  • What a perfectionist, I just don't have that kind of commitment and I hate myself for it because I so want to play this tune even just an eighth as good,, keep the videos coming,,,, there great!!

  • fantastic man. I still need a lot of work but I can play whammer jammer all the way through now and tought myself to overblow fairly well, in an attempt to sound like magic Dick and James Cotton (which is a futile attempt indeed, but a beneficial one) . all i can do is work my ass off an listen to the classic harpists. Just wanted to say thank you, Adam. and wanted to give you an update on my progress with of our beloved instrument. many thanks to your magnificent tone. Ol' Nat would be Proud.

  • my friend Adam thank you for all the things i ve learned from you.Creetings from Greece,Fotis

  • houa magnifique merci

  • dude you blow a mean fuckin harp

  • Aloha,

Sounds like you're a bit rusty, I think you're too paranoid of yer neighbors. That's what I have to put up with, too.damn!

forget the friggin tsunami...yeah, close call, huh?

    Youuuu got it.

You just need a little (shame on you) soakin...lol!

And I don't mean the harp!

I can (almost) do it. I'll show you on Youtube one of these days.Talk is cheap, I know...

Great slap back room..you got that Little Walter sound.Keep it up,brudda!!

I'll be waiting for your M.D. vid. I have some ?'s, too.

  • nice

  • Wow Adam.... I can't begin to thank you enough, i've been playing for about a month now and have learned so much in that short time, I'm jumping right in on this and can bend with athority up to the 8th hole blowing out, is there anything besides soaking that will make the reeds9 and 10 easier to play ? I watched your video about tuning and have had great success with my harps. Thanks so much, its been a blast adding this instument to my list

  • The soaking trick is the only trick I've got. Once your lips get strong enough, you'll be able to do it without soaking.

  • @halboudreau I learned bending from the book "Bending the Blues" by David Harp. He includes in-depth explanations of the nuances of each bend on the whole harp, in addition to discussions of general bending technique and exercises. I don't recall what I read about holes 9 and 10, as that was 7 years ago, but tongue exercises might help. Push up on the roof of your mouth with your tongue as hard as you can and hold it. Or with your teeth closed, push against your teeth on the sides or front

  • First time I got it, I needed to soak my Marine Band A harp--run it briefly under water in a sink, then shake it out. That destroys the harp pretty quickly, but it lets you get the 10 hole blow bend.

  • Hey Adam, I am 12 years old and have been playing for 2 months and can play a few things but when do you think i should start to learn whammer jammer? And can you recommend any songs i should learn?:)

  • Hey Adam I just left a comment about Jason Ricci's lessons and how great the are. I couldn't help but say that yours are great too. Plus you guys both do these for FREE. That's really nice. Sweet version of whammer jammer!

  • nice setup too

  • it'd sound twice as good if you had a band playing behind you.

  • Good try. It's close but no cigar. Kudos for creating some of the best harp technique here on youtube. Lots of posers. Back in '75 I read that Dick used a Marantz tube preamp and got some unique fatness with his astatic mic. Still think that J Geils was one of the all-time blues bands of the century.

  • at 0:20 seconds in...what technique is that?

  • its a draw bend on the 4 hole but he tongue blocks and moves his tongue to get this swish thing goin on the comb of the harp

  • I heard one day that only customized harmonicas or Golden Melody and Suzuki harmonicas could do overblows, your Marine Bands are customized?

Thank you and follow like this!

  • No, I use off the shelf harps.

  • Astonishing.

  • i love the echo. you are the man. you can hang with the best of the best. i cant wait to see the Satan and Adam documentary.

  • Hi adam, I was wondering how do you do that sound at the beggining, I always thought it was a 4-5 warble, but yours sounds more like a tongue-block technique, maybe vibrato, any tips on that? thanks and hope you had a happy birthday!

  • Magic Dick moves his tongue in and out to make that sound. I swish mine from side to side.

