i admire you for posting the progress of all the videos, including the gristle and grit of the difficulty of these lessons. Most parents will only post the end or the videos where their babies never cry, or add music to hide the crying. Thanks for showing the reality of isr and staying thru til the end. I feell sorry for parents who quit because they can't tolerate the stress. They are compromising the safety of their kids and teaching them to opt for immediate gratification. Or be quitters
Good for you for loving your baby so much that you gave her this gift! I think people arent realizing these are LIFE SAVING coarses- not the YMCA learn to doggy paddle lessons. Ignore the parents who have no idea what they are looking at or talking about. Good parenting!
No matter what all you people think about Shannon these lessons SAVES lives. We just had another child die in Phoenix last week. He was 6 YEARS OLD and could not even swim enough to save his own life!!! We lose an average of 2 children a week because parents do not care or are afraid they might upset their precious little angel. If any of you watched all of these videos you would realize she was just MAD as hell not traumatized. In lesson 6 she swims like a fish!! Your choice live or dead child.
@TheShasiti Yeah Shasiti you sick fuck you aren't angry because you enjoy her in distress. And yes i am following you on youtube to warn parents about your rotten old ass. ATTENTION YOUTUBERS; This is the same woman who enjoys watching kids in timeout, having tantrums and lies pretends she is in CPS and urges parents to smack there kids saying its ok etc. She also says to throw a kid in a dark room by themselfs, or things like ''That child needs a ass whooping''. DISGUSTING CREEP!
It looks sort of a torture session...poor baby! I know that you want to save her life, but, can't you just play and fool around first to make her feel comfortable? Don't you first make her lost her fear for water? Poor baby, I can't keep on hearing her crying!
Are some if you stupid? Yeah the baby is crying because it's her FIRST CLASS. she is learning a SURVIVAL skill. What do you think she will do if she were to ever fall into a pool accidentally, laugh? No she will cry and will be in distress. It's important for her to know how to save her own life while in distress where there will mist likely not be any adults around. You call it abuse, I call it d@mn good patenting, way to go mom and dad!!!
I ran out of space in my last post and just wanted to add, KEEP UP THE LOVING PARENTING. You are taught your child one of the most valuable lessons she can learn and anyone who has an issue with that might want to do a ride along with Paramedics to calls where infants have fallen in. When you see that then you will see a child who is suffering, not a baby who sheds a few tears the very first time of learning to swim. Open your mind and realize the life you save may be your own little one.
Children are not all going to react the same to these courses just as they will not react the same when falling into a pool by accident when alone. Just because this child doesn't like the lesson being taught doesn't mean she won't one day fall into a pool. She deserves the same chance of survival as a child who laughs and plays while being taught to save their own life. I worked in EMS and have seen far too many children with brain damage and even death just because of not wanting to see tears
Hi there, I don't understand why peoples fuss over this video? Is the greatest gift from her Loving Parent's beside, is life saving !
Is terrible to anyones that to have exprience this kind of fatal tragic event from news and its 10 times worst if its happen to your love ones ! I exprience it first hand myself , and I bet you guys don't want to.
Your baby is the luckiest baby on earth to have you as Mommy and Daddy.
i do agree that this is teaching a an important life skill ...but my question is...can you not give the baby a lil rest and a cuddle....come on now....as a parent i can even tell the baby is distressed?
it looks like she's did a great job. lol i know she probably wasn't too happy with you haha but she'll appreciate it when she's older. you can tell she's learning how to close her mouth as well under the water.
Wow... Everyone has given you so much grief over this video... Of course a child is going to freak out the first week. The more you work with them the more they adapt. It isn't a calming experience when these kids fall into a pool. They are shocked by the sudden drop and the water. The fact that she is able to remember to swim even while in this state is a sign that she is learning the necessary tools to survive a traumatic fall and near drowning.
from an instructor who understands firsthand how ISR can help infants survive in the water, it is important to know that while the child is very uncomfortable, after the ISR course is completed they have the skills necessary to survive a fall in the water. The comments here are obviously not in tuned with a complete ISR program; I applaud your willingness to take that (potentially painful) step for the well being of your child!
