit of wide angle distortion, even though it's capturing the area of a 52mm lens. Also I made a mistake in my previous post: I meant 50-200, not 70-200.
Im just getting into photography ... getting a Nikon D3000 next week, what lenses would you reconmend ? Also im looking at getting a Flash Gun and a lens hood, would you say these are all essential ?
Hello Gordon,I love ur reviews,I always look out for anything cameralabs.just bought a D90 with a 18-105mm & also found a 70-200mm (both Nikkor VR lenses) on sale for $170.wanted to know if it's work getting 'em both or something better like a 18-200mm??

quick question is there a big difference between the Nikon 70mm-200mm f2.8 and the Nikon 80mm-200mm f2.8 cause the price difference is a really big gap between the two lenses why is that extra 10mm make such a different is it the build quality or the focusing speed?
I'm using a D3s with 24-70 Nikkor, but i'm always surprised to see how good the 18-55 VR is (No, i don't use it on D3s but on D90). Please guys never under-estimate this very good piece of lens :-)
went to your site didn't see answer for this question: is there such a beast, excellent quality picture and excellent quality video in one camera with minidv?
1. If I am buying a 18-200mm for D300S does it suffice as multipurpose lens. I like taking family photos (indoors and outdoors both), sports and loads of landscapes...
2. If I am buying 18-200 mm does buying 55-200mm make sense ? Will it be ever useful ? I am not buying any other lens,,, not even 18-55mm...

@cjgan80 I'm sorry, I can't answer any more of your questions here. Everything you've asked about is answered in the articles on my website, so please check them out! And if you have any further questions, there's our forum. I've said this many times, but you keep asking here! Sorry!
@cjgan80 DX denotes a lens that is specifically designed for the smaller digital format....... VR means that the lens has a vibration reduction button (reduces blur at slow shutter speeds)
@cjgan80 DX means crop sensor(D40,D60,D3000,D3100...etc and VR means (Vibration Reduction) to help with minor shaking while taking pictures. It helps when you have low shutter speed to give the camera a good backbone...;p
I plan to do a couple more Nikkor lenses in the near future, but do check my reviews at cameralabs . com first because I do more there than I do here!
You can use old lenses on a D60, but you won't be able to use a lot of features, like the 3D Color matrixing and the auto focus ability. The D60 does not have an Auto Focus motor in the body so you will require Auto Focus to be built into the Lens itself. So look for lenses that have AF-S in the name.

