I know this was almost 3 years ago but do you like or did like the silica sand? I am probably getting it for my 30 gallon freshwater tank but trying to figure out if it is a good decision or not :P
In hindsight I really didn't. It looked really nice and was super cheap. However it did nothing for the water quality and was so fine that it kept getting sucked in my filter. I currently have just gravel in my 30 gallon (still brackish) and it works well. The next tank I set up will have argonite sand in it and I'll post a video with comments on how that works out.
how hard is brackish water to take care of?? is it just a matter of adding a tablespoon of salt here and there or does it have to have a specific gravity like salt water?
Personally I think that brackish water is one of the easiest to take care of given the nature of brackish areas. Since fresh and salt water are always mixing the salinity varies a lot. Therefore brackish fish seem to hardier than other species. As far as the salt goes you have to use marine salt instead of freshwater aquarium salt (If you buy a big bag and tend to have a lower specific gravity the salt goes a long way).
First of all that song is awesome and secondly I actually had a different song originally but youtube decided I needed to change it. In retaliation I chose something random.
hey guys i got a green sailfin molly from this place called discount pets supplies and i got him and another cremecicle orange sailfn with this great deal they did 4 me ( cuz im a long time customer ) and they are great but mine all died a while back... but hey check out some of my vids ....
sorry to bother you again!!! but i just uploaded my first video of my fishtankso youcan see it. also how do i add music to my video because it doesnt have any noise. thanks!!!!! your welcome to comment. ill add one of my chiclid tank tomorrow.
well i have 3 fishtanks! one 28 gallon one with 2 angelfish, killifish like yours and algea eater. and my other one i have 3 african chiclids. and one more 20 gallon with lots of mollies. do you know if it will be alright if i put sand in all of them. also what actually happens to the filter the sand breaks it. thanks again sorry for the long response!!!!!!
I am not sure what the sand would do to the algae eater but I imagine it would not like it. For the cichlids, since they are the African vaiety it is a safe bet to say they would enjoy a high pH. On to the Mollies, none of my mollies dislike the sand and seem to love playing in it. So basically, beware on the algae eater, you may want to buy the pet store sand for the cichlids (or special cichlid sand), but it would prolly work for the mollies.
Thanks for replying!!!!! do you remember the name or the brand. because i want to change from gravel to sand, the sand in petstores is really expensive like 30 dollars for 20 pounds. also do you have any problems with the silica sand because i heard that it can bring brown algea to your fishtank. and it can take over and kill your fish.
I do not remember the exact brand but it was just the white silica sand that they had. The sand found in pet stores is usually an argonite sand which helps to keep the pH high which certain fish need. What do you have in there now? The brown algae rumor is true unfortunately but it can be easily maintained with regular water changes and a little scrubbing. So far I do not believe that I have lost a fish to it. The major bad thing I have found with sand is that it can ruin a filter head.
They were real. I had a hard time keeping them alive. As you see I am limited for space and could not open the hood (to give them extra light) because the crab liked to climb out. So they are all gone now(sigh) but you should look into ordering them. They added so much to my tank and now I do not know what to replace them with.
