@gregapage you are a retard because why are you even looking at the appearance what matters is the music and Sarah Chang is beautiful unlike your face behind a computer screen jerk
It is a good interpretation. However I prefer Josef Suk's one. He have played it with wonderful expression because he is Czech and Dvořák's great grandson therefore the concert is in his veins. This interpretation is flat (but technically good) and sometimes a bit of out of tune. You can hear the difference in 3rd movement.
battleblades: I really dont understand your kind of opinion about losing a childhood time if one grows up with profound stuffs! See, I read philosophical works since I was 12 [and in my 3rd language!], memorize Bruch's violin conc and bunch of classical era works, played the guitar, etc, etc. FYI, not a bit I feel like losing my childhood for not doing CRAPS.
What makes you think children can only be happy with SHALLOW CRAPS?
I think Josef Suk's is much better playing this concerto then KWC. he is also on you tube and is the great grandson of Dvorak. It seemed to me her vibrato was a bit to fast and nervous for this concerto but don't get me wrong. KWC is amazing.
Sarah Chang plays violin very well; however, she sometimes doesen't respect the real rhythm of the concerts she plays, and forces the rest of the orchestra to follow her. She also moves herself too much during the execution. I would like you to present Laura Marzadori (see the video I put above, even if it doesen't concern Dvoraks violin concerto).
It seems YouTube doesn't allow links in comments. Run a search for International Music Score Library Project or Petrucci Music Library You will find legal downloads of public domain sheet music. She is so talented. Just so talented. However, I don't believe that I am the only one who thinks she has lost something since her younger days in terms of portraying her very deep musical understanding.
Her tone is so sweet, her intonation near flawless. I just do not like the overdone phrasing and the swells in every longer note.
@battleblades i disagree with the loss of musical interpretation. i think if anything, its grown massively. the thing i think she might have lost since her childhood is unfettered technique. but nonetheless, she is the greatest violinist in the world
@battleblades I actually believe the opposite. It seems as if her technique has become a bit unstable...she's not the same violinist at age 14 or 18 who would always deliver a 100% flawless technical concert...whereas today, her technique is very much impeccable, but not as consistant, but her musical understanding has grown so much over the years. I've heard her live many times and her performances these days are much more musical than ones given 10-15 years ago.
@battleblades That's an interesting observation. I take an entirely opposite view, I must say. Her early interpretations were wonderful, not least because she *was* so young. But she brings far greater emotional and intellectual depth to her playing today than in her early teens, something she herself is the first to point out. I suspect that most, if not all of those who think otherwise are not front line musicians.
@battleblades She is certainly highly talented but the concerto is not to my taste at all.... It sounds very much like Dvorak had to write a concerto for violin...as the trend probably was back then.... it sounds awful, but this comment has nothing to do with Sarah's formidable talent...
@battleblades I agree with you, but I don't perform or have the depth of understanding of the piece anywhere near hers. So my opinion is like a student commenting on their teachers playing, or phrasing of the music. How much value does my opinion really have.
At first, I did not like her aggressive style. A member of the audience even described her performance as "ignorant". I complete disagree with that and think she is extremely good. I now like her playing a lot.
That's exactly what happened to me. I think she sees more vivid color of music than an ordinary person. I do not like some of her performance now, but there is no doubt she is extremly good artist.

Sarah is good at what she does but, as with all professional violinists who are shuffled all over the country, her performance is unfeeling. I don't know why people go to these performances. They leave me cold. I'd rather watch Aaron Moffatt play this in my own neighborhood any day. I'm sure a lot of you would rather watch their local violinists. The pieces stay the same, and the performances are sometimes spectacular.
Excuse me, but I've heard some of Aaron Moffatt's interpretations and are nothing compared to Sarah's. I understand you like your neighbor better, but Sarah is superior in everyway, and that's the way it is.
Responding to raist84, I strongly disagree. Sarah is a great musician, but Aaron is quite a good violinist and puts on a great performance. If you always rely on what other people say in order to decide what's worthy of your time, you're missing out on a lot of wonderful performances. Pay attention to your local musicians. They may surprise you.
OH really, well I think that Gil Shaham can't control his mouth, cuz when he plays, his mouth moves all the time. Sarah chang is the best violinist in the country, it even say that on her google page. go google her and you'll know how good she is!!!!!

