@taboombly I think it's because the only 2 stadiums used in Melbourne for AFL, Etihad and MCG, are in much closer proximity to everyone and are easier and quicker to access, which means larger crowds, while Sydney is quite the opposite. Also, the NRL don't have as much members as the AFL does, but membership numbers have sharply increased over the past 2 years because of the significantly increased advertising from the NRL and the clubs, so you will see much larger crowd averages eventually...
