IDK about the mics, I think, if you look at their mic stands they are different, so maybe Joe's is a bit smaller or bigger of a mic, because Nick and Kevins are bendable mic stands to accomidate for the guitars... or Joe sings louder (cause he seems to when they're accapella) so his volume isnt as loud, or maybe they're just anal about having their own mics lol

And your second thought for the mics was right. That's what they do during soundcheck is get the mics volume levels right and the instruments volume right and so then if the volume is different for the mics it isn't good for them to sing into a different mic. :P