And no: we're not gay. We're harmonica players. We do what we gotta do

  • RIGHT ADAM, we are not Gay, well , actually i show the Tong Blocking and Flutter techs, to lotta pple in my country, but the take it seriously , and become fascinated by the technical Variety of this tiny magical Instrument!!! Greetings from AMin of Tunisia!! the Baklawa guy haha

  • hey man a harmonica players wife/girlfreind wont complain lol

  • I just wish you had the band backing you up and played without that nasty echo! You'd be great!

  • I lip purse a lot of stuff, especially the high notes, but I also tongue block a lot. Do both!

  • Gussow! You've got some textures going on there that I don't think Dick nails!

I've laid off this for a good while, but I've decided to throw myself in the deep end. Question: You're a lip purser, right? Seems this track leans a lot on tongue blocking. The parts you seem to struggle with make perfect sense to me. Would you say 'natural' tongue blockers are gonna pull this off easier? Conversely, my struggles lie with the vibrato on the intro and the 9 and 10 blows, which are more lip pursed.

  • God Dammit!!

WOW, dude, I'm soooo inspired to start learning the harmonica. Anyways I'd love to bend those notes and get that resonating deep sound one day, I know this might be a silly question but generally speaking, what would be the length of time for someone somewhat musically inclined to play half as good as you??? I love the way you play man! peace. I could see myself doing what you just did at a camping site and having all the chicks wet! :)

  • Well, I've been playing for 33 years. The fine points take more time than the basic competencies. So I'd guess it'll take you about ten years to get half as good. But if you practice hard, you can probably learn enough harp to make the chicks....happy......in about three years.

  • Kudzu, you're kinda the shit.

    Like, whew.

  • NICE!!! Awesome harping.

  • holy shit i swear parts of this jam sound like yr playin a guitar. those bends sound fuckin crazy...props to you n the licks you pull off w that tounge

  • how long have you been playing for?

  • 33 years.

  • nice!

  • OMG!

  • Makin those reeds dance..ya baby. JC

  • holy fuck that's great.

  • Wow! Now I really want to try hard to learn playing powerful songs like this one. Should be called "Power Harmonica"!!!

  • love it !

    You are great player !

  • loved it! you've got an amazing tongue ;)

  • I grew up with this song in the 70's. Played it to death. Everyone I knew played this at their parties. You're version is fucking brilliant!!! You're the new Magic Dick mate. (I've seen all of your clips) Fantastic! Love the bathroom acoustics too. (really adds to it) Would love to jam with you mate...

  • I just found your channel but Juke Joint Jimmy wrote "Whammer Jammer".

  • Juke Joint is Magic...

  • When the whole band contributed equally to the songwriting process, the writer's credit was given to Juke Joint Jimmy (a name conjured up by Peter Wolf). It's not a real person. As far as the track goes it was a whole band effort, but the harp is all MD's work.

  • man i wish i knew how to overblow!!!

  • This video is proof that practicing in the bathroom is a good thing to do! Great video, Adam. You've definitely got some serious stuff going on.

  • Great harp song. Thank you for sharing.

I liked the bassy horn-like quality of the 2nd take. I'm curious if your amp was setup different than the first on the video. Can you please tell us what amp you are using and how it is set? I also guessing the bathroom (we've always known that the shower is wildly popular spot to sing) actually has good acoustics.

Thanks for sharing the mistakes as well. Good to see accomplished players miss a little too.

  • Harpster:

I was using the same mic and Mouse amp on both takes, but you're right: the bathroom adds something. In addition, I processed the sound by adding a "large hall reverb" effect offered by iMovie. I'm surprised that you're the first to ask about this. Most of the sound was special effects. All solid state, too. No tubes!

  • thank you so very much for all these video's , ive been a guitarist for 10 years , and it's because of you i've recently picked up the harmonica! greetings from belgium!

  • Do I sense a little Tanqueray in this video?

