This could be more technical. It really didn't answer any cello questions or give me much (it did give a little) insight. The time (of over 8 minutes) was not utilized wisely.
About his fingerings: They are designed for efficiency and utilize his large hands very well. Notice that he prepares the extensions before ever setting the extended finger down meaning less shifts.
About his bow: No professional cellist will EVER play with a perfectly straight bow except when a passage requires it. A beautiful tone is created by moving the bow up and down the string to find the sweetest sound. Closer to the bridge is more focused, over the fingerboard is softer and rounder.
He looks like a retarded maniac whend he's playing and he's probably the whitest white person on earth and looks really gay. i know i'm gonna get a LOT of negative comments from all you classical music nerds. i know i know... he plays some kickass cello and has a very nice tone. He just looks like someone who should be sitting behind a computer 24/7 and not like a musician.
I think he actually means in relation to the strings - his bow is not actually perpendicular to them, which normally it should be. But in this case I'm pretty certain he is doing that to get the sound he wants.
hes really not that great of a cellist when you listen and analyze him. he always collapses his third finger in first position. He is out of tune on some notes and doesn't correct it before its a big deal.
After practicing this for a while I've got to say I don't like retaking the semiquavers - you always end up with an accent where there is none. The printed bowing seems to work better - take a look at the submissions so far: the only ones that aren't a complete mess use the printed bowing at the Allegro.
I did not like one thing. It is a masterclass, yes? So why did I not get the point of it? You are showing how it is better to play but it is too fast that I could understand that. Is it only my eyes or what? :/
I don't care who he plays for; I didn't like his fingerings. And just because he plays in the LSO does not mean he's good, though judging by what I saw, I think he is.
What does fame have to do with anything? I've seen some pretty popular things that were absolutely terrible. On the other hand I've seen great things that nobody even knows about.
For that matter some things are famous for being terrible. Fame simply isn't a good standard for measurement.
Fame especially doesn't represent skill. Tom Morello, for example, is by no means a good guitarist, yet he is famous as one. Why? Because he doesn't rely on his guitar playing.
I'm going to be practicing my butt off to try and get this piece down and I'm glad they have Bach Suite No. 1 for Solo Cello, Mvt. 1 Prelude as an option because I've been playing that for years.

Yeah, and as soon as I heard that guy say that the chosen group would be playing in New York City, in Carnage hall, that's when I completely lost interest. New York, the state where people keep on voting in communists president/governor/senator/whatever one after another after another after another. It's worth watching these videos just to get a nice idea of the sound you want! I'm a Euphonium player, and I'm studying listening to different instruments so I can learn how to emulate their sound on the Euphonium. This is awesome!
I really didn't notice any breathing. Anyway, one of my teachers always said breathing was just as important to string players as it is to woodwind or brass players.
I assume you respect classical music. If you do, you should respect classical musicians, and especially those that are very talented. Saying things like isnt really appropriate since music is an expression, and there fore, musicians do whatever they want to express better. If the breathing sound wont be herd on stage, then it's fine, the breathing is actually even better so show a sense of what is coming, fast slow, relax and stuff like that. show respect.^^
Your view is valid but not absolute. The legendary Pablo Casals had a reputation for 'grunting' in performance!
Breathing also helps in ensemble performance. I feel it is ok in an instructional video, but might be a problem if people submit videos for the performance and they breathe heavily in it. Do you think?
Breathing while performing any piece of music, in my opinion, shows that you can breathe while playing the music and that you can "feel" the music. I would count it as a plus.
I count it as a plus too. However, there are people who believe strongly in not making your breathing noticeable. I once played under one conductor who subscribed to this view. Kawazoekun here is also clearly from this camp. I'd like to stress that we shouldn't be tempted to write his view off too quickly before we examine the merit in it.
ya, i play woodwind (clarinet) but i could imagine that it's like weight lifting, and some people forget to breathe even though it doesn't have anything to do with the sound.
I wish they had a video of him playing the piece because I can play the cello, but I suck at reading music. I can read it once I've figured out the part, but I can't read the music and know what to play but the notes.
does it really matter if he is breathing during his performance. I would have never noticed it if he you did not point it out. You should really be listening to the instruction instead of something trivial... "He Should be able to keep tempo in other ways" Whatever who are you to say that? you have many years to go before you reach any sort of maturity in music and life

Hmm. I've heard hundreds of recordings where you can hear breathing. How about Glen Gould and singing even! Also having been in an orchestra for many years I often hear the woodwind/brass players breathing.

But yes, soft, in-tempo breathing is nessacary.
Kawazoekun 3 years ago
no one would hear those loud breathing in a concert, unless it's really really loud like an intake of a super car^^
MMX3SE 3 years ago
Yes, but in a instructional video he shouldn't intake air like a vacuum. :D

I never said anything about his playing.
He is WAY more talented then I am.
But I was just suggesting that breathing deeply is not a very good thing to do when your making an instructional video.
Just like when a violin player moves around when they play.
It's fine during practice and such but during a performance its unnessacary and sometimes distracting.
I have full respect for all music and musicians, being one myself, but I was just suggesting something I think. ;D
Kawazoekun 3 years ago
You will get it when as you progress in music^^ work hard
MMX3SE 3 years ago
Not just that.
None of the teachers I have had have ever done this.

Not once did she breath deeply as she played.