wow lol i just can't believe these defensive replies, just listen to the baby, its a cry for help, sure it teaches the baby to swim, but how you taught through fear it just disgusts me, and you are probably the ones that say physical punishment is bad, this is exactly the same thing except he did nothing wrong. Just reminds me of parents who send kids at a very young age to train them forcefully to be perfect at something like in movies or in China
Ok i left a message on one of these vidz a few wks ago and i was trying to find this video to apologize, looking threw the comments i notice alot of cynical and hostile and people judging and i don't wanna be part of it, i dont want to make someone feel guilty for putting there kid in a swim class, my friend put her 4 yr old in a swim class and i wouldnt want ppl makin her feel guilty about, i'm glad the parents were smart enough to do it alot of parents just figure it would never happen.
Oh poor infant.. my heart is really torn watching this, especially at 4:44, you can tell she is soo scared and very distress and asking for a cuddle.. :(
You people are failing to realize that this baby is being taught the SAME exact way as the othet babies, she is just taking it a little differently. there are MANY MANY parents who put there babies in these type of classes, yet only a few are on youtube. Go check out the other videos, the babies are doing the EXACT same thing as in this video. And skim threw SDShannonS videos and watch how this girl Progresses and stop being so judgemental, its rude!!
@ThePressUsaTv And to SDShannonS Please Ignore all these Overly Senitive constant youtube complainers who Lurk threw baby videos and try to make a GOOD parent feel horrible so they can feel better about there own selfs!! You did nothing wrong, these people are acting like you are beating you child, they're the nieve ones and You're doing a good job as a parent!! Good luck!!!!
I wonder how many of these bleeding heart idiots in the comments actually bothered to watch the last video in the series! The child calms way down, and HOLY SMOKES has learned how to save her life in case she falls in water!
So your choice is crying baby to alive baby, or silent baby to well...permanently silent baby.
@builder20 I wonder if your the idiot who botherd reading WHAT' they were saying in the comments, they were not talking about the baby being in swimming lessons but more about the baby in destress crying barely having a chance to relax, it was obvious the babies face was red and she was beyong terrified and in distress.
@UtubeDuDeDuh Lets think here for a minute. What state of mind do you think a child will be in once they fall in the water? Will they be on cloud nine, close to state of zen? Nope! They will be under distress, and more so than this child is. When stressed you loose a lot of mental capacity, fine motor skills go out the window! Incapacitating fear is a killer. This child was conditioned to react even under duress to save her life, and at the end she has overcome most her fear.
i hope child protective services is knocking on your door soon.
you can harm a child for life in many ways..in the name of god ..in the name of safety ..whatever your excuse is, in my eyes THIS IS child abuse!.Looking at the instructions from Dr.Harvey Barnett, this is NOT how the ISR intended safety training should be at all!
@larryjew I agree like wtf, that baby looks tramatized, and wants mommy and daddy to comfort her and there just standing there Smiling and taping, that poor baby dont know whats going on, there laughing and enjoying watching the baby terrified, it makes me sick! I dont care what people keep claiming, Im just focused on the baby, POOR THING!!!!!!
That baby is not scared just MAD! She doesn't want to comply with instruction and wants Mom and Dad to rescue her! She will be fine and learn a valuable skill!!
What are you an idiot, or one of them people that like seeing kids get emotionally, mentally, and phsically tortured?,...This baby is going to have major trust issues around people near water, look how Scared she is, shes crying for her life she doesnt know whats going on, you people are pathetic if your that worried dont let her wonder near bodies of water, this is just a legal way of child abuse, pathetic people!
This video is the most disgusting thing I ever imagine parents could do with their baby. For whatever purpose of this lesson is, the girl is scared to death. The session shouldn't have been carried on and the instructor is the least capable to give good impression on her first lesson. The scene tha she clinged on the instructor's arm after 5 mins, quivering with fear, made me sick to you pathetic parents...
one of the cruelest things i've seen in my life, it's a disgrace, it's obvious torture, her head falls back under the water.. she has a mouthful of water and she's left lying on her back to choke, oh my god...