  • No. Only one out of my 136+ videos was made when I'd had something to drink. (Not counting the Satan and Adam performance vids, of course.) I made this video in the morning, which is when I make the majority of my videos. I'm not a morning drinker.

  • Hi Adam! Your lessons are great.

I'm really interesting in what are you doing to play so good rhytmically. You play solo and finish your performance with exatcly the same tempo (about 100 bpm here). I practice with metronome and with music, with drummers a lot but when I go solo I usually finish my playing much faster then begin. How do you recommend to practice?

  • It's very important to be able to carry a groove. In particular, it's important to be able to play MORE intensely at certain points without speeding up. Many players confuse the two; when they start to play more intensely, they speed up. You need to be conscious of this tendency and deliberatly cut against it.

  • Thanks for the answer. I know this. Everything is OK when I play with metronome or with band. I start to play slightly ahead beat and with mory dinamycs. But alone - goes faster. You have great groove. Do you have it from the start or do you work more on it?

  • Thanks Adam!

  • how do you do that PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Wow

  • what a nice man

  • Thank you for putting up this interesting channel. Congratultion - 1 year!

  • I love you men!!!!

you are great, if I understand a little bit more of english y will learn to play like you

    ill keep triying

    Greetings from mexico

  • Pretty nice!

Tks for all this good stuff you've place on tube along this year.

    Big thanks from Brazil!

  • Thank you Adam for a year great fun and sharing of your knowledge!

    Big thanx from Holland

    Arjen

  • Your the man!! You make me want to be better!!

  • AHHHHHH Great, i can't wait for you to come to holland!!!!!

    Greatgreetz,

    Arjen

  • Adam,

Do you still live in Oxford, and if so do you play anywhere? I live in Hernando and it would be a friggin sin if I passed up the opportunity to see you play live.

  • Yes, I still live in Oxford. I'm playing with the Bluff City Backsliders on Saturday April 5 (2008) at Taylor Catfish, far as I know.....

  • what a good year for Blues Harp players - Thanks to Sir Adam Gussow. I written to the Queen with abit of luck you should be hearing from her soon regarding your Knighthood. Just don't tell her you are American

  • thankyou adam!

  • What kind of harp and what key?

  • Hohner Marine Band, A harp.

  • I'm guessing the reeds have to be adjusted just so in order to do those overblows on holes 9 and 10? (I'm assuming it's 9 and 10)...?

  • Those are actually blow bends on the 9 and 10 hole blow. They are not overblows. There is a difference.

  • Ah hah... Thanks for clarifying. So the reeds have to be adjusted just so, just right to do those blowbends?

  • Well not necessarly. I am able to do both blow bends without any reed adjustments. It may be a little helpfull for beginners to do the adjustments.

  • hes playing a honer marine band in te key of A

  • awesome :)

  • Happy anniversary dear Adam,

I send you good vibes and best wishes. Your generosity is priceless and really overwhelming. Whenever you plan to perform in Germany, you can stay at my place;)

    Cheers,

    Kro

  • I see why you played in the restroom the water was closer to put out the smoking harp playing WOW!! 6 stars for that

  • Adam, My english is bad, I hope you understand this. I can Only say THANK YOU for all. I´m you #1 fan from Argentina. I´ve learn so much with you. Subtitles in spanish please !! (jeje) I love the harmmonica and you make me love it more with every lesson. Thank you my friend !!!

  • Happy Anniversary. Many thanks for all the knowledge!! You are WAY too prolific - I'm having a hard time keeping up! ;-)

  • And it's been a privilege to watch every video you've done

  • Happy aniversary!

Great respect and great thanks for all your work. The inspiration and knowledge you've provided to so many is phenomenal.

  • I'd be willing to be your steady girl, if you don't already have one!

  • I've got a wonderful, sexy wife and she'd be upset, I'm afraid.

