@FlipidusX This was made in 2007,and the eeePC 701 was the first mainstream netbook. It took off like nothing else as it was cheap and easy to mod.

And it's far from pointless anyway- touchscreen capability on a small, light, cheap device that still has a keyboard and runs a "proper" Operating System can make it very useful!

The reason we need touch sreen on cell phone is the size, it's too small and the best way to operate a cell phone is through touch screen. For bigger things like notebooks and desktops, keyboard and mouse would be much easier.

First and by far the most obvious, It will get hot without a heatsink. Heat put's a extreme amount of stress on the Microsopic components and there circuits which greatly increases the chances of a failure, secondly anything deteriorats faster when it's at high temps, you can't really measure this though. There's more, but I'm out of characters. :-)

@mattg889 Intel CPU's have built in overheat protection where the cpu will throttle its self down to lower speeds to reduce heat generation. If Ever should a Heat sink fall off or come lose. so it wont fry the chip.

Both Intel and AMD cpus Both now have working Overheat Protection

AMD will Disconnect power to the CPU if temps get unsafe

Intel Will Throttle the the Speed if temps get unsafe

Earlier AMD Chips about 5 years ago did have a problem with the Diode not being fast enough = DEAD CPU

@hitechguy18 I know they have overheat protection, BUT in the atom the overheat protection still doesn't activate until the cpu get's above boiling or 125C. It can fry before it hits this temp, but probably won't. The atom is made to withstand up to 100C being that's its a mobile cpu.

Most desktop cpu's are rated at 70C, thermal trip at 100C.

Anything over 40C is hard on a cpu, over 70C is dangerous for the cpu.

Regardless, heat is bad. It is still not good to run without the heat sink!!