It's like vinyl records - some nice qualities, but the convenience of digital (plus its quality nowadays) far outweighs it for most people. But like vinyl, some enthusiasts still swear by it.
and why is that? Real/True photographers never say that one brand is better than the other. They know the strengths and weaknesses of both Nikons and Canons. I have a Nikon and I love it. Most of my friends at my school all carry XSi's. All they is that Canon is the best without giving me a legitimate reason. Usually its either "canon makes a better sound" or "nikon has too many modes". I can probably give about 5 real reasons why I picked Nikon over Canon. The same would go the other way...
Don't have one yet but would always get a nikon... for my taste canon has a little too much electronic post-processing in the cameras...and I alsohave lot of lens kits solely fitting to nikon...
Gordon You have awesome movies ! Im wondering when you will put a review of 18-105 rv ? is it worth to give more cash for it instead 18-55 rv , thank you
Hey, i just purchase the 18-200 for my D200, and what i can see this lens is really what i need.
I really appreciate your tips, because those tips make made the right desicion, and by the way let me know if you have tips for white balance in the nikon d200.
I have both lenses on a D80 and the 18-200 VR is WAY better. the VR is great plus the image quality is great for a long zoom. 18-135 suffers a great deal in low light, very soft w/o the VR unfortunately. But if price is a large factor the 18-135 is still a good, very sharp lens for the price :)
Just wondered if you could help me with my dilemma.
I'm getting a D90 in a couple of months and I'm wondering what to do about lenses. Is it worth getting the kit (£60 more than body only) and selling the 18-105 to get the 18-200? I'm new to DSLRs so I'm not really sure about what sort of photography I'll be in to.
Also, I was wondering if the 50mm f1.4 was worth the extra £150 over the 1.8?
Thanks so much for the help and keep the videos coming!
Good questions and many people have been through the same dilemma! I can't answer here, but feel free to ask the members on the Nikon section of the cameralabs forums...
a suggestion if i may, i guess you record your vids in a non sound proof room or studio and hence the audio has an echo to it. either record in a sound proof room or add subtitles to ur vids. at places i found it difficult to follow ur accent. ....or maybe it's just me.
Im getting the D90. My question is do I get the kit or just the body and the 18-200? Coz if I get the Kit with the 18-105 and upgrade to the 18-200, won't my 18-105 be of no use anymore?
I have never used the 18-135 lens but i own the 50mm 1.8 and it is as sharp as my 28-70 f 2.8 as well as my 70-200 vr.....Two of Nikons sharpest lens.
I have a d60 and am torn between a 55-200 or a 70-300 nikkor. But now I am not even sure if either of these lenses are best for what I need. I use my camera to take long distant, action photos with split second timing. Any advice?
Now there are much new lenses with VR (18-105, 18-55), I want to buy a new lens in stead of my 18-55 VR and 55-200 VR combination, but I haven't the money to buy a 18-200 mm VR lens. A Sigma 18-200 OS lens is nice too, but what is a good choice?
Well, it depends on the filter. I use a Polarizing filter when I am taking a picture of a car or something with water to eliminate some reflections as well as bring out blues and whites. I even have some fun ones that put a "star" on candle light or light sources. Check out google if you want some more info. Hope that helps.
Hi Guys, great review. More than a comment this is a question. I am planning on getting the Nikon D90, but I am not sure what lens/es are the best combination.
My options are the kit lens (18-105mm vr)+70-300mm or the nikon 18-200. What do you think?
Depends whether you're happy carrying and changing lenses, or only want one lens to do it all. Feel free to discuss it further in the Nikon section of the cameralabs forums!
hmmmd40/60 suks....why is that mate? I have a D40 and it does not suck and you know why?because it has a large sensor and a small MP number(6MP= A3 good prints)=>1,7 pixel/cm2.The D 3 has 1.3pixels/cm2.That means good pictures dude!!!!!the eos 450has over 2 and a PS camera has around 20 to 30.
i don't know... i've seen d40/d60 here in helsinki selling as body only. as well as on internet. though, i've decided later with d80 including 18-55 and 55-200 for the beginning and can't complain at all. however, i bought it in germany in august 2008 as it was cheaper than here in finland.
Hey Gordon, I was looking for the 18-200 VR Lens review....it says the video isn't available...could you give me a link to it since I'm seriously considering a nikon d80 with an 18-200...
hi its me again =D i getting d40x with a new lens next month ... but i cant decide the lens i wanted to get for it ... i was wondering is there other lens other than nikon 18-200mm telephoto lens because its too high end for me ... was wondering if i can actually use sigma 18-200mm or the 25-300mm ... because i compare the price i could actually gain by buying sigma lens .... can it fit in d40X forththird lens or do you have any recommendation other than nikkon original 18-200mm?