  • Thank you Adam. The gift of your knowledge and the greatness of your heart is much appreciated. Congrats on the 1 year anniversary. Your dedicated student,

    Gilles

  • Adam, Congratulations for the aniversary. You are the best. Big hug from london. Charlyharp.

  • I'm blown away by all these testimonials. Thanks, guys.

I'm surprised, BTW, that nobody has asked about the big reverb sound. Rather than add any effects to the harp, I actually processed the entire video using the "atrium" reverb effect on iMovie. Gotta love those Apple folks, always giving us new toys.

  • ADAM!

Thanks again for being such an inspiration. Since May 2007 You have inspired me to learn in what I thought was impossible and ignited a life long passion for the harp and Blues music.

    Donation is in the hat!

  • Actually, I think I used the "arena" reverb effect.

  • Funny, I thought it was the "Bathroom and open shower curtain" effect...

    :)

  • Adam

Thank you so much. I have only been playing for about four months. You and Jason Ricci have taught me everything I know about playing harp.

  • for those of you who have stumbled across this page. watch episode .000, .038, and this page. you will understand what adam has put into this and what it means to share an awesome talent with others.

"its only a gift if you give it away."

congratulations and thank you from the bottom of my our hearts

  • Thank you Adam for all your time and effort. I'm new and I never could find anyone that could teach this. The wonders of the internet.I was lost and now I'm found.WE can't thank you enough.

  • very great playing, I can't remember seeing you play a video of tributing one of your hero's that was a nice treat. You have gotton alot done in one year almost 5000 subscribers and even more fans and students. Can't wait to see what goes on in that magic dick video. Now you know your harp has taken you places or I should say still is and moving fast

  • Happy Ann & THANK YOU! As far as "mastering" the song, I think the only thing this excercise does is practice technique. Searching YouTube for Magic himself doing Whammer results in hits that are less than the Full House cut. I've come up with harp segments for Howlin'Wolf's Killin'Floor-but each time I play it, it comes out different (I think there are 2 diff versions on my 2 sites).

  • Your previous posters have commented on this-something that you have taught over the past year-it's not about perfection-yes, technique is crucial-but replicating only teaches technique. It does not teach how to play from the soul-the very thing that makes the blues..well..The Blues.

  • I agree. This is one reason why I very rarely have made videos in which I try to play another harp player's song note for note. In fact, this is the ONLY time I've done that, and I did it in the spirit of play, as a gift to my subscribers, who love the song. Why on earth would I want to sound EXACTLY like any other player? I'd rather sound exactly like myself. I'm proud that I managed to do that in this video: warts and all.

  • I'm glad to hear you say that, although in watching your videos, I knew you already felt that way -- but just to drive your point home to your viewers. My problem is that I am trying to break out of sounding like the originals. I still need technique so I'm not too upset about it yet. That, and 99% of my audience typically does not know the originals anyway !!!

    Peace Adam.

    And Thank you again.

  • nice going adam! One whole year of amazing video's. You've made the blues harp a little less of a mystery for us all. I hope that once you decide to stop you'll make the rest of your you tube vids available for us on dvd like you did with your first 33. I bought it a long time ago and it's the best instructional dvd i own. I hope you never stop but it feels like you allready did TOO much for us. THANKS A LOT and please do continue.. Greetzz

  • Well, I do have ALL my lessons--up through #100--available as QuickTime video zip files in packets of 10 lessons. I've put two up for sale on Modern Blues Harmonica (dot) com. They're very large zip files--150 mb or so. Should I put the rest up for sale?

  • Thank you for bringing it all to us this year! It has been an exciting ride!

As for Jammered...I got so tired just watching you that I had to nap after the video! Good gracious--the sheer EFFORT that takes!

