Just wanted to say, this series of videos has been really helpful so THANKS! I've put together a kit based on the equipment and process you use and will brew a batch this weekend!
I was real pleased with mash temps maybe ill add more grain. I saw twenty percent more then i also saw a formula that came out to roughly a lb more of grain. I think the crush looks ok. I'm gonna brew a bitter American recipe next with increased grains. Thanks
@advogold Anytime! Thanks for sharing. Feel free to post a video response with the American bitter. It'd be fun to see how things turn out for you. Happy brewing!
Nice brewed my second batch today. However my OG has been low. Should I increase grains or get finer crush at brew supply. Maybe i need to make my own mill.
@advogold If your temperatures seem to be holding fine in the mash tun (common cause for low OG), then you could either experiment with a finer crush or just use a bit more grain. I added a bit more grain on a recipe I was having trouble with and that helped out the OG quite a lot. Good luck and thanks for posting! If you end up making a mill that'd be fun to see!
I'm about to brew my first batch all grain next Sat. Do I need a mash tun or will the kit I got be fine? Should I worry about chiller right now or how'd you make yours?
@advogold If it's a full all-grain recipe yes, but if the kit came with extract as well as grains, then you'd only need the brew kettle. For all-grain you'll definitely need something that can maintain temperature well for a good 45+ minutes. As far as the chiller goes, I have a video showing how I made it, just check my channel. You don't necessarily need a chiller, but it is pretty difficult to cool it down to room temp quick enough in an ice bath.
@advogold (continued) Just make sure you fill the sink with ice and water. The water helps to transfer the heat into the ice bath much more efficiently than just the ice. Good luck and thanks for watching!
@tlgrimmy Went out and bought the exact same cooler. You mentioned a video of you putting it together. I have most of the parts ready to go, but want to see how you installed a false bottom. Do they even make them that small?
@paleowarrior2 I just used a small section of copper pipe with caps on the end and a T in the middle. I used a dremel cutoff wheel to make a ton of slits in the bottom (you could drills holes if you'd rather). I ended up using a small piece of vinyl tubing to connect the threaded end of the ball valve to the copper T. I did that so that the false bottom would bend under the weight of the grain to the base of the cooler. I think I show the inside of the cooler in my video about brewing equipment.
Volume measurement (as in the bushell) is the traditional way of brewing. You should get to know some rough and ready measures for when your battery dies in your modern "scales". Dark malts usually help the extraction efficiency of the mash. Crystal should help in the mash if you have a high flour to medium grit ratio.
The purpose of wet milling is to keep the husks intact and reduce tannin levels. With such a small quantity just dump all the grist in the mashing liquor and stir for porrage.
@1000AVE0001 Now I tend to use 1/4 of everything in the recipe instead of 1/5 as I did before. That way I end up with a little more wort, can salvage more from the boil, and I can put a little more in the fermenter to account for some of the blow off.

Is the cooler a 2 gallon cooler? and are the parts to convert it to a mashtun the same as a 5 gallon cooler?
paleowarrior2 4 months ago
@paleowarrior2 Yep, you can use the same parts and this is a 2 gallon if memory serves.

How do you scale your recipes for 1 gallon brewing?
