I am a Bowie fan of 30 year and this is one of the best songs ever.I am also a smiths/ morrissey fan of 20+ years but this cover does nothing for me. I want to shout " BUDDY " that word should be sang with passion not flat like moz sings it
morrissey starts the song in earnest, then realises it,s not working, then throws the song away. maybe it,s his attempt at an apology to bowie, frankly I don,t think bowie gives morrissey a second thought. I find it unthinkable to compare them, artistically or otherwise.
At 2:38 in this song, doesn't he sing, "...You don't really like this song, do you? Do you?" I'm a Bowie devotee going back to the early 70's, and have loved Morrissey and The Smiths since the 80's. He sounded lackluster and bored. I think his effort fell short when considering how talented he is.
Lovely cover, in my opinion. Genuine affection for Bowie - and Mick Ronson. Ronson had terminal liver cancer when he produced "Your Arsenal" - the album that put Morrissey back on top!!! Morrissey completely broken up when he was told Mick died.
Morrissey does a FANTASTIC cover here. Bowie wrote the song, Mick Ronson - that beautiful Spider from Mars - produced Morrissey's comeback, "Your Arsenal" and shatteringly, died soon after from liver cancer. RIP Mick.
Fantasic cover! I was searching for Bowie doing this but discovered this treasure...it does justice to Bowie but still manages to sound like Morrisey/The Smiths...excellent.
Mind you, it helps if you appreciate both artists...
Of course, but Morrissey can be a bit funny about anyone who isn't The Dolls! I've heard him be sniffy about Bowie before, but the whole androgynous thing was obviously influenced by Bowie.
i don't really understand the negative comments......this is a great performance because you can see how much morrissey is enjoying himself and singing from his heart....it's beautiful
great song massacred, some might say, by a great artist.....incidentally, did I spell massacred right. by the way, i thought I hated Morissey until he raised his profile recently.
dear eccentric: yes you spelt 'massacred' correctly, but - sadly - not 'Morrissey'. must be a crash-course for the ravers - or a date with a spell-check
This is great - I don't understand all this apples V oranges stuff though. People who are obsessed with who's version is best are trainspotters - and the personal stuff, as if their work was good or bad depending on whether they were nice or not nice people. Anyway love to see Morrissey doing Bowie - sorry that sounds rude!
Yeah, I don't know a lot about Moz but from his interviews you can tell there are many issues with him. Depression is a horrible thing. I just don't get way he had to get his panties in a wad over Bowie's idea to come out at the end of Moz's set, play a couple of tune together and then fade Moz out into Bowie's band. I saw the NIN half of the tour and it was very cool. I don't remember Trent throwing a hissy over the idea. And he's a moody thing, too. It was a ego problem on Moz's part.
I am a Bowie fan-not a Morrissey fan but I think it's a good cover. Not better than Bowie but not bad and done with a nod and a wink. I just thought Morrissey showed truly bad form on the Outside Tour by bowing out and then bashing Bowie out in public. It was shameful and unbecoming. He threw insults saying Bowie hadn't done anything interesting since the '74-Then WHY in THE hell was he going on tour with him in the '90's?
From what I heard Moz was in a very bad way... I heard he was going through one of the worst depressive periods in his adult life... I think it was a Linder Sterling interview but I am not sure. Not trying to make excuses but it might help to know that.
@suparni I listen to them both but may be a little partial to Morrissey. I agree w/ you on the cover, he did a respectable job but bowie's is definitive.
I don't really like when he gets like that either, but that's just his style - bowie wasn't the first or last target he's taken aim at. that said, morrissey has made some of the best music ever recorded and still seems like a kind, caring human being & his nastiness strikes me a a bit tongue-in-cheek anyway.
Nothing interesting since 74? Haha . I dont think so. Diamond Dogs-Lets Dance was a SICK ERA! Maybe even the MOST interesting...... Yea, he fell off for awhile but stuff from the late 90's, Heathen, and Reality arent bad at all either!
hmmm..intresting how insecure you are about this , that you have to rise to a simple comment about how i prefer Moz over Bowie, with the words 'Fuck off' very clever off you. very intresting argument.
Again you baffle me, at what point is it about being hip, its about feeling, and about how a musician speaks to you.
I was stating a preference and you jump, its quite funny. Maby you should grow up. And take music as you see it now how others do.
Bowie on the whole does not speek to me, and will never mean anything to me, however i do like this song. But simply prefer Moz's rendition of it. To me Bowie nor anyone else will ever hold a candle to Morrissey.
speight1989 - I like this version, but better than Bowie? - I don't think so. The writer of a song has a better understanding of all innuendos etc. of his/her work, & it's very difficult to get inside an early 1970's David Bowie head. Morrissey while delivering a good version of this song hasn't been able to do this at all. This is why The Smiths are also so good.
you are probably right friend, but to me Moz is everything, and i don't really get Bowie, i just carnt seem to enter his world. Its a good song, I just like the Moz version.
I loved Morrissey in the Smiths, unfortunately never got to see them live. I did get to see him live solo, and was very disappointed. I thought his performance was quite a bit selfish. He didn't play very long at all. One of the worst concerts I've ever been to. Just a bad experience that totally changed my opinion of him. He might as well have called it quits when the Smiths broke up. If you are going to tour, give your fans a great show.
this kind of sucked. first he just sang it without really paying attention to the lyrics and what they were saying. second he was wandering all over the place (does he always do that?) he also changed the lyrics which is fine if they really fit well. he could do much to make the audience find the song interesting if he performed it more like an actor doing a piece. many of bowies best songs are more suited to that approach.
I love Morrissey and I love Bowie, they are totally different artists. I don't think that the delivery is flat, I think that it is Morrissey's style, plus the fact that it is the end of the gig and he was probably knackered. I do like it, but then I really love this song.
Lulu covered The Man who sold the World - now that was a cover that was total torture!

such trash!. morrissey can't sing this at all and that guitar part is awful. sorry morrissey, the smiths-the smiths may be one of the greatest albums ever but i'll stick to david's version for my rock and roll thrills.
perhaps you feel that way - but i genuinely love his solo work and i might even choose to keep it over the smiths stuff if i had to choose... I wouldn't say Bowie is too much for Moz. No way.
All the post-punk, new wave and british pop bands, all of them were highly inspired by the Bowie's 70's work. That's why he is covering this incredible song. Just remember the glamour, ambiguity, esthetics, darkness, punk riffs and atittude of Ziggy & The Thin White Duke, all years before of bands such like Bauhaus, Smiths, The Damned, OMD, Devo... you must know all of them. And excuse me, but to me his solo work is boring, he couldn't go far than The Smiths, no without Johnny Marr.
To answer Morrissey's question, I count ALOT of mistakes in the first few lines hehe.
Apparently their fall out came after Bowie wanted to "intrude" on morrissey's set for a couple of duets at the end when he supported on the 1995 Outside tour.
Morrissey saw this as an invasion on his goodbye time with the audience and left the tour so far as I understand.
As much as I love Morrissey he needs to not be so defensive. Bowie's very personable and would probably get shot out of a canon if he could, Moz is the exact opposite and that must be respected but even so... >_< they're both a piece of work, together is only inviting disaster! OMG!

Wow, coming from his lips Morrissey totally commandeered 'Drive in Saturday'. It sounds more like Morrissey than Bowie now, to me it IS Morrissey's. <3

Nice, after hearing so many times the audio of this song from this concert, to see the video after all this time. Nice!