  • Congratulations and happy anniversary. Most of all, thank you. :-)

  • Congrats on an extremely prolific year. Permit a bit of reminicense - police pullovers at the crossroads, the fender bassman smack session, and that silly hat atop your bookshelf! Keep it swingin' Gussow and from my woodshed to yours, have a great new youtube year

  • the fact that there are 6 or 7 pages of responses to this vid is a testament to how many lives you've touched this year through your teachings Adam. i'll bet you never imagined this a year ago. I would like to add that i have watched your lessons from the beginning and signed on as a subscriber some time ago. Thanks for the inspiration and the dedication to spreading the "word" and "world" of the blues harp.

  • I am totally jammerized!! happy anniversary. Thanks for your gift of knowledge this past year. One of everybodies favorite harp songs. Looking forward to another great year of your vids. thanks Adam.

  • Glad to hear about the well deserved anniversary gift from Magic Dick!

  • Very very good! You did the middle part very nice! I'm doing it more simple : 2draw-3draw to 5draw-6draw-5draw-5blow-6blow-5blow-4draw.I'm a beginner and I like the way you teach.

I'd like to thank you for all you did on youtube and your website. Thank's for your energy. I picked up a harmonica in november last year and it became one of my best friend.

  • Best regards Prof G.Thank you and please continue to do what you have been doing brilliantly for the past 12 months.Remarkable and memorable posts.LOVE them.

    Sean

  • EXCELLENT!!!!!!! Thanx for all the lessons.

  • I bow down to you Sir Adam. Happy anniversay. Can't thank you enough for all you have done for us youtubers. I personally play better than i ever thought i would and it's all down to your inspirational lessons. . . . . . . What key was that in? . . . . . .only kidding. Luke

  • haha nice

  • Thanks for a great year! And for introducing me to the sweet sound of a wood comb harp. Marine bands rock.

  • Cool vid's, And thanks for all the vid's as well its been about 1 year since I started playing harp and you have been a big help as well as jason ricci and my old teacher that i may contact later on cheers for keeping my going

  • I haven't responded to many of your videos, but I've watched them all. Many, many thanks for all your time and effort. I wonder if, a few decades from now, a bunch of harp players won't be citing you as their major influence, just as many do with Magic Dick today. Not too shabby for a "journeyman", Adam. :)

  • Sweet renditions of the Magic Classic, and congratulations on one year of superlative mentoring.

  • It's been a great ride!!!!

    Thanks Adam!!!

    D

  • well dont sir! what a fab. year it has been. I play the harp and understand it soooo much better, thanks to you.

keep it up and I cant wait to see the next video.

  • Happy YouTube Anniversary Adam!!!

Thanks many times over for sharing your gift with the world!

    -BB

  • Happy Anniversary Adam! I've watched all your videos, many of them several times at least. Soooo Good!

Looking forward to your conversation with Magic Dick... I bet he even flubs up Whammer Jammer sometimes, even as many times as he has played it over the years!

I wish I could do that opening tongue flutter like you do (not to mention the rest of the song!).

God Bless and hoping for many more videos.

  • happy anniversary and god bless you sir for bringing harmonica joy to the masses. wonderful vid's!

  • Ok I was getting corrective laser surgery today and all I could think about was what Adam would do for a video today.

That video was a blur... pun intended.

    Thanks for one year Adam

  • I'm sure all would agree Adam, that your efforts have helped us all to better understand and appreciate modern and classic blues harmonica. For many harmonica players this has been a year of growth and inspiration thanks largely to Adam Gussow.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge, your stories and parts of your life and history with us all. It's been a fascinating and fun year for me and I look eagerly forward to supporting your efforts for the year ahead.

    Well done sir.

  • Adam,

Thanks for all your effort, and putting your soul into this. You have done the masters proud.

Blues never is not about perfection. Blues is about the imperfection.

That's what the blues is. The imperfections of man, of woman, of all the evil in the world. And the blues is rising up agains all that evil, when we don't think we can, when we don't want to, when we don't need to. I came to the crossroads and I met Satan.

    And Adam... Peace.

  • oops...

    correction.

    Blues is not about perfection.