I would beg to differ and say that Anne Sophie-Mutter or Midori are far better than Sarah Chang. Not saying that Sarah isn't great--she is, but when you say she's the best so far, I don't agree.
actually it's not the playing that makes her so good, one could very well be the best player-player, but for me,If I'm watching someone on the stage and they look like they don't want to be there, I'm gonna feel uncomfortable. I've watched both anna-marie and midori, and though they both are extremely good look disconned. One can tell that Sarah loves what she does because her emotions are into it. That's what makes me want to watch her.
Hillary Hahn is undoubtedly the best female violinist today. Her Sibelius rivals that of Heifetz and Oistrakh, and her Bach is as clean as Milstein but much more passionate.
I don't know about that. Sarah Chang's sibelius may not be the best in some ways, but she is something worthy of rivaling. Not to mention, she brings something else to the table. no matter how good you are, people like to see that you enjoy yourself while playing, and she has this presence that is unsurpassed. there are many, many others that can rival with her (not very easily, in my opinion) but her expressions make her music all the better. They bring the mucic out.
Midori looks disconnected? Have you ever seen her? She moves more than anyone else. She's totally into her music. She comes within inches of falling off the stage at all her concerts.
i love midori's music but i think moving a lot is not the best thing and it doesn't mean you are connected..i don't mean midori is not, how could we ever judge a violinist like her!!
i think he posted that because some people were calling her midori in earlier posts................just a thought but maybe you should follow your own advice?
Nobody referred to her as Midori. We were discussing whether Midori seems connected to her music or not. So should I say it? Should I? Or should i just assume that you now know to READ BEFORE YOU POST YOUR STUPIDITY?
I don't know what that guy's talking about, but I don't see an ouce of cockiness in her. Sh'e just used to being on stage, is all! You gotta remember, sh'e been doing this on stage since she was eight!
This is very intense and passionate performance from Sarah Chang. Also, technically demanding and an extremely difficult piece. What a powerful opening, I partially like the first movement too.
geniushaydn i totaly agree with you. and it is the same with dvorak's requiem. usually people compare it with verdi's and say that is not good enough or boring enough but for me, is such a masterpiece of wonder. it is so spiritual and deep and with a such rich sheet.
Dvorak is much like Haydn. Criminally underrated. Both D and H believed in composing strong melodies which recapitulate through the movement. Granted they composed in different time periods and with different styles but the fact remains; they just don't get the credit they should. This VC is one of the top three VC in the romantic period, only surpassed by Mendelssohn and Bruch.
Dvorak is wonderful and she can play it well. Dvorak asks for a lot of change in texture and feeling from the artist--she gets the job done. She's not an isolated player either, she seems to stay in contact with the orchestra involving them in her "realm".
gorgeous performance. child's play for her. I really like her on this piece. Isnt the Czech Philhamonic and all guys orchestra? What I really like is the confidence she has - lessor famale musicians might have wilted. Not Sarah.
What a concerto! I love it ...! As musicality , I preffered the Mendelsohn ,the Lalo , and the Tchaikovsky. Now , the Dvorak comes next to them for me. It is complex and deep . Also , it requires a great technique . Beautiful!
I have some formal questions: I assume this is a sonat form 1st movement? The 2nd movement has the classical A-B-A form and the last movement the classic rondo A-B-A-C-A-B-coda. but this 1st movement is strange! does the development start at 3.00 or at the beginning of the next clip? I don´t hear a second and/or closing group except for the tutti at 1.55.
Hi jowox. I'm not exactly sure what you mean but cos the movement was over 10 minutes I had to split it. So part 2 is the 2nd part of the 1st movement. I can't wait for the day that YouTube extends this period!
yes I know you had to split it. the timings I mentioned concern this clip, the start of clip 2 is the beginning of the development or is it way into the development?
Hi jowox. Phew! I don't think I'm the right person to answer your question??? I LOVE classical music and listen to it all the time, but know very little about the technical aspect of it. I couldn't even tell you what rondo means! Fast maybe???
I'm far from being an expert in the technical aspect but I comes to my mind that you should consider that Dvorak's work is inside the romantic period and they didn't used to respect de sonata form in the same way Mozart and Beethoven (at least in his early symphonies) did...
I would like to know what do you think to see if I can learn a bit more.
Just read on Wikipedia that she started violin at 4 and auditioned for the Juilliard School when she was 6, playing the Bruch violin concerto!! (I'm not yet familiar with this piece). The prodigiousness of some is awe-inspiring! And annoyingly inexplicable! These stats sound even more prodigious than some of the greats, I wonder why she isn't as well known. Maybe earliness doesn't always go hand in hand with prodigiousness and skill. Hope not, because I started at 16! :S
most people start playing at the age of 5 or 6,some at seven. in Asia people start even earlier, at 3 or 4. She is well known, by the way. To become a really famous musician (soloist I mean) you need much luck as well e.g. knowing the right people at the right time, having enough money to pay the education (Julliard is horrifying expensive) and so on..
i love her smile. she's without a doubt one of the most talented players in the world and yet she has this "humble" aura about her especially when she smiles.
It's amazing how she can express so many differnt emotions, while keeping the right style throughout the concerto. The first movement is probably my favorite; the theme is so intense and dramatic! It's always enjoyable watching her perform. Her recording of this is fantastic as well!
I think all serious musicians must love Antonin Dvorak. He was such a creative genius and such a STAR. A work by Dvorak makes a star of any musician who masters it. Sarah Chang is marvelous and Dvorak, himself, would love her! Thanks to them both!
I just love Sarah Chang. I met her in Daytona a few years back and actually that was my first concert that I went to and what a concert. She is such a sweetheart and such a passionate performer. Oh to all of those haters of hers out there. If you don`t have anything nice to say then just don`t say anything at all, because she is brilliant and has earned her way to the top.
the only hungarian about him was that his native country, bohemia, was part of the Austria-Hungarian empire. If you were a Czech national and more familiar with his compositions, you'd recognize the beautiful bohemian melancholy in his music, it is very different from the Hungarian or Germanic styles.
I think you two talking about different people. If I'm right you are talking about Dvorak, who was of course a great Czech composer, but the guys initially was talking about Joseph Joachim, who was a Hungarian violinist.

