Psycho Deep Fry... wasn't that one of the songs on here too?
Loved this game... it is way up there with Road Rash 3. They just don't make games like these anymore, but you'd think they would with all the rag-doll physics out there these days. They really ought to do a remake with wild down hill sections and ramps and stuff. I used to do downhill rollerblading when i was 15, and would love to see something like this come back out on playstation or something. Rated 5/5.
This game is the 90s. Love the grunge style and counter-cultureness of it. If you're not a Genesis/MegaDrive fan, you might not realize what a technical accomplishment this game is... the Sega had zero zoom hardware so it's doing the whole thing in software, faster than its cousin Road Rash games, all while throwing more on the screen at a higher framerate with more responsive control.
Also nice technical touches-interesting use of shadow/highlight to wring out some more onscreen colors and provide those silhouette/spotlight effects, pitched pcm samples in the music.
This game looks positively amazing next to Road Rash 3 which was AFTER this and looked, sounded and played like a turd.
When I say "zero zoom" I mean it had no hardware sprite scaling. No hardware to do this.
I code Genesis as a hobby--the way it is done is essentially software doubling pixels horizontally and doubling horizontal line draws, which multiplies the size of the sprite. It definitely consumes CPU to do this. The road shown in the old EA games is either a palette effect (very doubtful!) or a trick on a layer using hscroll to draw it out alternately to create a 3D effect.
Other games that use similar applications to achieve an effect like this are Batman & Robin and Treasure games like Dynamite Headdy and Gunstar Heroes.
I loved a lot of the music in this one, but it it sounds radically different than most of the music on the Genesis. It almost sounds like it's not produced by the YM2612's synthesizer and was based on really low-quality samples of actual guitars or something like that. The sound was always kinda garbled, but it sort of fit the style of the music.
If it actually used samples, that would explain why the cart was so big (in terms of ROM).
What amazes me is that no-one's ever made any covers or remixes of this awesome music. As of right now, however, there's a remix of Cheese Grater on this site by supralightning.
Well, if I DO end up rounding up some people who are interested in this project, you're definetly somebody who's going to have to take a listen to the material :P.
What no one understands about this game is that Skitchin's music was no doubt influenced by the Grunge rock scene in the 1990s. Thats why the music sound the way that it does. I had no idea what grunge was back then. But after hearing bands like alice in Chains, and SoundGarden. I paid close attention to the guitar riffs and I was like "OOOOOOOOH, Skitchin has the same sound!". If they remade it, they wouldn't give the same its own music. They would just throw in shitty license songs.
huge fan of both Road Rash and Skitchin......music is better for Skitchin on Genesis, but soundtrack for Road Rash 3D on Playstation was tight (lots of Soundgarden).
man the bass in this game is really roaring, the elements of this game its music are great it has some really grunchy music and some groovy music ala pantera.
Skitchin' and Road Rash were great times on the Genesis. Too bad the race-combat genre ended up getting divided up into seperate genres in the next-gen era.

Sad how they never did a remake of this. I'd love to see a PS3 version of it, using the full engine from the console like Metal Gear Solid 4 did.

"Zero zoom", it's called sprite scaling. Road Rash 3 sucked ass (wierd digitized bikes) but I loved the first two.

It is using pcm samples on the guitar stuff. Pretty damn inventive really. All the 2612 is doing is the bass and the keyboard type lead.
