  • I agree. I could never ascertain a consistent method for identifying fingers....a basic thing to do when making a film. You can figure it out but it is largely a waste of time when you can watch a decently planned "instructional" video

  • what the fuck are "p" "m" and "i"????? i've been playing guitar for a while and i've never heard those terms.....

"pointer" , "middle" , and "index" is the only thing i can think of but it doesn't even make sense cause pointer and index are the same finger.......i'd be able to figure it out but the guys small strings are so thin i can't see them vibrating on that close up angle...

  • @123guitartom123 P I M A C is a common abbreviation used for fingerpicking. Pulgar - thumb. Index - index finger. Middle - middle finger. Annular - ring finger. C - not sure on the name for this, but it's the little finger.

  • Nice lesson. I have learned a lot from this and am able to put what I have learned into practice. Thanks! Kind Regards

  • Thank you... Finally, a great lesson for starting blues guitarist, breaking down what the right hand does first was/is key for me, as I had no idea how to get that rhythm until you did this lesson. I can only imagine that for many blues veterans that this seems trivial, but not if your just starting..

Thanks again, I am a better guitar player today as a result of your lesson.

  • just bite your left hand nails

  • Love the Webber!!!

  • This video have been very helpful. I used this video on my website fingerstyleguitaronline com

  • you suck

  • oh man he was strugling they mst of had fun set him up for this 1

  • to the nail biters. playing with your finger tip is just fine. you have to remember that the finger nail is like having a plectrum(it makes your sound more audible). play however you like and remember there are no rules and just KEEP ON PLAYING. CHEERS!

  • I'm teaching myself how to play, and I never use the pick. Is this a bad habit to be getting into?

  • @TheGhostsSoul .it all depends on what kind of music youre wanting to play. if your wanting to play crazy guitar leads then you might want to use a pick, but if your wanting to play fingerstyle like in the video then you obviously don't need one. Most of the time when im strumming songs i don't use a pick by preference. my advice to you is do whats comfortable, you can't go wrong! as you progress you'll be able to use one regardless of whether you used one while learning, it's not a bad habit.

  • guy looks like john lynch

  • A good, useful lesson. Thanks.

  • It's a good video, but you look REALLY nervous. Relax lol.

  • you're blatantly a classical player

  • you need to plant A as you have double jointed thumbs which means you have limited extension of A. But you can have faster tremolo picking with a pick if you bend your thumb up.

  • Great instruction!

  • P I M A C are abbreviations for the Spanish names for the fingers. If you really want to know what you're playing on guitar then you would learn the theory too.

  • @Jonathan31639 wow you can read wikipedia, now get over yourself

  • being a intermediate player at best I found this very useful and informative.like the right hand exercises a lot.feel fortunate to have such a knowledgeable articulate player break all this down and not come off as know it all or show boat like so many of these vids can be.Thanks

  • not very useful. just go straight into the riff. first three minutes aren't useful to anyone.

I, M, A, P.... I take this to be Index, Middle and Pinky... I'd call A R instead, for ring finger.

  • @cluelocker P actually means "pulgar" or more commonly know as your thumb. this nomenclature is taken from the classical guitar method of right hand finger picking. for finger picking it actually is very useful to follow because it teaches you economy of movement in your rhythm hand. tyler explains this briefly in the video but there is a lot more skill and discipline that goes into it than you would think.

it would make more sense to call a r but thats just the way it is bro.

  • @dgester thanks for the detailed explanation

  • It's sounds kinda like robert johnson. he's just not doing the fills and leads that johnson does. i mean...he could be the rhythm guitarist in a johnson cover band. there could be guest appearances by clapton and keb' mo'...HAAAAAH!!!!!!! LOLZ this dude looks like a more awkward topher grace.

  • This is more like piedmont blues. Robert Johnson? I think not.

  • @rickyfalcon (9:00) part of crossroads song

  • this sounds nothing like Robert Johnson

  • great lesson

  • Great Lesson ! Bite size chunks work great ! Thanks a bunch :)

  • more then great hair

  • we cant go to the next level and achieve next level guitarism with all these noob vids

  • is that a webber guitar?

  • anyone a idea what guitart that is?

  • ok just get to good stuff fuck!

  • Really nice finger pattern, I got it down quite quick but I have to look at the video every time because I keep forgetting the timing.

I think I have it now.

  • he always looks like hes about to start lauging

  • what is this P and I and M stuff what dose that mean

  • @gageman70 pointer, index, middle. not sure i just guessed lol. sounds right tho :p

  • @gageman70 P = Thumb, I = Index finger, M = Middle finger.

The P came the latin word pulgar.

  • Dstrings slightly out of tune

  • is his hair a6ctually part of his head

  • You look a bit like Rachel Weisz:D (or she looks like you:)

  • @wojtekmetal wow... I agree :D

  • @wojtekmetal now that u say it.... yess

  • up until like 8:20 it wasn't very much like robert johnson's style...

  • Comment removed

  • P is thumb, I is index (pointer), M is Middle and A is your ring finger.

  • damit dude why dont you just say the name of the strings, i get i, m, and a, but wtf is p? are there tabs for this lesson on the website?

  • I think that those are finger names. p - pointer, m - middle, and so on

  • check oy my vid couple lick improvised

  • very helpful

  • this guy is so happy to teach..and he is thinking of his beautiful wife..

    awesome useful lesson..

  • Not very enticing song but very clear, precise, and well explained.

