Interestingly enough, this logo appeared on the 1979 VHS release of the film. All others, prior to 2001's DVD/VHS remastering, will feature either the 1972-84 Big W or the 1984 WB Shield.
That variant has been a point of curiosity with me. My hunch is that since the SUPERMAN series was bankrolled by the Salkind family (with them sharing ownership with WB until the studio bought out the family rights in the '00's), to contractually differentiate it from a movie bankrolled by WB they only i.d.'ed the movie as a "release" and not a "production" by Warner Communications.

Sorry, but you are incorrect.
This variant was used in films released through, rather than presented by, Warner Bros. around that time.
An example of another film that used this logo is Irwin Allen's "The Swarm."
