Taped this song when it first came on the radio in 67. The tape wore out a long time ago, so I was happy to find it again here. At the time I didn't know it was a Randy Newman song. I like this version the best.
I think all X Factor contestants and aspirants should watch this man, realise that he has what they do not have - talent - and then they should do the right thing and just go and fuck off and die.
This is the first music /sound i can recall from the age of 3 and has stayed in my memory ever since. My parents must have turned up the old radiogram when it came on.Funny how we remember certain sounds and smells along the path of life !
cute song............some of the faces in his band look familiar.............anyone care to enlighten me?? I enjoyed this slice of memorabilia..........
Alan sounds very much like Georgie Fame. Both of them are huge talents, typical of so many class acts out of the UK in the 60s. Where has it all gone nowadays?
@paulkate72 …Mr Big Trousers himself with his mix of would be American sound alikes. Yes, I am talking about 'X Factor', and assorted Hip Hop and R'n'B acts. God I feel old!
@NCW250 Yes, pretty good was the Alan Price Set. Lots of good acts today too, on balance, but just generally better sounds then. Thanks for your comments.
hehe i love this song! this xmas in work we've a dancing santa that comes with an mp3 built in... ive added this to it so now my customers think im slightly odd .... but ive seen them smile when it comes on! hehe
How Great! This was one of the first 45's my brother brought home. I remember the record company was "Parrot." Oh, how funny! I know it's actually a Randy Newman song. Thank you for posting!
This song came out when I was at parachute school in the UK in 67.We had a bald headed lad called Charlie,We used to sing Charlie Smith & his amazing skin hair. Thanks, brings back wonderful memories.
Charmingly exuberent performance of a classically catchy tune, but I can't help but feel there's something extremely sarcastic about this song. The lyrics are a little 'askew', somehow...
@Slammerworm1 That fits with Randy Newman. He recorded the song himself for his 1972 album "Sail Away." As with many of his albums, "Sail Away" has a concept to it. Almost all the songs are about liars.
I have always loved this song...was just a little kid when it was out but loved it then and still loveit!! I went to see Alan Price the other night and he was AMAZING, so talented. Met him after the show and got his autograph and he was really lovely too :)

Alan still sounds and looks as fresh today as he did 40 years ago.
When he recorded this song (and a plethora of other Randy Newman songs), Newman sold no records and he sure was glad about the exposure he got from Alan and other artistes who sang his songs.
Does anyone know whether this was Colin Hodgkinson playing the bass on this? It looks like him, and the bass line is certainly good enough for it to be him!
I have to agree with most comments here, there's something about this song that brings back so many happy memories ....I think it's called nostalgia , Thanks for the post.
I think its the memory of the vicious bear attacks that occured in the late 1970's in the smoky mountains in North carolina and tennessee. Good times, happy times. One bear totally tore through our volswagon bus and cooler we had stored in it. We fled to the public bathrooms and had to stay there for hours until the park rangers told us that the coast was clear. I wrote this song about that experience.
There's something so magical about 60's songs like this one, I was very young when this was in the charts but I loved it and all the others even then and still do, I don't know what was in the air back then but whatever it was has long gone, maybe forever, oh well, we still have our memories eh??.
@proff180 People remember things more vividly from their youths usually. Its a fact. But this song is sweet. I'm 19 and R. Newmans one of my favorite songwriters.
@proff180 Would you say this year 1967;was the best year for 'Pop' MUSIC writing this country ever had,if not what in your opinion would be the best year for english 'POP song writing?

Great to see this. Saw him at Burnley Mechanics and sat on front row and shouted at him to sing this at end of his performance. He did and it was brilliant. The whole performance was excellent. Never had the chance to see him when I was younger. Comes across as a genuine guy and not a jumped up shit with no talent like some of them today. Him and Georgie Fame were themselves. Amy Winehouse is another brilliant artiste because she is genuine. It's great having youtube for all the good memories.