i wanted to buy D40 but i decide to get the best lens available then get the body after that.... i was wondering whether i should get the 18-135mm or the 18-200mm lens .... both have their + points but as an architect i would like to take landscape and small details.... overall i don't know which is better to capture these .... 18-135mm or 18-200mm ???
They both zoom out to the same wide angle, so it depends how much you want or need to zoom-in. Do check out the full article which goes with this video by clicking the link to the right of the video and if you have any Qs after that, feel free to post on the Nikon section of the cameralabs forum.
Hi, i have a Canon XS. I will be taking photos of baseball and cricket matches from about 100 meters away. I am confused about telephoto lens what range is good. I cant find a good tutorial about dslr lens. thanks.
Hi Chad, I recommend you read the lens buyers guide in the lenses section at cameralabs . com - then feel free to discuss it further in the cameralabs forums...
Great video! your videos are always of great help. I have a question however, I have a D40 with the 18-55, i'm considering trading it in towards the 18-135. I find that this 135 is the perfect focal length and offers me the most flexibility. any thoughts?
Just adding to everyone else, thanks so much for your reviews they are very helpful. I have a D40x, and I only have the kit 18-55 lens, but I want to upgrade, and I'm looking at the 18-70, or 18-135. I take a wide range of shots from landscape to HDR, to Portraits, to Micro. What do you think I should go with keeping in mind the value with price?
I have the 18-135mm. It is impressively sharp considering its big range. However, I'd say the 18-70mm has better build/image quality, and is a bit faster at the telephoto end (4,5 vs. 5,6 on the 135)
So, do you need the extra range? If you can say no to that, go for the 18-70 - but the 135 certainly is an excellent lens, and still miles better than the 18-55mm which I myself upgraded from.
Well, the 18-70 has a better aperture at the long end and better build quality, but the 18-135 is sharper and isn't as bad with purple fringing. So based on that, I'd chose the 18-135mm. Some might disagree, but that's what I'd chose. Good shooting!
Thanks for your reviews! Question, a couple of days ago I bought my first Nikon D300; hasn't arrived yet! I've been looking into lenses, specifically Nikkor. I dont know much about lenses, but I have been thinking on getting two lenses, a 18-55mm and a 55-200mm. Could this be pretty much what I need as an amateur? Please advice!
Hi Gymwrecker, the D300 is a semi-pro body, so to make the most of it, buy decent lenses. The 18-55mm and 55-200mm are budget lenses, so I'd go for either the 18-70mm plus 70-300mm or the 18-200mm. Feel free to discuss this in more detail on the Cameralabs forum if you like...
Again, Thanks for your prompt reply! I'm visiting your forums and will register in a few minutes. In regards to your reply, if I go for the 18-200mm, I guess one lens will basically cover my needs (remember, I'm just an amateur).
This is probably a stupid question. I have the 18-135, it came with my D80 and I enjoy taking pictures with it. I'm still an amateur seeing as this is my FIRST SLR digital camera but after this review I'm thinking that once I get to the level where I am comfortable with my camera that I might switch to the 18-200 lens. I've never tried but i was wondering what would happen if I took a picture w/o a lens, would it be the same as taking a picture w/ a normal point and shoot digital camera or not?
No, you need a lens on a DSLR to focus the image. Without a lens you'd just get a blank rectangle instead of an image. Depending on the model, your DSLR might not even let you take photos without a lens attached.
thank you for answering so quickly. I read your review on the D80 compared to a Cannon and I think the third camera was a sony? well this review really solidified my decision of picking the D80 which I was already leaning toward. Do you have a video where you give a tutorial on using an SLR Camera?
The 18-70 has a much better build and its easy to feel that and the optical quality is superior, but no one mentions the horrible distortion it seems to have at 18mm, its not even symetrical!
Hello Gordon and thank you for the nice reviews! I am planning on buying a D80, and was thinking of the kit with 18-70mm. But now I see there is a new lens on the market witch caught my attention, the 16-85mm VR. Are Cameralabs gonna review that in the near future?
The D60 is a great choice for a first-time DSLR buyer - as is the D40. Check our D60 review at the Cameralabs website to compare them - the verdict page should be useful.
Hi everyone, if you're trying to work out what lens is best for you, check out our lens buyers guide at the dslrtips . com website. It explains all the details and shows what you can do with different types...
Any Nikkor lens will focus on the D40 or D40x if it has the letters AF-S in the name. Same for Sigma, but you're looking for the letters HSM in the name. If you're after a budget telephoto zoom, look ay the Nikkor AF-S 55-200mm VR.
hi love your videos, i was wondering if its worth getting a dedicated wide angle lens or stick with my 18-70mm kit lens for some landscape shots?

