  • Was present at this great master's show-The inimitable Elliott Randall-a ripping, amazingly accurate soloist and impressario with few equals in the world of music. His creativity, and boundless love for music is only a few of the many attributes that make him one of the finest people I have ever had the privilege of knowing. He is just too nice for words....

  • I bought my first LP at 12 in 1969...I was into Hendrix...I bought Steely Dan's "Can't Buy I Thrill" and of course loved "Reelin in the Years"...Saw where Elliot Randall played the lead..I bought the "Randall's Island" LP and I was hooked....Thanks for posting...New to youtube and making the rounds...Cajun MoFo Mojitos and some Ellitot Randall..Pure Greatness!!!

  • This guy is the king of the mixolidian!

  • Chop Shop to the max! You are sick, man!

  • Chop Shop to the max! You are sick, man!

  • Chop Shop to the max!

  • @ defmedia. With respect, musicians are not competitors like gladiators or footballers. Elliott's contribs to Steely's opus were just as critical if not moreso than Jeff's - different styles is all. The two guys haappen to be good buds as well. Thanks for the cool vid! -Bruce:)

  • Sour Flower.. great song off Randall's Island. I have a signed CD of it, thanks Elliott!!

  • The first song in this gig is one from his "island"-LP, which i got back in the old days, lost somewhere and did not find it again. Lost vinyl is always sad, but from this man - oh what a tragedy....

  • this guy has more chops than my butcher squared.

  • Check out this note on Wikipedia: "Legendary Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page has said that Randall's solo on "Reelin' in the Years" is his favorite guitar solo of all-time..."

  • I first heard this song, Sour Flower, back in, I believe 1970, and was blown away at where it went musically from where it started to how it ended. Not many rock guitarists were mixing elements of rock and jazz like this. I've loved this song from day 1.

  • Yo no se como llego ese lp a mi casa pero estrene un equipo de sonido cuando tenia 11 años claro en vinil jeje Elliot Randall estas en mi corazon !!! te recuerdo ....Thanks for post this video ..Thanks God

  • It positively doesn't get better than that! Elliot Randall is the best freestyle jazz-rock improvisational guitarist who ever lived! Thank God for him! lol!

  • Please...How much fun is that?? Really. One of those things you can watch or just listen to, and never get tired or bored of, like Alberts Shuffle by Mike Bloomfield from early 60's. I still listen to that almost daily. Big dif between guitar player and a virtuoso....

  • @joginmt Sorry for nit-picking: Albert's Shuffle, 1968.

  • This is just fantastic -thanks a lot for posting -you did a great job !-gus

  • Elliot is still the best guitarist I've ever heard...The Studio Version Of "Sourflower" Blew Me Away From Day One...a must here!

  • Exelent i remember how my brother likes this record in vinil .... mm im 40 now love it

  • NICE.

  • smoked me to my toes.... sweet a~~

  • Jesus I bought this on vinyl when it was released and saw Elliott in concert with Mick Abrahams......AWESOME !!!

  • Still have it? Wanna sell it??

  • The song is called "Sourflower" It is on the l.p. Randall's Island c. '70 or'71. The liner notes on the album read like a promo for a hot studio gun. Steeley Dan's "Can't buy a thrill" was fresh on the record racks at that time.

  • my kinda guitar, awesome chops! Is this just a jam,or an actually song from one of his recordings.Any info would be appreciated,I'd like to pick up a few of his cd's and catch up,only familiar with his playing from his awesome guitar with the dan.....

  • Boy . . . pretty hazy, but this tune might be from the LP "Randall's Island". So many years back and long gone from my collection, but wore that particular album out many times over.

  • I'll have to check it out...Thanks much.....

  • look for elliot on myspace ... he offers many of his hand-picked songs from his archive ... and he conducts the most informational/entertaining conversation about music (including the industry) you'll find online. —dave

  • @dhogerty "...the most informative ... about the music induustry ..." That's a polite way to put it. On MS, that was one thing, but on FB, it's quite another!

