  • thats the lid to a German canteen, i have the full thing on my self right now, perfect match (East German).

  • The cup you ask about seems to be part of the East German Canteen set:

I saw one at "majorsurplus dotcom"

If you search for canteens it will come up. Great video!

  • With that army canteen sitting on top it looks very unstable so not something i would use outdoors where a slight breeze could cause all kinds of probelms.

  • I Think That Pot?Cup thing is From Germany

  • Hi...Just wanted to ask , how long does the fuel last for?..2 or 3 times ?...I'm new at this

  • Hi Packrat i've been watching your videos for a while and was wondering what is your opinion on a stove with fuel vs a good old fire for cooking. I'am trying to decide whether to get the esbit or something like to pocket rocket. Thanks!

  • for the record, water is considered safe to drink after it have been either microfiltered through a filter small enough to hold viruses or it's reached a rolling boil for one full minute

  • how long would that whole canister last?

  • @Sage80 about 90 mins at high power

  • nice job on ur vid. i just bought MSR pocket rocket but ddn't get chance 2 use it yet. is it safe to burn sterno with it

    ? thx karen

  • Is that a snugpak response back in the top right hand corner?

  • I'm looking at getting either this or a alcohol stove. how long do the gas canisters last. how many would i need for a week long trip

  • Man I just bought a Pocket Rocket today to use for BSA and for normal camping trips!

  • How long will some of the average size fuel bottles last with normal cooking use?

  • the little canteen cup is east german, i bought one with the can teen, its pretty good, but the communist manurfacting leaves a really foul taste in the water, i also noticed that the cup its pretty weak after its first boiling of water.

  • great vid, very helpful, im looking to get one of those things myself

  • love ur vid. pls is there anyway u can send me the little military cup? would b gr8 4 me when i go out alone....i would love to have it..thx karen

  • Ya but ur indoords u have 2 acount 4wind but still nice but I like my jetboil better then my msr

  • These should not be used indoors because of Carbon monoxide (CO) build up which is odorless and highly toxic to humans. You should post a warning in the video.

  • i i need some adivise i live in the uk and i go carp fishing i dont care about weight but its price of fuel because i go fishing alot can you recomend an stove fo me?

  • the small green aluminum cup is part of an East german (GDR) Army Bottle of the NVA.

    I have one too.

You can find images of that one if you look for "NVA Feldflasche".

  • idk about your design but i found that the alcahol dosnt vaporize as well with the intilation

  • hey PackRat556. if you read my comment, i just want t oask yoiu if you could make a video on how to make a alchool stove...Thank you and loveyour videos !

  • @MrJeanCuleTaMere I have made a couple of alcohol stoves before and they work really good. If you are interested, I will pm you a link to a good design from nchiker1970. Check this out! Thanks for your interest.

  • @PackRat556

good video check out my MSR pocket rocket review with the GSI duelist.

  • Hey man, great video, I've been looking for a good small stove to purchase and you've convinced me! You on FB? Looked you up but didn't have any luck.

  • Hey man, great video, I've been looking for a good small stove to purchase and you've convinced me!

  • That’s a ww2 German canteen cup

  • that cup is part of a swedish army kit

  • the manuals are writen in Japanese, Russian, English, German, French, Spanish, and something else .

  • Great vid! I've had this stove for a while and use it often. I absolutely love it! If you are thinking of buying one, do it. You will not be sorry

  • Do you turn the stove onto max gas output when your boiling water?

  • Looks like the German canteen cup. Sets on top of canteen.

  • i wish they ran on propane

  • Packrat, you are an excellent teacher of this equipment! Thanks for all the cool videos.

  • great videos, im definitely considering this as a stove for my bug out bag, just then i would have to carry fuel canisters, but it is the fastest boil time i have seen. would you recommend this as a bug out stove, or would you lean to a solid fuel or alcohol stove? oh and by the way there is no Chinese language, it mandarin.

  • Good review man ! Full bore ? My MSR PR ? 2 mins 40 secs for a litre of water ! Great little stove and affordable too.

  • great vidio i have made lots of the aclhol stoves and it helps to use jb weld along the inside to keep it sealed also try more smaller jets and when you have got it lit put a penny in the middle to stop the midlde from burning

  • i think it's a swiss army cup (old one) and the NVA (old east german army) had almost the same...

