Instead of recasting and then killing off Natalie, AMC should have written her off the show when Kate Collins left in 1992 until such time that she was ready to return. AMC wrecked the character which they have a habit of doing when they recast. Natalie was written as so weak and dumb after Melody Anderson took over. After Collins left, AMC apparently thought they'd fool viewers for a few weeks by having Anderson appear with those big eye patches over her face, but the difference was obvious.
Well, there was a lot of politics in Kate Collins leaving the show (if you don't know about the reasons, e-mail me and I'll tell you). I don't blame Melody Anderson because NO ONE could replace Kate Collins - no one.
You're right. No one could replace KC, but it's a mystery why AMC didn't get that. I think I know about the politics that led to KC's exit. I don't blame MA either. She walked into a no-win situation because AMC had apparently decided to change Natalie into a dumb weakling after KC left. When MA was still wearing the big eye patches, it was evident that the writers were changing the character of Natalie when she said "I wish I was dead." There's no way the Natalie we knew would've said that.
That guy in the headband cracks me up.
The Pat/Natalie scene is excellent. I never knew Pat had a role on the show beyond being Angie's mother.

TPTB really blew it when they killed Natalie off in '93 (though she did come back as an angel a number of times).
