I have a 1330 as well, and paid a lot for it... After just under a year (thank god warentee wasn't up yet) Had these kind of issues. The basically replaced the unit for free (new graphics card and motherboard) after about another year the same early symptoms I noticed before are happening again. Not to mention the fans are always on and at times parts of the out unit become so hot that when you touch it, it almost feels like you're going to get burnt. Chance I buy from dell again... next to none
I remember at my old school they had dell desktops that were around 3 years old in a comp. lab, and the students were always supervised. Despite that, over half of them were broken in some way. There were several where neither of the 2 usb ports on the front worked at all. Some appeared to have a flakey hard drive because files would randomly disappear. The worst I remember was when I plugged my jumpdrive into a comp & it froze, then I found that the stupid thing had erased the jumpdrive!
Dell has extended the warranty on XPS M1330 GPU related issues by 12 months and there is a new A15 BIOS update on their site. Apparently NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang and CFO Marvin Burkett knew about the issue and tried to hide it leading to a massive lawsuit.
That's your graphics card breaking. If it isn't broken yet, the heat made a flaw in your graphics card worse, and it will completely break in the near future.
That is very easy to fix. You may have a loose graphics plug in your screen. First you need to find out how to get to your screen (maybe research on how to remove/replace the screen on your model), then, once you can get to the back of the screen without completely removing it, push on the plug with the "ribben of wires". This is the plug that tranferes the image to the screen. Now put it all back together and VOLA!!
Another very bad thing about this del xps: starting from bios A11, Dell introduced a "thermal control" improvement which actually means "your fan will be almost always running at medium to max speed". This is because nvidia publicly announced a serious issue with the 8400 chip.
DEL XPS actually is VERY NOISY, and the machine is still extremely hot... I'm very disappointed.
