You can accidentally overpower a speaker by driving it with an amplifier that is clipping - maxed out and causing distortion, or by simply pumping too much clean power through the speaker. This was an extreme case. The speaker was damaged to begin with and without a mate (only one speaker). The tweeter had blown years ago and had major distortion even at low volume levels. The woofer, although not damaged prior to the fire, was a replacement woofer taken from a Radio Shack speaker.