geniushaydn i totaly agree with you. and it is the same with dvorak's requiem. usually people compare it with verdi's and say that is not good enough or boring enough but for me, is such a masterpiece of wonder. it is so spiritual and deep and with a such rich sheet.

There is no doubt that Sarah Chang is really good. However, for best female violinist, Hilary Hahn takes the cake.

gorgeous performance. child's play for her.

I don´t hear a second and/or closing group except for the tutti at 1.55.
jowox 3 years ago
Hi jowox. I'm not exactly sure what you mean but cos the movement was over 10 minutes I had to split it. So part 2 is the 2nd part of the 1st movement. I can't wait for the day that YouTube extends this period!
Take care...
Oxy151268 3 years ago
yes I know you had to split it. the timings I mentioned concern this clip, the start of clip 2 is the beginning of the development or is it way into the development?
jowox 3 years ago
Hi jowox. Phew! I don't think I'm the right person to answer your question??? I LOVE classical music and listen to it all the time, but know very little about the technical aspect of it. I couldn't even tell you what rondo means! Fast maybe???
Take care...
Oxy151268 3 years ago
I'm far from being an expert in the technical aspect but I comes to my mind that you should consider that Dvorak's work is inside the romantic period and they didn't used to respect de sonata form in the same way Mozart and Beethoven (at least in his early symphonies) did...
I would like to know what do you think to see if I can learn a bit more.

wonderful piece!!!!!! the way Sarah plays it makes it even more wonderful!!!

thelightisahead 3 years ago
most people start playing at the age of 5 or 6,some at seven. in Asia people start even earlier, at 3 or 4. She is well known, by the way. To become a really famous musician (soloist I mean) you need much luck as well e.g. knowing the right people at the right time, having enough money to pay the education (Julliard is horrifying expensive) and so on..

Maybe they meant the Juilliard Pre-College Division.

i love her smile. she's without a doubt one of the most talented players in the world and yet she has this "humble" aura about her especially when she smiles.

I wonder when he wrote this compared to his Concerto for Cello Concerto very different works....
Beautiful playing.
cellodude1 4 years ago
He wrote this while in America, I THINK, I'm not sure. For Joseph Joachim, Czech violin virtuoso.
ThaSchwab 4 years ago
No. He wrote this before his american stay. Yes, He wrote this for Joachim, but Joachim was Austrian violin virtuoso. ;-)
kykla01 4 years ago
We're both wrong lolz....he was Hungarian. :P
And sorry, guess it wasn't written in America.
ThaSchwab 4 years ago
the only hungarian about him was that his native country, bohemia, was part of the Austria-Hungarian empire. If you were a Czech national and more familiar with his compositions, you'd recognize the beautiful bohemian melancholy in his music, it is very different from the Hungarian or Germanic styles.
dr3Am3r73 3 years ago
I think you two talking about different people. If I'm right you are talking about Dvorak, who was of course a great Czech composer, but the guys initially was talking about Joseph Joachim, who was a Hungarian violinist.
