My sister was at her boyfriend's house for supper one day. As background, she is a lifeguard and has all the CPR/First Aid training. He got a rib stuck in his throat and started choking but she thought he was screwing around. He had to finally convince her that he actually couldn't breath before she would give him the heimlich, he was looking around for a chair to do it to himself haha

Okay, one of the first rules to first-aid is to decide to help, maybe no one wanted to help him *shrugs* and so many people aren't quite sure what to do if they encounter something like that. That doesn't neccessarily mean that other people aren't amazing, they were just a little flustered or decided to do a better thing than to give them a wrong heimlich. I've only been qualified in basic first-aid, so all I'm qualified to do is heimlich, CPR, and calling 911, basiclly :D

They changed the heimlic. You have to give the "abdominal thrusts" like the original but then you have to give "back blows". Prettymuch you pound your hand into the person's back. Then you alternate the abdominal thrusts and the back blows.

It's not called the Heimlich Maneuver anymore. They are called "Abdominal Thrusts". I guess there was a lot of legal issues between the Heimlich family and the Red Cross and people getting hurt/suing the family for the method causing damages.

Funny story: I was sitting at my desk watching the "HELP I'm CHOKING" Chia Lincoln video when I feel a sneeze coming on. I quickly grab a tissue to try to minimize the sneeze projectile and hold it just in front of my nose and mouth. Just as I am about to sneeze I had that quick inward breath and sucked the tissue right into my mouth an choked on it for a sec.

Despite my altruistic urge to help you Link, I'm pretty sure I'm legally obligated to help you since I am a trained and certified lifeguard. Professional rescuers usually don't end up on the news unless it was a really epic save or a small town or something. We sometimes get an applause but rarely a news interview. Even that, however, is still pretty awkward. At least it was for me. I wasn't sure how to respond especially since I really was just doing my job. What would y'all do?

@JeannaFace It changed a couple years ago. Technically it is still considered the Heimlich maneuver, but now the America Red Cross and the American Heart Association don't teach it anymore. They instead recommend you first try five back slaps, nice and hard, right between the shoulder blades, and then if those don't work, you are supposed to try five "abdominal thrusts." As far as I'm aware, the "abdominal thrusts" are relatively the same thing as the Heimlich maneuver.

LINK--What i have ALWAYS learned is , the rule is, your NOT suppose to preform CPR unless they are not breathing,.. CHOKING is totally different! IF your choking you will make a noise that sounds like a gurgling or raspy and NEEDS the Heimlich! I take the cpr classes every year or two and would NEVER NOT use it if i saw someone that needed it!! Everyone should at least take a class. I take it so much because i have kids and i want to always be prepared! :)
