Some song writers prior to the 80s didn't get paid for their work. Many of the songs Elvis sang were originally written by black song writers. He is still making money even dead but many of the writers died in poverty

(Dolly parton once backed out of a deal to have Elvis record a song she had written because of this.) Then, Col. Parker would turn around and collect a 50% agent fee from Elvis. (The standard is 10%.)