Good job at teaching your child to hate, be scared of water. Out of all the infant swimming lessons i have watched, this is the only one that distresses me, as it clearly does the child. They should be calm and relaxed, this one is probably scarred for life. Poor thing.
As has been said repeatedly in these comments, these classes have given her a love for water and a confidence in her swimming and floating abilities. She has integrated the lessons so they are instinctive - she recently had a fall into water and immediately rolled underwater and floated up on her back. There are lots of different swimming lessons out there - these are really survival courses. And I'm okay with 10 minutes of crying per day if that's what it takes to save my child's life.
I have seen the progression and she has done very well and has obviously developed an excellent skill, but my point was that in this lesson the instructor shouldn't have carried on, and, just in this lesson, the child probably didn't learn a thing as it was clearly a stressful experience. I don't blame the parents - they would have to trust what the instructor is doing (but i must say i certinly would have put an end to the lesson if it were my child).
@bryonykim I agree this one is a bit disturbing, the little girl it absoloutly petrified and with all that crying shes barely getting any breathes in, and she doesnt know what is going on, so she's looking at these people thinking they must be cruel seeing her cry and scream and they're just taping and laughing and smiling.
@bryonykim they cry like this for a couple of weeks and then they feel confident and do great. i was totally okay with my kid crying for the first few weeks. Better her than me if she were ever to drown.
Judging by the ignorant technique, redness of the child's face, screaming, and the amount of water she is SO OBVIOUSLY inhaling during this 10 minute video... you are very fortunate that you at least were not so ignorant as to continue this for any longer than that! I am a mother of four whose children have all learned to swim at very early ages, calmly, without lessons, even as infants, without tortuous, stress provoking "lessons" like this. My heart aches and my stomach wretches for this baby
This is horrible for this poor baby. She is not tarzan or enjoying this- OF COURSE she is holding on to you for dear life! This is NOT Funny, OR a "GOOD JOB". BAD choices and HORRIBLE technique!!!!! You need to add your name and address so the authorities can come and properly address this situation- which is child abuse! I agree with the concept but you people are obviously IGNORANT and CRUEL! You're very lucky she didn't inhale TOO much water from a nurse's perspective.
Ignore these idiotic comments from people who i suppose would love to see their children in danger is this situation were to arise. SDShannonS your brilliant for enrolling your child into these classes. i see this video is from a year ago, i hope all is well with your child now and she has become an excellent little swimmer.
What a terrible video I feel so sorry for this poor child. She is scared to death and you still continue. Why would anyone do this to their child? This is the most stupid thing I have ever seen. I feel sorry for every child that has parents like you.
Hey SDShannonS If you are teaching the baby lifesaving skills who is going to be in the pool with her to help her to the side of the pool like you are doing? You have taught the child nothing other than fear, torment and that some adults are less intelligent than infants.
Did you even watch the videos? The whole point is to teach her to reach the side of the pool by herself without anyone helping, which she can do easily by the end of the six-week course, even while fully clothed, as she likely would be during an accidental fall into the pool.
I fully agree it is important to teach your baby how to swim incase they fall into a pool. But there are other videos on here teaching the baby to float on their backs..../ and guess what? The babies aren't screaming because their terrified! Being put in a car seat is one thing, dunking your child repeatedly under water when they are screaming in fear is totally another! What the hell? I am suprised anyone would agree that this is ok!
Keep in mind that these lessons are a LOT more than just teaching a child to float. The whole point is to teach a child how to SURVIVE after an accidental fall into the water, exactly when a child is most likely to be terrified. And for the record, a crying child does not equal a terrified child. Kids cry for all sorts of reasons and frankly I'm just not that concerned with making sure she doesn't cry. If she's safe, and learning a skill that will save her life, and she's crying... so be it.
you obviously were a first time parent here, or just not in tune with the many various signals a child sends with each cry. No one has ever said a child shouldn't cry.. just not from relentless torture
Thanks for having the bravery to post these videos. It is great to see parents out there who care more about their child's safety than the child's absolute happiness at all hours. If my baby had her way and I weren't willing to let her cry she would never ride in a carseat.
