Mainly because in Dutch the song was 'zwarte vlerk' which means 'black wing' but vlerk has another meaning which means a genuinely unkind person, an asshole so to speak.
The word is almost NEVER used to describe a wing, so I, and every other kid who saw this, always thought he was singing about a mean black person? see why we got creeped out here?
I wish they still ad this on Seasme Street today, as well as the lightning, and his laugh, oh his laugh was probably the best thing on the skit! I'm surprised I'm saying this because I watched this over 10 years ago and I am almost 15!
I loved this as a kid back in the 80's! I showed it to my 4 year old and he loves it too. We've watched together about 20 times already. Good stuff never goes outta style, apparently.
Actually, given how long the Carpathian Mountains are, he could be either Czech, Slovakian, Polish, Hungarian, Ukrainian or Romanian. Seeing as how Dracula lived in the Carpathian Mountains on the border of Transylvania, Bukovina, and Moldavia, which eventually became part of Romania, I think The Count is Romanian. =)
@Omega13X2000 Well, since you posted this a month ago, I'm not sure if you need help anymore, but I'll try anyway. He wasn't singing it with the Count though, the characters name was 'Placido Flamingo' and you can watch it here: watch?v=TpFOsuM9LeI
Classic Sesame Street at it's best. Back when the problems of the Street lasted the whole show, sometimes having three letter and numbers of a day (and I faintly remember a color and shape)
I have ALWAYS love the count!!!! Hes the BEST character sesame street has ever had or will ever have!!!! The Count is the reason why I love all things vampires. Trăiască conta!!!! (Long live the Count in Romanian). :-)
This is when Sesame Street had GREAT characters: the Count, Snuffelufagess, Guy Smiley, Oscar the Grouch, Cookie Monster, Harry and Grover the monsters, the construction worker guys. Nowadays it's too much Elmo - I've never liked Elmo.
I am so tired of people making Twilight reference jokes for anything with a Vampire or a Werewolf on it. It got old shortly after the first movie came out!
@XxM00nSHADExX: Yeah. Jerry Nelson (his performer) being sick from a bout with cancer doesn't help either. Same for the Fraggle Rock film, where it is hoped he also reprises Gobo & Majory (The Trash Heap).
It just makes you smile. I love it. There is nothing like these classics. God bless Sesame Street! 1-2-3 spread out the cape, 1-2-3 twirl 'round the floor... Ah... childhood.
I'm trying to find the scene where he gets to count the bats, and they get to count the counts.
If anyone can provide it to me, and it includes the comment "Ah, you are a terrible mirror. No reflection on you, ofcourse.", I will love you your way.
Can you help me?
P.S. If I've got two vague childhood recollections mixed up in the same scene, forgive me. If so, I want to find them both. If not, I want to find it.
@naganokumas: "You are a terrible mirror" comes from the short snipet before The Song of the Count (his theme song, outside of this song here [The Batty Bat]).

From the cold and poverty-stricken region of the Carpathian mountains to becoming an international superstar receiving top billing on one of the most popular television shows of all time.
The Count achieved the American Dream through counting.
@Squiddicus I guess he picked he right street! It probably went something like this!
Count- 41 streets... Let's see... One! One street! Ah-ah-ah! Two! Two streets! Ah-ah-ah!
~38 streets later~
Count- Hmm... All out of streets to count... I might as well live here then! Sesame Street... Oh look at all the funny looking people here! I will count them!
The Count was probably the most child-friendly vampire in the world. He was not meant to be scary, just silly and eccentric. He taught countless children that counting can be fun.

A better, if more complex name, could be:
Graph fun Count
from Graf, "Count", and von "of" pronounced "fon"
But that makes him more dutch. The dutch title is
"Graaf van", pronounced "Graaf fan"
The last name could be:
Countting, Countingen, Countenberg, Countenbach, or Countheim, Countenstein, Counthausen, Countenbad, Countenst(a/ä/e)dt, Countendorf, Countenau, Counttingen, Countho(h/v)en, Countenfeld, Countzberg, Countholz, Countwalde, Countenthal, Countlingen, Countabrück...
