Aretha has regained a lot of her range, although her voice isn't as powerful in the upper ranges like it once was. Her rendition of "Respect" was solid.

I grew up in the 80s & she was our Queen of Soul & still is. All my nannys, mum & aunties could sing But they always said that no-one could sing from the heart & soul like Aretha could. They would say you can always tell the difference with singers who were blessed and gifted by God compared to those who were trained, you can just feel it... Good Times!!

I love and respect Aretha's legendary legacy as well as anyone else; but I am sorry to say this new release just doesn't cut it -- at least not for me anyway. Her rendition of RESPECT was much better. Nevertheless, I do believe there is a time and season for all things, and feel entertainers should quit while they are still ahead. I feel Aretha should "respect" her legacy and hang up her hat while she is still on top. With that said, I love you Aretha and wish you the very best.

There are moments of sheer genius on the album. #4 "You can't see me" and #11 "When two become one" are amazing. If you want to hear Aretha sounding like the 70's with full voiced high notes in tact, then listen "The way we were" a duet with Ron Isley on this cd. I was floored when I heard her on this.

As a few have posted, "A Woman Falling Out of Love" is a lot better than almost anything on the misguided "So Damn Happy". Several songs flow nicely and should receive spins on the Quiet Storm stations. Not sure why she chose to include her singing an unimpressive "His Eye is on the Sparrow". She still writes nice simple piano-driven ballads. Walmart did a poor job marketing this release as it was listed as "out of stock online" as early as last Wednesday. Aretha`s natural voice is still rich and beautiful. but maybe she prefers singing more head voice/falsetto (though not as vibrant and perfect as in years gone by) because it is easier for her and requires less energy. I heard her say maybe 2 years ago that she found out she had acid reflux and I know that condition can and will affect vocal clarity and range. I sang professionally for years and acid reflux basically ruined my voice several years ago.

Part 1 - Well the new album is out and I have to say it's a heck of a lot better than So Damn Happy and the Christmas album. On a scale of 1 to 10 I give the album a 8.5 I'd give it a 10 but the only reason why I don't is because all of the songs except for 2 sound excactly the same and Aretha's son Eddie singing His Eye Is On The Sparrow on the the album to me has nothing to do with A WOMAN FALLING OUT OF LOVE. Eddie should have taken the song and put it on his own album.

Part 2 - As far as the voice on a scale of 1 to 10 I give it a 8.5 Her singing on this album is a lot better than it was on the Christmas album and a whole lot better than So Damn Happy. Except for a couple of songs on this album, Aretha's "Falsetto" is a bit to much and you really can't understand what she's singing. About 95% of the singing is "Falsetto" But you can tell she took the time to really get it right vocally, especially with the high notes.

Part 3 - Plus the songs that Aretha sang in concert in the past few years that she would always say this is from the new LP aren't on the album. The way she's promoting this album is about A WOMAN FALLING OUT OF LOVE, and moving on, but a few of the songs on the album have absolutly nothing to to with a relationship between a man and a woman going good or bad. It's kinda of puzzling to me as to why those songs are on there. Maybe she ran out of songs and was just filling in the blanks.

Aretha at 69 makes these so called singers today want to sit down because the Queen of Soul sounds very good. Folks remember any singer who lives to be older in age voices change along the way. Aretha may not sound as strong as maybe Gladys Knight for I think the alto singers voices fair longer than those who sang soprano for years. This song is very nice and Aretha always knew how to sing a ballad and put that Aretha touch to it. I am so glad she's still here with us.

@Vincent50 Most singers lose power and range as they age. I saw Gladys Knight live two years ago and was astonished by how pure and strong her voice is for a woman in her mid-sixties. She is the exception and not the rule. Must be all that clean Mormon living!