That is horrible! a kid died from inhaling just a bit of water. He looks fine after it happened but when he went to sleep that night the tsp of water in his lungs drowned him and he died. I support pushing the kids to perform but forcing it like this is wrong
Ive been watching this for 10 mins and the child was crying the entire time. At the very end you guys realise; you wanna get out? You can teach the child an easier, more gradual approach without the torment. Look for other videos on youtube with the same subject and youll see lots of babies smiling and laughing. This was not nice.
As a follow-up, on Father's Day the baby was with her Granddad in the backyard. It was a warm day so she was dangling her feet in the pool while Granddad was pruning trees. He heard a splash, rushed over, and found her head-down, having fallen into the water. While still underwater, she kicked herself onto her back, threw her arms wide, and looked through the water up into his eyes as she floated up to the surface. She was about to roll over and grab the edge of the pool when he plucked her up.
So what is more valuable - ensuring my baby never cries so complete strangers on the internet don't think I'm a bad parent, or ensuring my baby has the tools necessary to live through unforeseen circumstances and events outside my control?
Should Granddad have been watching her more closely? Maybe. But he was close enough to have saved her even if she hadn't saved herself. Now I know that she can survive a fall into the pool at a playmate's house when I'm not there to watch her constantly.
beyronny, you could not be more wrong. Before you call these parents "stupid" perhaps you should learn how to spell. Your ignorance is magnified by putting a misspelled word in all caps. ISR is meant to give your child the tools to survive in case of a fall, not to swim. There is nothing awful about this. Do you not put your child in a car seat in case of an accident? Watching a parent bury their 11 month old baby girl is by far a more "awful" experience than teaching a child to survive
I have four children who learned to swim as infants and toddlers- without any lessons from anyone other than a calm, TRUSTED parent. Ignorance is not only of the literary type- it is also magnified by obvious 1st time parents who don't realize the theory of trust vs mistrust being taught here. ISR is good- this video representation is BAD. tough love to protect your child is not meant for infants, this child is distressed and panicked- not having a "hissy fit" due to a new, unfamiliar instructor
i hope you are not suggesting that i am an ignorant first time parent that does not know anything about trust vs mistrust. I have three children, all ISR trained. 2 taught as infants, one as a toddler. "tough love" is subjective.
this is one of the most awful things I've ever watched. This child is scared to death and these stupid damn parents don't even care/ the instructor either. I can not believe that this is happenng. There is no concern for this poor child from anyone. There are many more peaceful ways to learn how to swim. NOT THIS!!! This child will never enjoy swimming thanks to her parents and this crazy way of making a child swim. REDICLOUS!
I think it's kinda tough for the child the first time but they get used to it...it's more traumatic for the parents to see their child crying like that but they are making a life insurance for their child...
This is not mean in anyway. My 12 month old twins are in this same program, and although they were not happy the first week when they were being taught a new skill, they both now love to go to the lessons.
i don't understand why more back floating wasn't practiced. it is, however, the most important part of the lessons. if you're going to traumatize her, you may want to calm her for even a minute with the flip to back floating.
I personally think this is a very traumatic and tiring way to learn how to swim.... I learned and My son is learning to swim at 2 years old with no tears and what I would consider less forceable techniques.
i don t like .....i m swim teacher and i don t agree i like when i see when the child is happy and there are many methods to teach with love may be it takes time but the child must not cry.
The crying actually was not about the swimming - she just didn't know the instructor very well. It started before she even got into the water at all; as soon as she realized that Mommy and Daddy weren't going to hold her, she started wailing. And that doesn't mean the lessons were not conducted with love.
I noticed one of you said I think she got water that time around 4:06 and the instructor was like she did, well she should know she was in the pool with her. So I do see where love and attention might be lacking.
I'm not quite following you there, crystarrrr. Mommy noticed that she had swallowed some water and the instructor agreed. That somehow translates to "love and attention might be lacking?" That's a pretty big leap.
And I disagree with your statement that "...the child must not cry." I would not want to raise a child that was kept so cushioned and insulated from reality that they never cried. Part of life is learning how to cope with stuff that is uncomfortable, new, scary, and that makes us cry. As a parent, my job is not to ensure she never cries; my job is to ensure that she is kept healthy and safe while learning the lessons that life teaches us.

