This is wonderful. What a voice - what a song!! Sure he makes a few mistakes in his pitching but this is beautiful. Thanks for uploading.... I like BOYL too.
Yeah, these happen to be very bad performances. The main problem is that he's playing inappropriate transpositions, and that he appears to be somewhat less than well-prepared. He should have determined his comfortable vocal range and adjusted the songs accordingly. His main bag has always been writing 'em, though, not singing 'em. He's a really nice guy, and his songs are good, so we should forgive him.
Yes, I agree to a point. J.D. is not 25 years old anymore. All he has is two mics, no mixing or effects, a buzzing guitar on the C-chord. Stripped down performance. He sounds like he would rather be singing harmony. His work stands on it's own. Here it is folks, This is not a full band performance.

The only song I ever new was "Only Lonely",Now that I have listened to a few more on here,I find it very hard to believe what all the fuss is about,He is plane boring and lifeless in his music.
It was a dream: coming from San Sebastian (Spain) and I end up meeting him at rehearsals: he was just nice and simple, and a lot of fun. So I took a step forward and ask for an impossible: "Would you please play "Baby Come Home"? "Sure", was the answer. "Home By Dawn" was the first J.D. record I bought when it came out in ´84: had to cross the border to St Jean de Luz (Tilbury was the record store) to buy it... I was 13... Peace&Love for all
I was at that particular London show in October of last year. Unfortunately, the new album (announced for March 08) is still not out - the 4-track teaser EP 'Possible Weather' has a very jazzy appeal to it, and is - like this show - just plain gorgeous. Thanks to the uploader! (I don't mind the flickering you mention - if you got more from this, please do post it). JD rules!
Thanks again Paul this clip is superb and i hope you have more for sharing of this great singer-songwriter as soon as you can! let me tell you I used to live in New york in the late 80's and a one day in the summer of 88'- i think a saturday- i've got a Jackson Browne autograph in flushing medows of central park and ask him for J.D., he answered me he was on tour with Glen around the U.S. that time.keep on touch..
J.D. where are your trademark beard? do like Willie Nelson ,Kristofferson and Don Williams and don't let your images consultory change your face.Yes i know Fogelberg did it in the eighties but he was in his thirties but a man in the fifties look better with beard, even more if his entire career was wearing this great red beard.thanks a lot for posting.
Hi, x... Thanks for finding the clip, and taking the time to write a message. I shot this amazing concert, and I am here to tell you that JD was rocking that look. In person he's got a kind of quiet, super-confident air about him - he was wearing an immculate dark bespoke (HAD to be hand-made) suit, and looked like Clint Eastwood would LIKE to look; like a US Marshall all duded up for a wedding... if you liked the clip, please pass it on!
One of the greatest songwriters of all time, a man of considerable talent, probably better than frey and henley. Lets hope J.D.Souther graces our shores to a tour in 2008. Maybe with inflation the eagles may freeze over?
I love it when he's talking about BEST OF MY LOVE and says, 'you wont have to pay $300 and walk 2 miles to your car." I love the Eagles, but their concerts are WAYYY overpriced, at least IMO.
yep, that's JD. He got rid of the scraggly hair and the moustache and beard a long time ago - at least around the time his pals axed Don Felder from their band. Felder recounts being surprised at Souther's appearance at the last Frey B'Day he attended.
Hi, Wellypet... Please see above for further comment on this subject. I was there, and it's definitely JD. You might also like to know that the Eagles (at London's O2 on Saturday night) have ALL taken a leaf from JD's copy of GQ... and the Reservois Dogs thing looked pretty damn good on them, too. Beach Boys, please take note!
Considering you have good musical taste , why do you have to resort to ageism, and previous girlfriends, without revealing your age and sexuality. Do you have any problems?
I still love him. J. D. your a major part of our music in this century. You've touched the Eagles, James Taylor, Ritchie Furay, and a number of my other heros. Bless his heart. Marc Trainor.
Will someone please transcribe for me what he said between the songs, from "Did someone just say" to the "caricature of myself" line?
Go Ahead And Rain got my attention back in 1984 and I can say I love almost all of his songs! More footage of this concert would be appreciated. Black and White is just fine.
He says something like: "Did you just say, 'Take a picture of him grimmacing?' (laughter) ... The caption is gonna read 'Service Engine Soon' (laughter)... So glad I didn't let you down (laughter)...I'm gonna wake up (and get) on my e-mail and here I'm gonna be...a knarled caricature of myself trying to tune my guitar!" He is very funny.
was a great gig.... he really was something special... very nice guy too... hope to meet him again... sorry bout the lighting effect couldn't see it whilst i was recording.. hope we can do it again sometime
Hey, MJ, that wasn't what I meant at all!! Please don't apologise! I didn't mean that you SHOULDN'T have found it. I was just amazed that you had, is all...
The Roy Orbison thing was exactly what I was going for, by the way. Well done for making the connection. And it was one hell of a show, wasn't it? I was just astonished through large parts of it, having been unfamiliar with Mr Souther's work until very recently.
I AM familiar with JD's work and his show was truely amazing to me too. I had been waiting for a long time to see him play life and this concert exceeded all my expectations.
Hi, MJ. How did you FIND this? It's really only here so that JD's record company and PR people can look at the problem we had with the lighting that night: I've done everything I can think of to get rid of the constant flicker, which seriously mars some otherwise superb footage. (THAT's why it's in black & white, by the way. Unfortunately, even this didn't get rid of the flickering... dammit.)
I miss this song...I got it on vinyl but I don't have a turntable now...such a shame

Pitch is a little shaky there, JD. Not a great performance by any stretch.

Wow, this is amazing...that his voice is still so cool and all he needs is a guitar...not lights, not band, no frills....just all J.D. naturelle.
Thanx

Hi Paul,
A friend just send me this link and the only thing I did was click on it. Sorry.
I hope you'll find a solution to this problem.
for the record I really like it. It kind of reminded me of the Roy Orbison's Black and white night. Sorry again
