It's not at all uncommon for melodeath screamers to be less guttural and higher pitched than on standard death metal. Like At the Gates, In Flames, Dark Tranquility, Hypocrisy, Arch Enemy, Heartwork-era Carcass...

I don't know this guy at all or his band, nor do I like his vocal style, but it's almost impossible to find videos on this topic and he does a good job of instructing on how one might learn to do vocals while playing something more complicated than chord strumming. As for the "he's not brutal enough" argument, it's an instructional video not a fuckin live concert. Not giving a fuck would be not putting up the video at all. James hits on something here. When trying to do vocals in timing with instruments, how long the notes (of the vocal) should be is somewhat apparent to you (assuming you have rhythm...). Sometimes the most difficult part is starting the particular vocal on the right beat. Once you know which note lines up with which word or phrase, everything seems to just flow out.
