I sure remember when these old E Units were new during my younger years with Santa Fe Railway, and they were a big change from the Steamers. A great looking locomotive.
I am sorry, but the UP should have had the heritage unit be an original SP locomotive in the red and black paint job with it's original SP number, to me, that locomotive is just UP 1996, not anything else. RIP SP.
There should be a heritage unit for Chessie System, Southern, N&W, Illinois Central, L&N, Conrail. BNSF should do the same thing with GN, NP, SP&S, CBQ, SLSF and Santa Fe. CN and CP should do the same as well. I know I'm probably asking for a lot. I don't necessarily expect they do it all at once, but it would still be excellent if it were to come to fruition.
I'm glad you agree, and I also wish that they would build new freight cars or repaint some freight cars of the fallen flag lines, and make it like a subsidiary line, like the CN has the IC and the SP had the SSW & DRGW.
This is what I like about the Union Pacific, is that they create heritage units like this one and the DRGW herritage and the KCS to perserve history of railroads that they have taken over. Unlike BNSF that hasn't made a herritage unit for Santa Fe yet. Plus the UP still does steam operations and that is a plus in my book.
I love the fact that they restored the old side to side headlight instead of eliminating it the way most always do. I was never a big U.P. fan but I must say Very well done!
too bad UP 1996 did'nt get the full SP light package and a Nathan P-3

I'd like to see KCS do a Texas Mexican Railway Heritage locomotive. I miss
seeing the green locomotives with the
orange stripes rolling through South
Texas.