I have seen the progression and she has done very well and has obviously developed an excellent skill, but my point was that in this lesson the instructor shouldn't have carried on, and, just in this lesson, the child probably didn't learn a thing as it was clearly a stressful experience. I don't blame the parents - they would have to trust what the instructor is doing (but i must say i certinly would have put an end to the lesson if it were my child).

take a look at video 'water babies' from 'journeymanpictures' especially from 6:55
bryonykim 2 years ago
@bryonykim I agree this one is a bit disturbing, the little girl it absoloutly petrified and with all that crying shes barely getting any breathes in, and she doesnt know what is going on, so she's looking at these people thinking they must be cruel seeing her cry and scream and they're just taping and laughing and smiling.
MiSzManDyPanDy 1 year ago

TheJakes22 2 years ago 2
This is horrible for this poor baby. She is not tarzan or enjoying this- OF COURSE she is holding on to you for dear life! This is NOT Funny, OR a "GOOD JOB". BAD choices and HORRIBLE technique!!!!! You need to add your name and address so the authorities can come and properly address this situation- which is child abuse! I agree with the concept but you people are obviously IGNORANT and CRUEL! You're very lucky she didn't inhale TOO much water from a nurse's perspective.
TheJakes22 2 years ago 2
Ignore these idiotic comments from people who i suppose would love to see their children in danger is this situation were to arise. SDShannonS your brilliant for enrolling your child into these classes. i see this video is from a year ago, i hope all is well with your child now and she has become an excellent little swimmer.

Some people should not be allowed to have children.
This is just sick!
PumpkinDolce 2 years ago
What a terrible video I feel so sorry for this poor child. She is scared to death and you still continue. Why would anyone do this to their child? This is the most stupid thing I have ever seen. I feel sorry for every child that has parents like you.
Bretse 2 years ago
Hey SDShannonS If you are teaching the baby lifesaving skills who is going to be in the pool with her to help her to the side of the pool like you are doing? You have taught the child nothing other than fear, torment and that some adults are less intelligent than infants.
cgermano1 2 years ago 4
Did you even watch the videos? The whole point is to teach her to reach the side of the pool by herself without anyone helping, which she can do easily by the end of the six-week course, even while fully clothed, as she likely would be during an accidental fall into the pool.
SDShannonS 2 years ago
I fully agree it is important to teach your baby how to swim incase they fall into a pool. But there are other videos on here teaching the baby to float on their backs..../ and guess what? The babies aren't screaming because their terrified! Being put in a car seat is one thing, dunking your child repeatedly under water when they are screaming in fear is totally another! What the hell? I am suprised anyone would agree that this is ok!
jmkulin 2 years ago 2
Keep in mind that these lessons are a LOT more than just teaching a child to float. The whole point is to teach a child how to SURVIVE after an accidental fall into the water, exactly when a child is most likely to be terrified. And for the record, a crying child does not equal a terrified child. Kids cry for all sorts of reasons and frankly I'm just not that concerned with making sure she doesn't cry. If she's safe, and learning a skill that will save her life, and she's crying... so be it.
SDShannonS 2 years ago
you obviously were a first time parent here, or just not in tune with the many various signals a child sends with each cry. No one has ever said a child shouldn't cry.. just not from relentless torture
TheJakes22 2 years ago 5
COMPLETELY WRONG! These parents and the school should be processed wherever they are for child abuse.
People are just stupid. They are torturing the poor child.
TheD2D21 2 years ago 5
Thanks for having the bravery to post these videos. It is great to see parents out there who care more about their child's safety than the child's absolute happiness at all hours. If my baby had her way and I weren't willing to let her cry she would never ride in a carseat.
gayleanna 2 years ago
That is horrible! a kid died from inhaling just a bit of water. He looks fine after it happened but when he went to sleep that night the tsp of water in his lungs drowned him and he died. I support pushing the kids to perform but forcing it like this is wrong
buttegrl22 2 years ago 2
Ive been watching this for 10 mins and the child was crying the entire time. At the very end you guys realise; you wanna get out? You can teach the child an easier, more gradual approach without the torment. Look for other videos on youtube with the same subject and youll see lots of babies smiling and laughing. This was not nice.
adstube1 2 years ago 3
And if you look further in the series, you'll see this baby smiling and laughing, too. Every child reacts differently to new experiences.

