Without the Beach Boys, music today would be completely diferent. How many bands in the past 20 years have been affected by bands from the sixties? No matter what his critics say, Brian is still a master of the rock genre. I will remember him as such.
Boy, did the Wondermints luck out when they glommed onto and mooched off BW's name. Better hope Malinda Wilson doesn't decide to tell him to stay away from BW or they'll be playing weddings and bar mitzvahs.
Brian actually sounds pretty good right here. The worst he's ever sounded was on the album 15 Big One's. He also sounded pretty bad on Love You (but regardless, I love that album) :) but surprisingly on M.I.U, his vocals sound about as good as ever. Check out the songs "Woncha Come Out Tonight" "She's Got Rhythm" and "Match Point of Our Love"
Brian now has the BEST BAND EVER. Just like what he said to the Wondermints, he wished, he could have had them way back then. They were too young at that time. LOL
I was lucky enough to be a kid in Ireland in the 60's when the Beach Boys were in their prime. My life was filled with Brian Wilson's beautiful music - heactually composed it and all the beautiful harmonies and then performed it with Beach Boys. We are privileged to still have this GENIUS amongst us. To be able to actually see him performing at this stage of his life after all he's been through is just mind blowing. Brian Wilson touches something deep in my very soul. I love the guy.
I loved this. A little rough around the edges to be sure, but completely live and unretouched and a very soulful delivery from Brian. For those preferring a more polished sound, Brian's vocal track from this performance could be made to sound much more "finished" with the good mix that would add some effects and pitch correction it would have received if this recording were to be prepared for an official release. You can tell by the reaction of those present that it came across very well live
@miamidan51 Calling this a "very soulful" vocal by Brian is total Brianista behavior. I hear nothing particularly soulful about this. BW is just doing a straight run-through vocally, you're just mistaking being off-key and sounding like a drunk at a karaoke bar for soulful. Wilsonistas make way too many excuses for BW. Yeah, we know it's awesome that he even sings anymore, but crap is crap. If you want soulful, watch Carl's performance of this at Knebworth in 1980.
@peterp21 Brianista? lol. You have no idea how far off base you are with that comment. Reading some of your other comments, though, it's clear you have no idea about a lot of things. Nitwit.
Probyn, cheers for the info about Clem, I had been wondering who was on drums. I've seen you guys many, many times in the UK since Pet Sounds tour 2002. Always a dream! Can't wait to see you all back for the BW Reimagines Gershwin tour, September 2011 in Glasgow. Cheers.
relimes: He did have a stroke at one time you heartless imbecile. Go search out another fly and pull the wings off that one, too. People like you turn my stomach. Brian Wilson is still the most gifted songwriter alive today and will be always remembered as the Mozart of Rock. What timeless song or songs do you have under your belt? Well? What? Aha! Just what I thought! Nil, nada and zip.
@pmoyer50 Spoken like a true obsessive Wilson cultist. BTW, the party line from Malandy Wilson and BW's handlers is that BW didn't have a stroke (they're lying). BW's stroke is his own fault, for the massive amounts of blow he snorted along with the heroin, freebase and God Only Knows what else. And while BW is one of the greats, let's be honest, he hasn't written a true classic since 1968, 43 years ago. I don't count merely good songs as classic, either.
@peterp21: I'm certain that you didn't write any classic songs. I seriously doubt that you wrote any good songs, either. You are however a classic piece of shit.
Just hearing and seeing Brian performing after all life has thrown at him is just amazing. Icing on the cake! It is wonderful to hear him still put his heart into his songs! I thought it sounded great. He has a little trouble with the high notes these days...but at his age, I would be lucky to sound decent at all! Thanks, Brian , for all you give us!
@MarcoZucchi81 Because Mike Love is a prick - he tried unsuccessfully to sue him for the rights to Brian's music, cut him to pieces behind his back and danced on his delicate pyche while he suffered... Brian made a great move NOT to do anything with the old band. After all, Carl and Dennis, his brothers and closest allies in the group were both dead.
No, it's not a 'freak' show...I saw his SMILE tour a yr or 2 later and he was in much better voice--he's better than this. Not only was his dad physically abusive, but emotionally abusive...humiliating him...at one point even convinced him his songs were anachronisms...got Brian to sell his whole catalogue of tunes at a fire sale price to a company that made millions--just to screw him over.
@relimes - Brian's dad was a monster. He hit Brian a lot, threw him against walls, and Brian lost some of his hearing. So, his brain and emotional state was affected. But not affected enough to keep him from being a FREAKIN' GENIUS songwriter, producer. I personally think he's really brave. I would be very self-conscious with the slurring speech, but he's OUT THERE, and good on him!!!