  • Madmaxx, fuck you, Cliff is a goddamn brilliant bass player, one of the most influential in rock, one of the smoothest styles as well, so until you have half as much style or talent as Cliff does, shut your goddamn mouth, asswipe.

  • fuck you Cliff is verry good but the AC-DC bass is simple so Cliff do like this but a agry a never look Cliff bass solo

  • cliff williams is the most lamest bass player alive!!!

he really sucks. all he is the "8th NOTE KING" very boring

  • CLIFF WILLIAMS FROM AC-DC IS THERE

  • So damn good it hurts. Time for a gig in London please, Elliott.

  • E,

You had me from 1,2,3,4! I grinned so much my cheeks hurt. You truly smoke like a Rambler American! By the way, where did you go to "spring training"? I'll bet you didn't get that from Roy Smeck! I used to do something similar on my old strat. As a matter of fact, I'm gonna pull it out and look at it right now. Then I might go look at my guitar some too.

    Dr Jazz

  • It was Elliot Randall. Take that to the bank.

    Jimi

  • it was elliott randall 2 t"s

  • That was great! I saw Elliott in 1968 playin' guitar for Eric Mercury. A few years later he's blowin' me away playin' on Steely Dan records.

  • I know for a fact that it was Elliott on "Reelin'". Skunk did many Steely Dan solos and is a very fine musician, but Elliott has this one. Denny Dias did many solos as well. elliott played on most of the records either as a soloist or rhythm guitarist. He even has a really cool NEW version of "Reelin' In The Years" on his new CD. Check out his website: www.elliott-randall.com for more info.

  • @defmedia You are right....it is Randall. Skunk Baxter's definitely no hack....he too is awesome, but Reelin' does in fact belong to Elliott Randall. I have read that that harmony parst to the solo were done by Baxter, but whether or not that's correct, I do not know.

  • @defmedia Indeed, you are correct, my Friend —Skunk and Denny were the original stalwart main stays, guitar-wise —and, Elliott is most certainly a well-entrenched member of that exclusive fraternity of Dan session guitarists —When "Can't Buy a Thrill" first came out and we all heard "Reelin' in the Years", everybody was checking the liner notes to see just who that was —Saw that group on the "Pretzel Logic" tour; their last for many years and got to hang with them back stage...

  • So who does the lead to Reelin in the years? I always thought he does. Baxter claims it was him. So what is the truth?

  • @hamwinkie Google: "Reelin' in the years, telecaster forum", for Elliott's explanation of his Reelin' solo: The tune was finished except for the solo. The 2-part harmony lines had already been done by Skunk. Elliot came in only to do the solo, & all the solo fills in the tune, which he nailed in one continuous take. I can't find any Skunk quotes that dispute this.

  • @lazur1 You are correct. I thought for years and years that Skunk did that incredible solo, a solo that I would bet no one can listen to without "air guitaring" it, but found out a few years ago that it was in fact Randall.

  • @matt Everyone plays their best on SD sessions. Carlton's most famous solo, in a career of consistently fantastic work: Still '76's "Kid Charlemagne". Rick Derringer played w/sophistication beyond his typical style. Name a Denny Dias solo without SD. Imagine being invited to play a -ton- of solo stuff on a SD tune, knowing it needs to stand up to some -incredible- 'backing' lines! (I wonder if a lot of other guys tried & failed, the way they did on 'Peg', maybe even Skunk himself !)

  • @lazur1 As good as I think I am I would be overwhelmed to play with a high caliber group like Steely Dan. In fact I think I would feel more at ease playing bass for Paul McCartney.......being a former Beatle Tribute palyer, at least I would know the songs. But SD is impeccable, precision musicianship and I bet nearly all the session players read charts.

  • @lazur1 Thanks for that link/direction to The Telecaster Forum. Very cool indeed. I myself, though a bass player of 30 years, have always preferred Tele's over Strats, in fact my main bass is a 1990 G&L ASAT bass, a bass with a Telecaster slab body. I just love the look of Tele's so much more.