I personally see no purpose for an 18-70 because the 15 mm isn't that big a jump from the 55mm that your kit lens will grant you. However, I got a 35mm f/1.8 and that was a great lens. Hey Gordan,
I know this is kind of off topic,
but what are your thoughts as of now about Film photography?
CrazyJimKU 2 years ago
It's like vinyl records - some nice qualities, but the convenience of digital (plus its quality nowadays) far outweighs it for most people. But like vinyl, some enthusiasts still swear by it.

does the af lenses work with a camera like the d40?
ThesStig123 2 years ago
They will work, but you'll need an AF-S model for the D40, D40x, D60, D3000 or D5000 to autofocus. Otherwise it becomes manual focus only.
cameralabs 2 years ago
The only differences I'm not sure about are the differences of quality in all 4 lenses? So, what are the differences in picture quality?

CANON IS THE BEST
handsomelok 2 years ago
and why is that? Real/True photographers never say that one brand is better than the other. They know the strengths and weaknesses of both Nikons and Canons. I have a Nikon and I love it. Most of my friends at my school all carry XSi's. All they is that Canon is the best without giving me a legitimate reason. Usually its either "canon makes a better sound" or "nikon has too many modes". I can probably give about 5 real reasons why I picked Nikon over Canon. The same would go the other way...

Hey, i just purchase the 18-200 for my D200, and what i can see this lens is really what i need.
I really appreciate your tips, because those tips make made the right desicion, and by the way let me know if you have tips for white balance in the nikon d200.
Thanks Again
cancuncito01 2 years ago
Lol watching the 18-200 go down on it's own is so hilarious :)) also 18-200 is so expensive. I'll get 18-135mm instead..
gluttonus 2 years ago
I have both lenses on a D80 and the 18-200 VR is WAY better. the VR is great plus the image quality is great for a long zoom. 18-135 suffers a great deal in low light, very soft w/o the VR unfortunately. But if price is a large factor the 18-135 is still a good, very sharp lens for the price :)

Great videos,
Just wondered if you could help me with my dilemma.
Thanks so much for the help and keep the videos coming!
musicaltourettes 2 years ago
Good questions and many people have been through the same dilemma! I can't answer here, but feel free to ask the members on the Nikon section of the cameralabs forums...
cameralabs 2 years ago
remember; jack of all trades, masters of none.
im an amateur myself, but as i understand, investing in good lenses is far more important than the choice of camera.
the 50mm 1.4 is worth every penny and have exellent bokeh, but you should be careful with slower apertures.
check out lilkiwiguy87`s channel, he/they have some good vids on this subject.
(if youre reading ken rockwells page, you should read his about me page so you can understand why you have to take him with a grain of salt)

a suggestion if i may, i guess you record your vids in a non sound proof room or studio and hence the audio has an echo to it. either record in a sound proof room or add subtitles to ur vids. at places i found it difficult to follow ur accent. ....or maybe it's just me.

Hello,
Im getting the D90. My question is do I get the kit or just the body and the 18-200? Coz if I get the Kit with the 18-105 and upgrade to the 18-200, won't my 18-105 be of no use anymore?
Thanks!

probly of course you could get a cheaper and sharper 50mm 1.8d (it is only 50mm not 18-50mm it cant zoom ) its 129.00 on amazon...