    LOL

  • Oh man your poor ears... In an enclosed room? Amped? Ouch...

Nice work Adam. I think your best lesson was teaching Thunkyfing. I love that song.

  • thanks adam for keeping the blues alive and introducing us to more blues men... you rock.

  • Your dedication to us all has now become legendary Adam, it's official! I for one vote you my YouTube oscar for services above and beyond. Thanks for an amazing, year-long harmonica knowledge share. Happy anniversary!

  • Well Adam what I saw was somewhere in ur second take, during the glissando section, you would hold the 5 hole draw a little too long. But thats me nit picking. It was very good. If I didn't know any better I would have thought it was magic dick himself

  • HI Adam,

Thanks for your valued tuition for a full year now! I consider myself very fortunate that I picked up the harp around the same time as your first post on Youtube. Looking forward to consolidating and refining the volumes you have taught over the next year. All the best for your Youtube newyear!

  • Happy anniversary! THX so much for all your effort!

  • ADAM.... NICE!!!!!!!! you inspire everyone

  • thanks Adam, what a year youve helped so much

  • Happy anniversary Adam! Once again, great video.. I can't tell you how much I appreciate what you do. Thanks a billion!

  • Congratulations and many thanks Adam.

Awesome Whammer Jammer w/o a band to chugg you on!!!! You are one Damn fine Human Being

    MH

  • happy anniversary Adam!

  • By the way, happy anniversary. I left some of your identified errors out of my posts for other people to identify. Good searching=)

  • In the second take you played the warble section the way magic did it, but the other errors were left uncorrected. In the third version, which you messed up the most, was played the best of the three but still contained the same errors as in the first version. I do not mean to degrade your playing, for you are on of the best, but I just wanted to let you know about your mistakes in whammer jammer. How I picked up on this song so quickly I do not know, but it is my favorite. I hope this helps.=)

  • First of I thank you very much for responding to my request of playing whammer jammer. I have been playing this song for about one month and I have deciphered about 90 percent of it. I have only been playing for three years yet I learned this song in only a month, and yes it is really true. Anyway, I no ( for the most part) what you were doing wrong in each take. The first take was, although very good, the worst of the three. The second was better and the third was best.

  • In the first take, the first thing I noticed was in the off beat 4 blow 3 draw part, your beat is off. I cannot upload a video to show you what I am talking about but your beat is definitally off. Also in the third rhythm section that is tongue blocked you did to many tongue slaps in the repeat of the 3draw 4draw 5 blow riff.Next, you are playing the warble section at 1:27 tongue blocked, Magic Dick played it puckered.

  • :O happy anniversary Adam!

  • Congradulations Addam, Happy aniverary. You are such a great inspiration. I have learned so much in two months. Please don't stop. I am a big fan.

  • Hi Adam, greetings from Bulgaria! You are amazing! Hope to see you in Sofia someday.

  • Can't wait for the Magic Dick info. Great 10 hole blow bends.

  • See the video comment I posted for more information. Tell me if I'm actually think I'm out of my mind telling you that, or if you think i'm right. Anyway again great stuff. It would be cool if everyone posted their version (even 2% of the song)

  • Congratulations on reaching 1 year from Spain! Looking forward to more of your outstanding harmonica playing- eres un maestro!

  • Back to the beginning both for us and for you. Great stuff, you must have worked quite hard.the second interpretation sounds the best to me(notes are clear and sounds really like whammer jammered).About the contest I don't know where you've done it wrong, but I think i can tell you where you do it wrong each time(I don't try to be pretentious, I can't reproduce 5 % of whammer jammer), but it is a rythme problem I think in the third phrase.

  • Thanks for all the videos. I'm looking forward to the next videos.

  • Mistakes or not, it was fantastic! Congrats on your FIRST year. Hope nobody needed to use the bath.

  • nice,harmonica blues FTW

  • i loved it! its been a great year for the harp