  • One thing that could be noted is that boiling time can be reduced if you use a wider / lighter weight pot.

  • So manufacturer says you can boil a liter in 3 minutes but you boiled half that amount in 4, I don't believe you can boil a full liter in 3 minutes, not even at home, never mind in windy conditions

  • @johnmonk66 he didn't have it up all the way even at the end i don't think, i have one and have boiled a full liter in under 4 min.

  • Socalmik

Yes you can reuse all fuel with all MSR stoves

  • I have this stove and love your videos as a young backpacking enthusiast I love MSR brand stoves I have 3 the pocketrocket which I've had for 5 years, superfly 2 years old, and recently picked up a windpro. Love msr made in USA! Very durable

  • That cup looks like a maybe a ww1 idk but maybe survival vietnam?????

  • i have the stove and i have no problems.

  • This might be a dumb question but . If you dont use the whole can of fuel, can you reuse the can?

  • @socalmik the fuel can can burn for about 7 hours, so you will be reusing it about 50 times

  • Nice video, I like the glock sign and mat. I'm a springfield XD owner myself but glocks are nice too.

  • i believe the canteen cup is belgium

  • These small cups are on the water-canteen of the old east german NVA Nationale Volks Arme)

so they come out of the DDR (East germany)

  • Small surplus cup is either east or west german.

  • it wouldve been nice if you could refill the containers.

  • Belgium or Polish

  • Thanks to your video I bought one. Thanks, very cool. All your videos are very good PackRat. Keep'em coming.

  • My brother just got me this stove for X-mas and I love it.

  • Wow, man! That's a really cool little stove. Watching water boil was never so interesting! Thanks for the video.

  • "Guess it's not the most exciting thing watching water boil."

    But that's why we're here!

  • 5/5m8

  • Great stove! Nice for backpacking!

  • Can you use olso a big pan for the stove?

  • Looks either German or Swiss, I too am no expert though. Nice review.

  • thanks alot, exactly what i wanted to see before buying one.

  • This is an Awsome stove we used a Pot to boil water in on a Adventure i went on and i didt let me down thanks to you i disited to go with the MSR Pocket Rocket Thanks

  • I enjoyed this video. Good idea to keep the audience interested to tell us about other little projects going on.

  • Thank you! I appreciate all the support and kind words you have shared!

  • so how long will the 4oz cans last ya? all i got to do is boil water as i use mountain house food :D. but if im going out for 3 days about how many cans will i need?

  • I have an MSR heater too. I have used a single can in multiple 3 day trips. But it cant hurt to bring a spair.

  • I agree, one should do but I always bring 1 spare can just in case.

  • 2 cylinders will do the job if all you need is to boil the water for basically 9 meals. (3 per day) There are variables like wind, temperature, etc, but I feel confident that 2 will do.

  • just to be clear im talking about the 4Oz ones. lol and yeah if 2 should work ill pack 3 and call er good.

  • Better safe than sorry right!

  • that cop is from germany !! : )

  • Does anyone know where I can get this, THe crux, or the snow peaks max lite for less than retail price? website...

  • Pocket Rocket -what a great name! nice demonstration and extras especially the DIY alcohol stove - nice job! look forward to the video on it.

Have you tried out a PotPal to store you pots/canteens in?(see video response)

  • Thank you! I appreciate your input! I will check it out!

  • so are there any small stoves like this that you can use with the propane cans? the 16 oz. coleman ones. The MSR cans are a bit pricey for my liking bout $6 a can here

  • There are single burner stoves like that but they are about triple the size and weight of the pocket rocket. However, they are good fast cooking burners if you don't mind the weight and volume in your pack. The down side is that you also have to carry the large propane cylinders to go with it as well. Check Wal-Mart or Target, I have seen them at both locations. Good luck!

  • i think the top of it when unfoled is too small... its cool though.. i got one

  • It is kind of small but adequate for my purposes. Thanks for watching and commenting!

  • Hey Packrat-

That small canteen cup is East German.

    Great videos bro.

    Snake P

  • Thank you! I appreciate that.

  • When you buy it do you get a Can of Fuel with it ?

