...I read that simplifying radicals in a/b form began long before the days of calculators, hence it was quikcly noted that it is way, way easier to divide a quantity by 2 than by 1.414... (its square root), so squaring that gawky \/2 denominator transformed it into a nice, neat, crisp, familiar 2.

This is helpful, but why can't you do more complex problems? I have the radical of 3 divided by 3 and the radical of 12, it looks like hyroglyphics to me when the examples aren't similar at least in that way.

(1÷1.4142135....) That would be REALLY HARD to to by hand!!! But you can simplify it by expressing it as (√2)/2.

Well, try learning from a teacher that doesn't want to teach you. I've had one teacher like that. He hated me, (it was obvious) and whenever I asked for help, he would tell me to pay attention in class. I WAS paying attention. Math is just my weak subject and I learn better 1 on 1. He would call me a loser (no joke). Funny thing is, a year later, I joined the chess club, and figured out HE was the leader. I challenged him in chess, and I was the first student to ever beat him. Revenge is sweet.
