I like this cover, because it's done in the way Kris wrote the song, but no-one's ever done it with these feelings and emotions as good as Kris himself...
Does an body have this with the piano track? The single that I bought in 1970 had it; it really enhanced the whole thing. I lost (melted) mine and haven't been able to find it in 40 years of looking.
@zendishwasher2 gordo didnt write it but he did the first recorded version of this song suprisngly he started as a jazz pianist then a jingle writter then switched to folk music
@shakeypitt I dont know when that exactly was but the source is an article on gordon lightfoot which was not on the internet there are a lot of mistatements of fact on the internet
I've always liked this version. That line: 'With those windshield wipers slapping time, and Bobby clapping hands, we finally sung up every song that driver knew' - has a wonderful rhythm and rhyme (especially 'time' with 'fin....') and flow. Wish I'd written a line like that! Well done KK.
BEAUTIFUL!! I'm not very keen on Gordon Lightfoot but I fell in love with his rendition - it's a gem. It has all the right sadness Janis lacked in her recording. After hearing this now I wonder whether she even understood the song.
Lightfoot could take any song and make it a sound like a Lightfoot song, just as Waylon Jennings did, a voice that never changed for the song but took the song to the voice.
Gordon Lightfoot was my all time favourite singer/ songwriter at a time when there were so many great talents. I've listened to several versions of this and to me this is still the BEST. Great to know, too, that Gordon is still singing and honoured in his native Canada. An awesome talent!
This is a pretty good cover of an excellent Kris Kristofferson song. Janis Joplin screamed her way through it in a deep haze - in much the same way she did everything else. My favourite version of this was sung by Charlie Pride.
@johnjohnmajortom i know i've heard janis joplin and kris kristofferson sing this. i love the tapping, snapping on this version. it has a good, faster beat too.
This is my favorite version... and I heard it before Janis Joplin re-invented the song... I love Janis but I prefer this version by 1000x... the pain & regret of the lyrics seems so much stronger in this understated vocal...
@vootie99 I completely agree. Although I love the Janis version, there will never another version like this one. It is the first version I ever heard, and it is when I fell in love with the song. Love this version the most.

@shakeypitt It would appear that Lightfoot didn't like the piano track! That's probably why I can't find it any more.
