Good pay? Bull crap. Man o' War ships paid their sailors half of what a merchant ship paid. Man, press gangs suck. :p At the peak of press gangs, they stopped persuading. Eventually they just started knocking out random men and dragging them on board. That would suck so bad....
So many shanties have those memorable, haunting tunes; maybe the hard and often short life on a sailing ship bred musical inspiration. For good novels of Nelson's navy, see Alexander Kent. Many thanks again for posting these superb renditions, and the videos to go with them. .
Very good music and excellent anime, the only negitive comment i have is boatswain is spelled wrong, it's bosun or bos'n. but besides that excellent work
lol. Not too hard to find. I was afraid it was an actual hymn as opposed to a song title. Well done for including actual titles and artists in your videos. Love it when songs are identified ^ ^
i notice in thise fanfiction its Riku whos the one dealing out the flogging and yet in another fanfiction Riku was the one being flogged seems the tables have turned for Riku
Such a beautiful song. I love your illustrations. What might at first seem a bit of an odd and anachronistic choice, depicting 18th/19th century sailors as anime characters, is quickly overcome by your skill in portraying them, so what comes across is the emotion rather than, say, the hair styles, at odds with the time period. It makes for a relate-able, like-able video. My question now is...where the devil did you get the idea to combine the two? Fantastically done.
This video reminds me of one of Julian Stockwin´s novels too. This time it´s the 1st one. Thomas Paine Kydd, an ordinary citizen met a press gang and got on board of the HMS Duke William, ab real big ship of the line. They flogged him too, but he learned quick and became a great sailor at last...
I know my previous remark will most likely anger some. I'm sorry, but history "always" repeats itself......Anyway, it's very of hard to picture Goten, Edward, Naruto, and Sasuke as such mean sob's. They're definitely out of character for this important lesson in history.
It should be noted that all Ocean Going Nations did this sort of atrocity. Including the U.S...... Not unlike modern military recruiters of today, bandying peaches and creme stories around to vulnerable high school kids. And it's been proven that there are those elements at the proving grounds. That partake in violent hazings just as crews of man of war of years past would do like we just saw. Some things never change...... Anyway, thank you for saluting Mariners of all nations and cultures!!
Safe to say "All Mariners" of the old days and many from less fortunate countries to this day still have a damned hard life. Out here on the West Coast of the US. We were known as the "Shanghai Capital" of the world. If you were smart back in the old old days. You stayed away from the port districts of San Francisco, Oakland, Portland, Seattle, Tacoma, Astoria, and San Pedro. Lest you walk into a tavern looking for a drink of whiskey and wake up in the brig of a ship on your way to China.
Apologises again. Was feeling a little pissy when I posted, so forgive the bad sentiments I wrote.
The meat of my statements still stands. Though it was technically possible to volunteer for the RN of the period, anyone with an ounce of sense... didnt. And as they (the Press Gang) had the power to 'impress' anyone they wanted they didnt need the Kings Shilling trick...
Whilst i appreciate your right to dissagree, im really sorry but this is my job and I think I know alot about it, the Navy did recruit in the manner I stated, yes, more often they merely hit you over the head and dragged you off, but more often than people give credit for they tried to promote you into going, and the army did not use the same shilling trick, they tended to hold massive parades, telling all the grand life in the army, or took men who would be prisoners.
well then what made england think they had the right to stop American cargo ships and seize crew memebers? if we did that we would have had the whole brit navy on us so just beause there brit its ok?
They did it because they were desperate for seamen in their fight against Napolean. They claimed the right to seek out British deserters and seamen of British nationality who sought haven on American ships where the pay and treatment were a lot better.
They didn't get into why it was done but just illustrated how cruel the treatment was on board British men-of-war during wartime. Captains had life and death authority over the crew.
i lovew this shantie, but u should hear it in Polish, especially when i ing it with my friend. but the polish version is really nice. whoever likes shanties should listen to it
Sigh. As you dont know the history of your profession, yes. Kissing the kings shilling is an army recruiting tradition seeing as how the British army recruitment was 'voluntary'. The Royal Navy used the Press Gang which was anything but... They took you. You served. Next... Unpleasant but true.
So if you are ever in a British pub and you see a man checking the bottom of his pint glass before he drinks it, you will know he is a merchant sailor.
NO. Thats how the British Army recruiting sergeants operated. The Naval Press Gang did not have even the slightest hint of 'volunteerism'. They just took you.
Also, the British army recruited with drums and posters and a big show, as well as recruiting criminals, but the Navy also recruited in the manner which i mentioned.
In fact, the glass bottom in a british tankard or pint glass is to check for a penny in the bottom, in the old days if you were a sailor in the pub and a naval officer bought u a drink he would put a gold crown in the bottom, when we had wooden tankards you could not see it till u had finished drinking then it was too late. Once you had drunk down to the kings crown you were dragged off to the navy. Me and my mates still check our pints for coins before we drink them, just in case lol.
One of the worst parts of British history was the press gang. Our fleet and empire was so vast we had to force men in, our army was the same, made up of criminals who were given the choice between prison or the army, lol, im a Merchant Navy Officer and every time I leave the pub I think how bad it would be if the Navy jumped me and put me on a Man O War, cos back in the day, all merchant seafarers had that problem.
Sailors were only flogged if they disobeyed orders. They were also flogged when they first enlisted. This was so they could "taste the lash" and would not disobey their superiors. Life on board a 19th century man o` war was tough.
Another good one. Like the artwork as usual, but I also like how real you are about it. You convey the message of both the harsh things sailing had in it, but also some of the joys. (In your vids I mean) And it's well put together.
I'd like to know why they whipped him! He;s looked terribly sad... and like a girl... is that why they whipped him? No seriously, I just want to know. I LOVE IT! (work on perportions!)
You might say that the crew made a harsh christening. No doubt Athrun might have performed some sort of minor offense or misconduct. But Vegeta, being the captain of the ship, is a hard taskmaster. The slightest sign of insubordination or misconduct and he gives the maximum punishment.

great song anyway ^_^

That's because its an old song. Like, when there were Man o' Wars on the ocean.
SteampunkRaven 2 years ago 2
The actual word used is 'man-of-war', meaning a kind of warship.
I guess it's just that the singer doesn't pronounce it too precise.
AmeNoOrchestra69 2 years ago
yeah, for sure, but here it is Man o' war. but well, I guess that's pretty much the thing the band had in mind when chosing their name XD
