How does it sound bad? Do you know how big Sony BMG is? They would have taken ages to roll this out, with endless takes. Just look at the pricing of a 30 sec advertisement.

This was recorded in a studio, not in a theater, by Sony, who has LOTS of money. It was a lack of good taste and respect for the material that caused them to use a synth.
