Hey, I want to get a new lens soon. I was wondering if I need IS for lets say taking video of sports, if I dont have IS will the footage be very shaky? What would you recommend, the 55-250 or the 75-300 usm?
@Mr8L8X I own both lenses, and I recommend the 75-300 USM because of the better build and photo quality. Unless you need IS, the 55-250mm isn't that spectacular. Check my Flickr for photos from both.
@arun466 60d is better if your shooting sports or something like that. better autofocus too. its only around 200 dollars more. if your gonna buy a t3i look at t2i's because its 200 dollars less and the only difference is the all angle LCD
Hey, great video :) I was wondering if anybody could tell me whether they think it would be worth me paying an extra £40 for this lens with USM or not. I'm not certain how much of an impact USM makes. Thanks
@lhlee888 let me give you an example between a laptop worth $299 & $499.. obviously the 499 has better feature and bigger memory but still you can both use them for basic staff like inet, chatting, documents etc. it's the same thing w/ the lens. hope i answered your question. :)
Not really good for vids, no IS, no constant aperture, long focal length, sucks on low light, but if you are doing videos in the morning or afternoon its alright
@VannMichaelKohler Yes, it's nice fit. If you plan to use a tripod, you will never have blurry shots, but if you plan to do more hand held, you might want to consider a lens with IS such as the 55-250mm. Both are great, you can't go wrong either way.
@mateusz318921 Thank you for the kind words! Yes, I shot the picture of the dolphins while on vacation in Las Vegas. Surprisingly, that was one of the first shots I had taken with this lens! (I bought the lens right before leaving for Vegas)
@fsimba987 What type of lenses are you looking for? Wide-angle, zoom, primes? And for flashhes, I would recommend the Canon 430EX II or the Sigma 610-Super.
@pbwarrior42 Thats the physical length of the lens or focal length. If used on a crop frame (APC sized) sensor such as the Rebels, XXD or 7D, it's technically a 480mm lens.
i want to buy a lens for birds photography, as i'm a beginner my budget is not so high & i'm still confused in 55-250& 75-300? so what would you suggest?
@bhushanshet1992 The choice is pretty much up to what you are trying to do. If you are taking pictures from far away, you will appreciate the extra focal length on the 75-300mm (about 480mm on a crop sensor body such as Rebels or D series) but if you don't plan on using a tripod, the IS on the 55-250mm will help. In my opinion, I like the pictures taken on the 75-300mm over the 55-250mm, but it's a toss up only because of the IS. So if you plan to use a tripod most of the time, get the 75-300mm.
Thanks for the review, i've bought exactly the same lens two days ago it cost me £243 in fact i went to buy 55-250mm witch has got IS feature (£189) but they didn't have it in store. my question is, if it was you witch one would you prefer ?
@hirevi To be honest, you can't go wrong with either lens. The 70-300mm is an EF mount, so when put on a Rebel body or EOS 50D,60D, 7D, etc, the actual focal length is122-480mm (x1.6 crop factor) so you obviously are getting much more zoom out of the 70-300. On the other side, the 55-250mm is wider, and more versatile and all around a better focal length. Plus, you get IS. Having owned both, I do prefer the 55-250mm for an every day lens, but I think image quality is much better on the 70-300mm
@eaaisadreamer Personally, I would choose the model with the USM module. In a sense, it allows for faster, more precise focus at a much quieter sound. Highly recommend the USM.
I just sold this lens, it was so frustrating taking video with this lens without stabilizer. I use the canon t2i (550D). I recommend the 55-250 IS lens over this.
@xexodusx Agreed. Their are benefits with both lenses, but for video, IS is a must. Although the glass on the 70-300mm USM is far superior to the 55-250mm.
@TheUFOeffect Some teleconverters are made to add an extra glass element to a filter (such as a wide-angle teleconverter or .45x teleconverter) You just have to check to see whats compatible with your camcorder. BUT, no DSLR lenses work on camcorders.
I've taken many photos zoomed to 300mm on a sunny day without tripod and it turned out to be sharp! Make sure you set it to centre point focal point and make sure the ISO is 400-800 or even higher depending on lighting conditions. I used shutter priority with shutter settings between 1/800 - 1/1200. Sharp as heck even when zoomed to 300mm.
@kiopu65432 Sadly, the focusing ring does rotate, but that should not turn you away from the lens. Most lenses under $600 don't offer a fixed filter ring. I use a polarizer on this lens, and it works fine.
@kiwikat True, its a better bargain, but at the time, the 55-250mm was not available. Also, this lens fits EF mount cameras, where as the EF-S 55-250mm fits only Rebel and crop frame cameras.
@iTalkTech why do u recomment canon over other brands? any reason please? Cuz i am seriously confused which one i should buy, either, Sigma 75-300mm APO or Canon EF 75-300mm USM. Please suggest me one. Also, even without an Image Stabilizer, will there be any problem if i dont use Tripod?
@dontmailme77 Personally, I love going with the name brand. But don't let that be the reason when it comes to lenses. Tamron, Sigma, Nikon, and Canon all make wonderful lenses. At the price of this 75-300mm, I recommend the Canon because of the wonderful optics, 58mm filter size, and USM technology (faster AF). I love Tamron/Sigma, but at the price difference between these teles', Canon shows the best results and is my recommended buy.
@iTalkTech thanks a lot. By the way, is it necessary to use Tripod with the Canon EF 75-300mm USM? Because i seroiusly DONT wanna use tripod, photography is just my hobby. Its not my profession.
@dontmailme77 if you cant understand why you need a tripod at certain times with this lens, then i cant see how you can even call photography your "hobby". to me it seems your skill level is somewhere around myspace photography.

@SepTeMarDyKelLe Potentially. If the concert is outdoors and in good light then it should perform well. It's not superior in low light conditions.