SDShannonS 2 years ago
So what is more valuable - ensuring my baby never cries so complete strangers on the internet don't think I'm a bad parent, or ensuring my baby has the tools necessary to live through unforeseen circumstances and events outside my control?
Should Granddad have been watching her more closely? Maybe. But he was close enough to have saved her even if she hadn't saved herself. Now I know that she can survive a fall into the pool at a playmate's house when I'm not there to watch her constantly.
SDShannonS 2 years ago
No one is saying a child should never cry... you were obviously ignorant to your infants signals at the time of this video.
TheJakes22 2 years ago 3
beyronny, you could not be more wrong. Watching a parent bury their 11 month old baby girl is by far a more "awful" experience than teaching a child to survive
jenellejames 2 years ago
I agree. I have definitely seen the same amount of tears from
car seats, too!
markfeanor 2 years ago
I have four children who learned to swim as infants and toddlers- without any lessons from anyone other than a calm, TRUSTED parent. Ignorance is not only of the literary type- it is also magnified by obvious 1st time parents who don't realize the theory of trust vs mistrust being taught here. ISR is good- this video representation is BAD. tough love to protect your child is not meant for infants, this child is distressed and panicked- not having a "hissy fit" due to a new, unfamiliar instructor
TheJakes22 2 years ago 3
i hope you are not suggesting that i am an ignorant first time parent that does not know anything about trust vs mistrust. I have three children, all ISR trained. 2 taught as infants, one as a toddler. "tough love" is subjective.
jenellejames 2 years ago
this is one of the most awful things I've ever watched. REDICLOUS!
beyronny 2 years ago
I think it's kinda tough for the child the first time but they get used to it...it's more traumatic for the parents to see their child crying like that but they are making a life insurance for their child...

This is not mean in anyway. My 12 month old twins are in this same program, and although they were not happy the first week when they were being taught a new skill, they both now love to go to the lessons.
tjpadhya 2 years ago
were these twins your 1st children too? After 4, you learn the difference between not happy and panic/over-stressed
TheJakes22 2 years ago 2
No, these are not my first children. I am surprised that after 4 you have not learned the difference. Bless your children.
tjluhrsen 2 years ago
i don't understand why more back floating wasn't practiced. it is, however, the most important part of the lessons. if you're going to traumatize her, you may want to calm her for even a minute with the flip to back floating.

I personally think this is a very traumatic and tiring way to learn how to swim.... I learned and My son is learning to swim at 2 years old with no tears and what I would consider less forceable techniques.

i don t like .....i m swim teacher and i don t agree i like when i see when the child is happy and there are many methods to teach with love may be it takes time but the child must not cry.
martaabass 3 years ago 3
The crying actually was not about the swimming - she just didn't know the instructor very well. It started before she even got into the water at all; as soon as she realized that Mommy and Daddy weren't going to hold her, she started wailing. And that doesn't mean the lessons were not conducted with love.
SDShannonS 3 years ago
I noticed one of you said I think she got water that time around 4:06 and the instructor was like she did, well she should know she was in the pool with her. So I do see where love and attention might be lacking.
crystarrrr 2 years ago
I'm not quite following you there, crystarrrr. Mommy noticed that she had swallowed some water and the instructor agreed. That somehow translates to "love and attention might be lacking?" That's a pretty big leap.
Can you explain what you mean?
SDShannonS 2 years ago
Listen to what is said between 4:03 to 4:08.

Wow, so you're basing your entire assessment on an off-hand comment? Okay. Well, have a nice day.

we all have to survive with the parents we are given... I will pray for yours.
TheJakes22 2 years ago 2
And I disagree with your statement that "...the child must not cry." I would not want to raise a child that was kept so cushioned and insulated from reality that they never cried. Part of life is learning how to cope with stuff that is uncomfortable, new, scary, and that makes us cry. As a parent, my job is not to ensure she never cries; my job is to ensure that she is kept healthy and safe while learning the lessons that life teaches us.