I disagree, 18-105 make superb pictures...way sharper than 50mm 1,8

I have never used the 18-135 lens but i own the 50mm 1.8 and it is as sharp as my 28-70 f 2.8 as well as my 70-200 vr.....Two of Nikons sharpest lens.
hamal420 2 years ago
Why is the 18-70 better than the 18-135?
galileo021728 2 years ago
There's several reasons - I've discussed them in detail in my Nikkor lens group test at cameralabs . com...
cameralabs 2 years ago
Do all lenses change aperture as you zoom in or out? my 18-105 nikon does , forgive my ignorance , is this normal.?
acapmex1 2 years ago
Some do, some don't. Generally those with a fixed aperture throughout their range are pricier pro models.
cameralabs 2 years ago
I have a d60 and am torn between a 55-200 or a 70-300 nikkor. But now I am not even sure if either of these lenses are best for what I need. I use my camera to take long distant, action photos with split second timing. Any advice?
missi182 3 years ago
I've reviewed and compared both of them at cameralabs . com - head on over and take a look, especially at the results and verdict pages...
cameralabs 3 years ago
Nice review.
BHN849 3 years ago
I have a Nikon D60, my English isn't good because i'm from Holland.
BHN849 3 years ago
get none of them, all those lenses are slow as molasses. If you want quality especially in low light, save up for f2.8 lenses
newwworlddorder 3 years ago
what are filters used for?
DaNlEe1985 3 years ago
Well, it depends on the filter. I use a Polarizing filter when I am taking a picture of a car or something with water to eliminate some reflections as well as bring out blues and whites. I even have some fun ones that put a "star" on candle light or light sources. Check out google if you want some more info. Hope that helps.

Hi Guys, great review. More than a comment this is a question. I am planning on getting the Nikon D90, but I am not sure what lens/es are the best combination.
My options are the kit lens (18-105mm vr)+70-300mm or the nikon 18-200. What do you think?
avlisodraude 3 years ago
Depends whether you're happy carrying and changing lenses, or only want one lens to do it all. Feel free to discuss it further in the Nikon section of the cameralabs forums!
cameralabs 3 years ago
Thanks for you quick answer.
More than the weight to carry on my main concern is about image quality. Which lens(combination) could get me the better images?
Thanks in advance
avlisodraude 3 years ago
Hi, there's owners of both combos on the cameralabs forums - I'd ask there...
cameralabs 3 years ago
get a 16-85mm vr, quality of the 18-200 without the bulk and zoom creep. much less distortion as well
newwworlddorder 3 years ago
Nikon makes you buy the kit lens, when buying their lower end SLR's like the d40/d60- which sucks, they don't give you a body only option.
NathanGrammatico 3 years ago
thats funny beceause i have actually seen a d60 body only in a store in eindhoven
steeliebob 3 years ago
hmmmd40/60 suks....why is that mate? I have a D40 and it does not suck and you know why?because it has a large sensor and a small MP number(6MP= A3 good prints)=>1,7 pixel/cm2.The D 3 has 1.3pixels/cm2.That means good pictures dude!!!!!the eos 450has over 2 and a PS camera has around 20 to 30.
nocturnus1985 3 years ago
i don't know... i've seen d40/d60 here in helsinki selling as body only. as well as on internet. though, i've decided later with d80 including 18-55 and 55-200 for the beginning and can't complain at all. however, i bought it in germany in august 2008 as it was cheaper than here in finland.

hi its me again =D i getting d40x with a new lens next month ... but i cant decide the lens i wanted to get for it ... i was wondering is there other lens other than nikon 18-200mm telephoto lens because its too high end for me ... was wondering if i can actually use sigma 18-200mm or the 25-300mm ... because i compare the price i could actually gain by buying sigma lens .... can it fit in d40X forththird lens or do you have any recommendation other than nikkon original 18-200mm?
keyzin 3 years ago
i wanted to buy D40 but i decide to get the best lens available then get the body after that.... i was wondering whether i should get the 18-135mm or the 18-200mm lens .... both have their + points but as an architect i would like to take landscape and small details.... overall i don't know which is better to capture these .... 18-135mm or 18-200mm ???
keyzin 3 years ago
They both zoom out to the same wide angle, so it depends how much you want or need to zoom-in. Do check out the full article which goes with this video by clicking the link to the right of the video and if you have any Qs after that, feel free to post on the Nikon section of the cameralabs forum.