    Congratulations

    (Valencia).

  • I think Tyler gives some of the best lessons on NextLevelGuitar.

  • i agree, but the two fist mcgee guy though is a lot more entertaining

  • cool

  • so cool

  • this example sounds terrible... but the lesson is usefull ! thanks !

  • excelnt bro, good lesson, saludos desde venezuela

  • hes fine imho, good lesson likeable persona

  • gah i wish i could go a week without biting my nails off lol. great vid.

  • @EuphoriaMusicSession you don't need nails, or those stupid thumb picks.

  • @ams914 agreed about the thumb picks, but if you have fingernails it creates more of a percussive sound. so technically you don't need them, but it's good to have them.

  • @EuphoriaMusicSession haha same here

  • @EuphoriaMusicSession Me too, i cant stop biting them, i tell myself not to and next thing i know they are gone.

  • He is looking at me omg... :O Stop looking at this camera .. it's FREEZING

  • This guy is obviously a good guitarist but he looks VERY uncomfortable in front of the camera.

I understood what he was trying to teach (just) but a lesson like this will confuse the beginner/novice tbh.

  • he looks pretty comfortable to me maybe you are just hypersensitive

  • i see what you mean.

  • Awesome lesson.

  • Michiganman what the f*** are you on about. The title includes the names "Robert Johnson" and "Eric Clapton" so what made you think it would be a breeze to learn.

If you want simple beginners guitar lessons try searching for "simple beginners guitar lessons" or at least something with "beginner" in the title.

  • Great lesson, been wanting to learn this properly for a long time!

  • well this certainly isn't a beginner's lesson. Most beginners don't understand the concept of scales and swing rhythm. So no matter how he taught this it would be a bit dry. But he is quite a good teacher at exposing complex techniques in a manageable manner

  • yeah man what ever happened to marty? hahah

  • he has his own channel.. xD guitarjamzdontcom

  • apparently, you don't know what you're doing, tupark82.

  • another one?? now what are YOU talking about? lol what are you responding to? hopefully u'r not responding to the last thing i said cuz if it is, then read more carefully before you get moded

  • First off, unless if you're incredibly naive, you have to know that when you post here, you open yourself to everyone to chime in. If you want to have a conversation with one person, send them a personal message. Second, you've removed the comment I responded to, so obviously, even you don't agree with you.

  • Well I'm sorry you find it offensive, but I assure, as a man who almost exclusively play with his fingers, they're necessary. I do agree they don't need to be centimeter, but neither his nor mine come close to that.

  • fair enough. i play too so i'll have to see for myself just how much more effective long finger nails will be

  • Good luck with that, brother.

  • guitar is supposed to be fun, this is too much like school.

  • lol you just gotta learn it for it to be fun

  • my earlier post was meant to be read in the spirit of Butthead......hhahaaa!

  • classical to clapton... this guy is great

  • wtf? lmao loser randomly jumping in on a convo. someone called me a name so i responded appropriately. now fuck off and go make better use of your time

  • great is interesting this!

  • Why are the three chords called 1st 4th and 5th, why not 1 2 and 3? And what makes it in the key of A, is it because the first chord is an A?

    It doesn't make any sense.

  • number corresponds to the note within that key, ie A being the 1st note in the key of A, D being 4th note, E being 5th

tons of vids on these basics

  • In the key of A, the A chord is the 1 chord, the D chord is 4, and E is the 5. They have to do with where along the a major scale they fall. We use numbers to denote them to make transposing easy. So if you know a song in one key, you can easily play it in another.

  • it obviously helps him and he obviously knows what he's doing. He is the one teaching of course.

  • thats for playing guitar man, he's a classical player so its like having picks on your hands

  • he uses them for fingerstyle jackass.

  • Please what is the name of that acoustic guitar!?

    Thanks :)

  • Fingerstyle is awesome... Thank you sir!

  • i hate being a metal player XD

it makes doing any otherr good genre about a million times harder

    but i nailed it

after an hour of coordinating my fingers differently

love the bluesy chords as well :)

  • Why do you call yourself a metal player and not simply a guitar player?

  • i was simply reffering to my main genre

i'm a technical metal guitarist these days

but i'm like a novice at most other genres

sorry to cause any confusion :)

  • Thanks for clearing that up.

  • i know how you feel, im exactly the same lol

  • @mattonalog yeah i understand i also play metal its especialy harder having to slow down and using no pick cuz usually i play around 200 bpm so im really slowin down but atleast this is a challenge

  • @mattonalog ya i agree...the shift from hard rock/metal to blues and jazz is rather difficult. but once you have both down you've become a much better player

  • @mattonalog learning fingerstyle guitar will make you a far better metal player.

The Metallica guys are excellent classical guitar players

  • @mattonalog same thing here, i can play heavy fast complicated metal riff but when it come to this i look like i don't even know what's a guitar

  • @mattonalog good thing to do, start adding them to ur metal playing :D that would be cool , bluesy metal :D

  • @Hacker2090 someone did that. his name is jimmy page.

  • @ryanchappel1 i see , very nice

  • use your thumb for the d7 (its actually a d7/f#) and also if you have nails!? wtf

  • if you have nails!?

  • Nice lesson, but hes reading too much. Hes not looking into the camera but above it. It's just werid seeing that. Besides that, thx for the lesson.

  • 10:17 I'm driftin' and driftin'....

  • nice lesson but i dont use fingerstyle alot

  • nice