  • Unfortunately, no fuel comes with the stove. It must be purchases separately. The canisters normally cost around $5.00 - $8.00 each.

  • ok i get mine in the mail today but thanks tjeck out my new videos on my channel regards p.nielsne viking-survival

  • I will keep watching your channel for new videos. I look forward to them and I appreciate all the support you have given me with mine. Take Care.

  • did u say that they can run off propane?

  • Not this model, it only works with the isopropane canisters. It is a mix of isobutane and propane and has different threads for the connection than the standard propane cylinders.

  • the Light blue one isnt that the canester for the Jetboil system

  • The canister is made by Jet Boil, but the type of canister can work with any of the stove that use this type of fuel. When I bought it, they didn't have the small size canister made by MSR. Take Care.

  • Its all the same....

  • That cup looks either Swedish or German. They have a similar colour.

  • I think from what I have found, it is indeed German. Thanks for responding.

  • Looks a lot like the old East German army cup to me.

  • Yes, I believe that is correct. Thanks for watching and commenting.

  • Another great video! I feel like a stove junkie and I use different stoves for different applications. Esbit is light and simple, alcohol is a good when you don't want to lug a fuel cannister and want to travel light yet there is nothing like a cannister for simmering or baking. I prefer the optimus crux which fold flat and allows you to store it under the fuel can taking no added space & it burns hot and fast. If you are looking for a new kit amazon has them cheap with pot set. Warmly, Laurie

  • Thanks, I appreciate that. I'll check it out. Thanks for commenting.

  • russain

  • Cool stove but what happens when you run out of gas and you are still out in knowhere land? i think that stove is good for just a weekend trip with buddies.

  • I guess the stove is limited to the amount of fuel you carry. Considering the cylinder I show in this video can burn for approx. 2 hours and cook time is approx 5 mins, that equals around 24 meals cooked. That would last me around a week or so. I keep 2 cylinders in my pack thus 2 weeks of fuel. The stove is not meant to be a permanent solution, but a convenience in stressful times. Thanks for watching.

  • Ya they are great for a trip. Little pricey. I have the Esbit stove but I use the cheap trioxane bars. When I go to local gunshows they always sell 3 for a dollar and I have a buttload stuffed in my packs.

  • What's your altititude? I live in SE Texas elevation is 32ft above sea level. H2O boils here in ~3 min. or less at medium to high heat range.

  • Thanks for commenting! I'm glad to hear that your stove is still holding up after 10 years. I hope I will get that kind of service from mine as well. I think MSR does have some great quality products so that's what I'll expect from it. Take Care.

  • how long will each of those gas tanks last?

  • They are supposed to last around 2 hours depending on how high you run the burner. I will experiment and post some results as I get them. Thanks for your interest.

  • Also, I have a question. Do you prefer the esbit stove or the MSR stove? I am going to buy one soon and I'm looking for ideas.

  • Hmmm, that is a tough one. I guess that It really depends. The Esbit is a more compact option. It is also more quiet than the MSR which makes a distinctive hiss when in operation. The Esbit is probably more reliable, because there is nothing to break and no fuel canisters to puncture. The MSR is easy to turn on and off (up and down) with the fuel valve though. I guess there are pros and cons to both. You will have to weight these out to decide what will be best for you. I like having both!

  • The small 1- cup canteen cup goes with a German-Military canteen. A friend of mine bought one, complete with the canteen, the cup, and the cover for less thean 5 dollars, but the problam I see with it is it is just to difficult to access the canteen because the cup goes over the mouth, and there is a tight leather strap that goes over it, and it is just a hassle. But the cup might be good for a compact kit, although the coating on the outside will probably burn off.

  • Thanks for sharing that info! I am going to try cooking in the cup to see how the coating holds up. I will post my results here. Take Care.

  • Great videos. Thanks for posting all your videos and giving great ideas and suggestions.

  • Absolutely, I enjoy doing it especially when I hear from others like yourself who take an interest in my videos. I hope something from my channel can help you in some way. That is at least my hopes. I know so many others have shared with me and it has been a great help to me.

  • i think it might be british becuase of the way some of there cantiens are shaped .... just my ges

  • Thanks for commenting!

  • Thank you! I have several things on my list as soon as time permits. Thanks for the interest.

