@zorro822 I am assuming that you believe it is Damrau because of the video called "Diana Damrau at the Met" that has a picture of the costume and damrau's voice. While the singing on that video is indeed Damrau, the picture is not. The picture is of Erika Miklosa and if you search "erika miklosa der holle rache" here on youtube, the video that performance is from should be the second link. You will clearly see and hear that the performer is not Damrau.
I've heard most of these women live. One thing that is obscured here is vocal size. Sutherland and Deutekom sang Norma (heard 'em both). Damrau I heard as Marie last season. I big enough voice but not as big as their's. Popp's voice was also mid sized (Oscar in Vienna). The most famous high coloraturas of the period were probably Reri Grist and Kathleen Battle both of whom sang this high routinely but had quite small voices. Studer sings Aida.
I am not an opera-illuminated person, but I like it. My personal favorites so far are this aria (queen of the night) and Leoncavallo's vesti la giubba (pagliacci), specially with Mario de Monaco. In this video of 11 sopranos, I believe the best are (in order): 3. LUCIANA SERRA. 2. CRISTINA DEUKETOM (shame of recording quality), and 1. EDDA MOSER. I also think that SUMI JO has a nice voice, but, what's the hurry?... And ELENA MOSUC seems to have lost her high pitched notes. Thank you.
@tomasburi Commenting on rhythm and intonation is the provence of the dilettante; there is so much more to an operatic persona/performance than cheap observation. Perhaps you favor the RadioShack Casio keyboard rendition, since perfect intonation and timing is guaranteed.
@bigmandrel: Well... please tell me what should be admired on an operatic soprano singing Mozarts Queen, if every even tone is out of pitch and every odd tone out of rhythm? Moreover without proper dramatic voice, which is essencial for this aria... Sorry, but Mozarts arias requires perfection, not Jenkins-like approach.
@tomasburi Wow! A very civil response! I am inpressed, especially since I was a sarcastic asshole. I've nothing more to say on the matter. Maybe you will join my wife and I in a bottle of wine sometime. All the best.
By the way: of all the sopranos shown here, I believe that Dessay has the worst voice for the queen of the night. It just doesn't seem right to my ears.
I have to say that Damrau is the only one who is genuinely scary. Some of them treat it as a pretty exercise in scales, particularly Sumi Jo. I rate Edda Moser highly too. That Dessay recording is a painful to listen to as it must have been to perform. All I can hear is future vocal damage.
For me the most fascinating one of all is Cheryl Studer - this was a dramatic soprano (not a "tweety bird") who also had a fabulous technique. If only the career had been longer. Does anyone know where this clip comes from and when? Deutekom clip is from the Solti recording and excellent, but in the house (the Met, where I heard her) she did most of the coloratura with that annoying cackling technique.
@jlc10023 Deutekoms clip is live and in english, so how can it be from the Solti recording? Studers career was not longer then it was precisely because she did not have a fabulous technique. It was sincerely flawed for the broad repertoire she sang. If only she had adhered to her voice, a big lyric - nowhere near dramatic - her career might still have been been going...
Well, technically speaking, the Sumi Jo recording is by far the best. However, these are not the best recordings for a lot of these singers. Lucia Popp, for example, has a phenomenal recording, i think it's on youtube. Edda Moser must have been having an off day, because she is the most badass of all the singers on this list. And where o where did you dig up that Dessay recording? Maybe I haven't heard enough of her singing but she sounds like she ate a cow before she got on stage.
Damrau hands down though I thoroughly enjoy Moser, Popp, Sumi Jo and Mosuc for different reasons be it musicality or feeling or tone or whatever. But Diana just for the STUNNING nature of that particular performance. All these ladies sounded wonderful. It takes pipes to sing this aria!
listen to... i think, roberta peters or peers. amazing soprano. i think sumi jo was very good (technically) but she lacked the anger and fire for the QTN. i think moser was the best. everyone else was really good, but moser was just amazing.
one and only who sang that aria without any problems at all - was la Deutekom!
I totally agree, I first heard Queen of the night in my old CD called MOZART FAMOUSE ARIAS by DECCA, I was so impressed with Deutekom, I was comparing her with others. At the end, I realized that there is only one who could really do it naturally and that is Deutekom.
I like Moser, Pop, Damrau and Studer and also Serra seems to be good to me. But I'm missing Edita Gruberova in this list. Her performace is really great, too. And somewhat different to majority of these.
What is with some of these women speeding through this? I don't get it? Good God they saund like squealing pigs. Anyone who likes Serra had no musical training whatsoever. Damrau still gets it for me better than all the rest!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you listen carefully, Serra's voice is so different than all the others. She has a different timbre that is very pleasing to my ears when she gets on her high notes.
How can you say that when she sings her top Fs better than any of these others put together? Instead of it being a shrill squeak she has the ability to retain it with a haunting quality. And why is legato a good thing?! She's the Queen of the Night, not Pamina - she's not supposed to be tender. She's supposed to be evil and frightening, not sweet and tender.
And Sutherland's top notes are actually revolting.
Sumi Jo and Diana Damrau are clearly the most beautiful and adept at the coloratura passages. And Natalie Dessay is just awful at the C, F, G, and A quarter notes right before the high C's. Everyone else has either bad intonation, bad technique, bad breath, bad tone, or any combination of the above.
a ty ses mi nejakej chytrej......... :))) mam rad tyhle nazory, co vsechno vedej nejlip...... i ja mam sve favoritky, ale hlubokosklon pred vsemi damami...........

As far as Overall Package, Diana gets my vote because:
-Her voice fits the aria perfectly
-I love her musical interpretation
-She out-acts any soprano who does this aria.
That being said, I'm going to judge on the vocals in this video alone...
Damrau, Moser, & Deutekom are all tied for 1st.
With the exception of Serra, & Dessay [whom I didn't like] everyone else was good, but did something in the aria that I didn't like.

1. Damrau for balancing dramatic intent with stunning voice.
2. Moser - definitely dramatic, but not as mind-blowing as Damrau
3. Dessay and Popp for beautiful voices, but weak on dramatic integrity,
This was not Sutherland's role, she just owned pretty much everything else :)
Operaphile 3 years ago 3
Edda Moser wins this one
Quality of Voice:
1. Moser
2. Mosuc
3. Sumi Jo & Anderson
Technique:
1. Moser
2. Sierra
3. All EXCEPT Duetekom, Damrau, Sutherland. Those three had poor technique in my opinion b/c the breath was very noticable.
Duetkom was by far the worst.