The Rolling Stone list is a industry standard. What's the big whoop, Brian was slurring words 40 years ago, that's how he sings, he's deaf in one ear. He's got 10x more talent in that slurred voice than anybody in the room.
A lot of people are missing the point on here this was 1995. And Brian hadnt really sang live for years. And his confidence was low when it came to performance So despite his problems you have to allow for that. With all the performing he has since done his voice is much improved now. And of course his better lifestyle has helped. Of course his voice still isnt as good as when he was 23 but a hell of a lot better than it is on here. His shows are great i have seen him 3 times.
@johnmusk - agree with you. I've read "Catch a Wave", his bio. His Dad beat the crap out of him, affected his hearing and other stuff. BUT he perseveres. He was GREAT on Little Steven's Underground Garage radio show co-hosting a few years back.
I don't even see the Wondermints in this video. I find it interesting that he basically "dogged" Jellyfish(catch the interview Wish It Would Rain w/ Roger Joseph Manning Jr. for details) for the Wondermints. Just a lil' ironic. I like the Wondermints but Jellyfish were better in the vocals dept. We're talkin' about the Beach Boys here where vocals were their forte'.
I don't understand why you would call this "humiliation" or a "freak show." It's NOT THAT BAD!! Guess what?? He WANTS to be performing his music. No one is "rolling him out," as if he has no choice in the matter. No on is forcing him to do ANYTHING! You people who think this way need to get over this misconception that Brian Wilson is being brow-beaten into performing to satisfy so-called "leeches" in his life. He is his own man. He does what he pleases. He has said so himself. Period.
I agree that Wilson wants to perform his music, he's not a "freak show," and he is happy to perform. I think what the other poster is referring to is that Wilson, in this cut, is obviously off-key and slurring his words.
@bwsmyhero I completely agree with you.. I think its great! A real treat!.. he was nice enough to ok the release of this as well.. the man has more heart than anyone on here... but you know kids today, they dont know nuthin'. ...lol.. what d'ya expect?
@bwsmyhero I know your comment is 2 yrs old, but got to respond here. BW doesn't know WHAT he wants, and he IS being pushed out onto stage. Stop believing the David Leaf/Malinda Wilson party line. BW blew his mind severely and permanently a long time ago. And productive or not, he has always needed some authority figure to order him around and control him, whether Murry or Gene Landy. From what I hear, BW don't know what galaxy he's living in anymore.
I saw Brian twice this year in NYC and his performances were nothing short of JOYFUL. If you leavge one of his shows without a smile on your face you are either deaf or a grinch.
Before you judge too harshly, please remember that these are rehearsals & were never meant to be heard by the public. It's not fair to judge these things in the same way as a commercial release. Like any musician, Brian would probably be mortified if he knew how many of us are seeing & hearing these rehearsals & demos. When people claim that Brian's voice has left, I wonder if they realize singers don't put their heart & soul into rehearsals as they do live. It's important to keep that in mind.
Wow.. What an awesome clip.. thanks so much for posting this.. I can't believe Brian even attempted this tune.. it was always Carl's (who Brian always admitted to be the strongest singer of the three brothers).. very brave of him to try and he does OK IMHO!!
Thank you, supeswine. I endorse your insightful comments 100%. You really know your stuff when it comes to the Master, BW.
P.S. My personal favourate lyrics come from the Pet Sounds album - in songs like "Wouldn't It Be Nice" and "God Only Knows" , and half a dozen more on that masterpiece.
I don't think a lot of you commentators realise that Brian's demons had not entirely been controlled yet, back then. He was still working HARD at recovering from the 'hell years' of the 70's & 80's. So have some "Love & Mercy" for the guy. This was nothing more than embryonic informal workouts with the Wondermints. ! 13 years later, see them in all action together on stage, by comparison. So you agree, it's not good, that's all I'm saying. I think Brian was incredible and is remarkaly well considering his problems but his voice has suffered just as much as his mind, his mental health has improved, his voice has deteriorated.
You also have to take into consideration that in this clip, Brian is 53 years old, Had been off the road for some time, and is singing all alone without backup vocals. He would have sounded much better if the other Beach Boys had been there to back him. A very gutsy move for Brian at this point!
No it dont sound as good as the original with carl singing but nevertheless its just cool to see him performing again after all the personal shit he's been through.
Smile , your uncle is now a superstar ! You have Brian to thank for that . I am looking forward to seeing them live when they hit Salt Lake City or Boise this year .
These 1995 BW/Wondermints recordings are making the rounds in collector's circles, but I had no idea this was filmed! Yes, unfortunately, Brian had a pretty bad voice that day. "Darlin'" was one of the better performances. Once again, thank you Evasuperstar for a super rare, historic clip!

Wow. I did a search for my uncles (Nick Walusko) band the Wondermints and I actually found something. Cool. I remember when he did this.
