@pyjamasbaby This is brilliant rendition .... phrasing/ musicality/ ornmentation...pity more of our traditional instrumentalists would not listen to singers like this lady and learn from her.
I have never been more deeply moved by any singing ever in my life. To put that in perspective: I've been on stage with Pavarotti, Bobby McFerrin, Ricardo Muti and the Philadelphia Orchestra, and others of that ilk; but I have never enjoyed any singing more than yours. Please, please post more of your beautiful singing! Good Luck to you.
I love this song since i first heard it on bbc radio scotland. too bad the beginning isn't on here because that part is what "hooked" me on this song.
An bhfuil aon áit ina féidir liom athrú béarla a fháil ar ámhrán sean nós? Ba mhaith liom iad a thuiscint ach níl mo chuid gaelinn ar an gcaighdeán ba chóir dó a bheith!
I'm Diaspóra na nGael (1st gen, my Ma's the only one of 7 who left - she'll go back eventually and I'm trying a way to go back too) so never learned it as a kid, but I'm able to fix that now. So are you.
It's a bit help that my Ma is fluent as I've got someone to speak with as I learn. Ask around, it's not uncommon for Irish (esp' older ones) to be fluent and noone know.
They got her surmane wrong - it's Elsafty. Great singer, great tradition, and a really friendly person. I got to know her on a course some years ago. I really enjoyed spending time with her, and I also learned a lot from her teaching sean nós.
You obviously haven't travelled much,India alone has 112languages, 1000 dialects 30000 religions. A vast array of musical styles but don't believe me. According to the USA Library of Congress,India is the most culturally, linguistically and genetically diverse geographical entity AFTER the African continent . Israel is a colony. It's possible to love Sean Nós & Welsh male choirs & Reggae & Bangra & Clare fiddle style & Belgian Techno but not if you are wearing racist lenses.
I love our culture, and we have the right to keep it. Our heritage has value, and our traditions are worth preserving, whether the diversity crowd likes them or not.
Hey Mikey McCrash, she is singing tonight in Dublin with Stefan Galt & Tina Sani an acclaimed Pakistani ghazal singer, so I think you can take it that "the diversity crowd likes them" & she likes the diversity crowd too. It's not about dilution but confidence in our culture.
Well why isn't Pakistan more "diverse?" Why isn't India more "diverse?" Why isn't Israel more "diverse?" Whay isn't Africa more "diverse?" What about Asia?
Yeah, you really didn't research that one... India in particular is one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world... unless you think everyone in India belongs to the same culture cos they have the same skin colour?
Really cool stuff. Haunting and memorable. My only criticism is in the enunciation. It's been a common trait in the Sean Nós over the years to let the notes and words sort of fly into each other without the proper enunciation. The art of the Sean Nós is to get the story across to people and this can't happen if it is too difficult to decipher the words. Other than that she's terrific.
Beautifully done - and she didn't stop to drink during the entire song. ;) Really, very beautifully sung - a pleasing voice on her. Is this woman recorded?
It's so much easier to surrender emotion in a language where one didn't have to yell at kids to keep them out of trouble. All that said. Blah Blah. I would of liked to of been there. Yelp she's good

The way she draws out Eleanor's name is unspeakably beautiful. I'd slit my own throat to sing like that.