  • awesome overview man , i so enjoy watching your videos lol good work

  • Hey I really appreciate that! I'm glad I have the opportunity to share them and that folks like you take an interest! Take Care!

  • Hey man nice vid AS USUAL .

u have used the stove indoor, what will happen if u use it outdoor wht about the wind what will happen to the flame.i have an alcohol stove same as urs and it s wind sensitive u need to keep the wind away from it u can use food canteen to save the flame please try it outside and tell us what will happen i guess that the boiling time will be longer any way 5* thx for sharing.

  • You're probably right. With that said, I checked with MSR and they say not to use a windscreen with the pocket rocket stove. They said that the windscreen can reflect heat back to the fuel canister and possibly create a dangerous situation. This stove is basically like a blow torch with a pot stand so I don't think light to moderate winds will affect it too much. I will experiment and post my results though. Thanks for your interest and your comment.

  • its 5 mins and 15 seconds, started at 3:30 finished at 8:45

  • Thanks! I could have made this shorter if I would have opened up the burner earlier, I was too busy talking too much lol!

  • ive been to russia a lot , especially siberia and there are cups a lot like that there in army stores

  • I'd like to visit those stores...

  • The cup is German, from WW2. It fits on top of another style canteen, I bought the whole thing for 4 bucks a couple months ago.

  • I had a feeling about that. I owned another German mess kit once and the kit had this same gray "primer" looking finish. Is that original? I just hadn't seen this by itself before. Thanks for commenting!

  • You're welcome. Could you really cook with the cup though? I've been told if it's over flame the "primer" will melt off. If you're asking, all of those German mess kits are probably replicas. I'm sure you know, but you asked. Thanks for the reply!

  • The one that I had before was the "Kidney Shaped" mess kit. It also had that gray primer look to it. I used it over the Sterno Stove and it worked good, no melting. I will have to test this cup and see if it is actually functional. If not, I haven't lost too much. I'm guessing that an original Germany kit or complete canteen like yours would go for a bit more money, just a guess. Thanks for sharing. Take Care.

  • Thank you, and please try out that test for the cup. I hope to, as well. Was the "Kidney Shaped" in your sterno video? I don't remember. Maybe I'll check it myself. I think I paid 4 or 5 for the whole thing. Though I don't know what the measurment of the canteen. Ideas? You take care as well.

  • Actually, That was my US canteen cup. I looked to see if I could find that old kit but I couldn't. I think I gave it to a friend one time when we went camping b/c he didn't have his own. I remember the kettle part was nice b/c it held a lot. More than the US canteen cup I know. Thanks for sharing!

  • Maybe sometime I'll make a video myself on the German cup. You're welcome for me sharing and thanks for the response.

  • that looks prettty cool, but it looks like the mes cup was going to fall off at any second

  • I had to set it up carefully, but the cup fits into the grooves of the pot stand and actually become quite steady. The weight of the water also helps to hold the cup in place. Thanks for watching.

  • How long do you think the fuel will last ?

  • It really varies bases on how high you run the burner. The larger canister that I used in the video should provide approximately 2 hours on a medium setting. Considering you can boil 2 cups of water in as little as 3.5 minutes, that is a decent amount of service from a single cylinder.

  • nice rig! I am working on an alcohol burner too

  • Thanks, if you come up with a really good design feel free to share it if you like, I would be interested to see it. Take Care.

  • will do!

  • I was thinking about picking one of these up as the fuel canisters fit in the Maxpedition 12" x 5" Waterbottle carrier.

  • Great idea, thanks for commenting!

  • I like your vids so much, I really do. Keep them coming!

  • Hey, Thanks so much, I really appreciate that.

  • Im not a 100% but I think that might be a sweedish mess cup

  • Maybe so, I haven't found any other answers yet. Thanks for watching and commenting.

  • Nice I might have to pick one of these up!

  • Definitely worth the money if you are in the market for a lightweight stove!

  • How much $

  • I paid $39.99 for this one. I haven't seen any other comparable stoves for much cheaper than this one. I checked Dicks, Bass Pro, Gander Mountain and REI. This was the best one for the $ that I saw. Take Care.

  • Damn, Thats an amazing price for what your getting. How much does it cost to fill the bottle or are they throw aways?