My 18-200 doesn't creep. (Is it because it is rather new?)
VisualTalkNet 3 years ago
I believe newer versions of this lens don't suffer as much from creep - but newer lenses are always a bit stiffer anyway.
cameralabs 3 years ago
Great video! your videos are always of great help. I have a question however, I have a D40 with the 18-55, i'm considering trading it in towards the 18-135. I find that this 135 is the perfect focal length and offers me the most flexibility. any thoughts?
conthemon 3 years ago
Does the nikkor 17-55 f/2.8 lens really got a better image quality than the 18-70??
niburu2012 3 years ago
Just adding to everyone else, thanks so much for your reviews they are very helpful. I have a D40x, and I only have the kit 18-55 lens, but I want to upgrade, and I'm looking at the 18-70, or 18-135. I take a wide range of shots from landscape to HDR, to Portraits, to Micro. What do you think I should go with keeping in mind the value with price?
CHunter415 3 years ago
It depends if you want to replace it or complement it... feel free to post your question on the Cameralabs forums to discuss it further...
cameralabs 3 years ago
I have the 18-135mm. It is impressively sharp considering its big range. However, I'd say the 18-70mm has better build/image quality, and is a bit faster at the telephoto end (4,5 vs. 5,6 on the 135)
So, do you need the extra range? If you can say no to that, go for the 18-70 - but the 135 certainly is an excellent lens, and still miles better than the 18-55mm which I myself upgraded from.
hendriksholm 3 years ago
but what lens would you choose out of the 2
uscgswimmers 3 years ago
Well, the 18-70 has a better aperture at the long end and better build quality, but the 18-135 is sharper and isn't as bad with purple fringing. So based on that, I'd chose the 18-135mm. Some might disagree, but that's what I'd chose. Good shooting!
hendriksholm 3 years ago
that's what i like so i'm going for the 18-135 thanks for replying

Thanks for your reviews! Question, a couple of days ago I bought my first Nikon D300; hasn't arrived yet! I've been looking into lenses, specifically Nikkor. I dont know much about lenses, but I have been thinking on getting two lenses, a 18-55mm and a 55-200mm. Could this be pretty much what I need as an amateur? Please advice!
GymWrecker 3 years ago
Hi Gymwrecker, the D300 is a semi-pro body, so to make the most of it, buy decent lenses. The 18-55mm and 55-200mm are budget lenses, so I'd go for either the 18-70mm plus 70-300mm or the 18-200mm. Feel free to discuss this in more detail on the Cameralabs forum if you like...
cameralabs 3 years ago
Again, Thanks for your prompt reply! I'm visiting your forums and will register in a few minutes. In regards to your reply, if I go for the 18-200mm, I guess one lens will basically cover my needs (remember, I'm just an amateur).
GymWrecker 3 years ago
This is probably a stupid question. I have the 18-135, it came with my D80 and I enjoy taking pictures with it. I'm still an amateur seeing as this is my FIRST SLR digital camera but after this review I'm thinking that once I get to the level where I am comfortable with my camera that I might switch to the 18-200 lens. I've never tried but i was wondering what would happen if I took a picture w/o a lens, would it be the same as taking a picture w/ a normal point and shoot digital camera or not?
oyioyioi 3 years ago
No, you need a lens on a DSLR to focus the image. Without a lens you'd just get a blank rectangle instead of an image. Depending on the model, your DSLR might not even let you take photos without a lens attached.
cameralabs 3 years ago
thank you for answering so quickly. I read your review on the D80 compared to a Cannon and I think the third camera was a sony? well this review really solidified my decision of picking the D80 which I was already leaning toward. Do you have a video where you give a tutorial on using an SLR Camera?
oyioyioi 3 years ago
I sure do! Check out our sister site dslrtips . com!
cameralabs 3 years ago
Nikon cameras won't take a picture w/o a lens.. It'll just say "F --" in the secondary status LCD and not do anything else.
hendriksholm 3 years ago
I've owned both the 18-55 and 18-70.
The 18-70 has a much better build and its easy to feel that and the optical quality is superior, but no one mentions the horrible distortion it seems to have at 18mm, its not even symetrical!

Any Nikkor lens will focus on the D40 or D40x if it has the letters AF-S in the name. Same for Sigma, but you're looking for the letters HSM in the name. If you're after a budget telephoto zoom, look ay the Nikkor AF-S 55-200mm VR.
