Well it is a difficult question to answer without proper evidence, but we can only guess. I think that initially God gave us free will. He doesn't control our life. But he will aid us if we pray to Him. I think in terms of the 6 days of creation, we're living in a 7th day, when God is not interfering. (I don't believe 6 days of creation are 24 hour periods. I believe they are millions of years long).
