  • Sweeney Todd is another timeless musicals...like Phantom Of the Opera, Fiddler On the Roof, The Hills Of Music....u cant ever stop the musical, EVER!!!

  • this version sucks dick

  • Depp is my favorite Todd by far!

  • While not a lot of people will think this performance was good, I think it's more true to the original story of Sweeney Todd, feel wise.

Very dark, gothic, feels very real.

When I fist heard the tale of Sweeney Todd, I more imagined it dark and creepy looking just like this performance.

At least the actor playing Sweeney Todd is more alive and active than Johnny Depp.

  • srry but ths was not my fav proformance

  • I don't know why people are complaining about this, I saw it and it was one of the best shows I've seen.

  • @ritsfata Yeah, one of the best performances of anything I've ever seen in my life, done incredibly originally and aaah it was so good.

  • The only thing I liked about the revival was Green Finch and Linett Bird and how Johanna played the cello during it

  • Heh, had the angle been a little different he would have spit all over Patti LuPone.

  • chills

  • ew

  • This is shocking!!!!! No wonder it didn't do any good, they need to take a look at the Sweeney Todd production in Chichester with micheal ball now that is Tony worth!!!!

  • @foxychic33 i think it has its merits but one reason i think it doesnt work that well is because of the lack of a big orchestra. the music needs a powerful orchestra backing it up only having a cast a 10 doesnt make sense to me as the chorus makes up a lot of the singing and story telling as im assuming youd know.

  • I'm not a fan of this revival of Sweeney. I guess it was to make the show more intimate, but I felt like the story and character development was lost in the mix. John Doyle seemed more occupied with looking different as opposed to telling the story. This actor-musician approach works fine for COMPANY because it's a more intimate show. But Sweeney is an epic musical that needs big sets, elaborate costumes, a large ensemble, an even larger orchestra, and grand staging to make this piece work.

  • George Hearn is my personal favorite Sweeny Todd...

  • i HATE the revival

  • Loved seeing Niel Patrick Harris!

  • I really don't like this revival...I don't know why. I guess to me it lacks the musical lushness of the original.

  • @halfbloodprincess Really? The movie is fine, but no one beats Angela Lansbury and Patti Lupone (in the 2001 philharmonic concert)

  • @halfbloodprincess666 angela lansbury was the best

  • The man at the beginning looks like Frankenstein...

  • Powder as Sweeney....WTF......

  • @bluzcruz LMAO!

  • that woman who sings mrs. lovetts parts is disguesting ... she sounds horrible and looks even worser ... no one can top helena bonham carter - the whole movie was brilliant - johnny was awsome, alan was excellent and all the others too

  • @halfbloodprincess666 that's patti lupone she's a broadway legend but I agree this performance isn't her greatest, nor is it a good performance of missus lovett

  • @halfbloodprincess666 I bet you don't know what an auto-tune is. Johnny and Helena are wonderful in their interpretations, but the theatre interpretations leans for a callous, roughened, rather than a mellious, sweet Lovett.

  • I guess I'm just not into the way this director strips it down to bare sets and the musicians on stage. I'd rather see a full production.

  • @wilmusic14 I love Helena as much as the next person, but the accent isn't everything. Actually, with Sondheim, accent is the very last thing to consider. This isn't an easy vocal part, considering the intervals and the pace at which it needs to be sung, and unfortunately, Helena did the vocals very little justice. Not to say she wasn't lovely but it left something to be desired. And this "chick" is Patti LuPone, who is an absolute Broadway legend, right up there with Sarah and Angela

  • Worst revival I have seen.

    Origanal is ALWAYS better.

  • "The worst revival on broadway!"

  • @plodits I could read this comment a thousand times and still laugh. This and the uncle Fester one. So much win xD

  • this all looks really weird after having seen michael cerveris as an observer in fringe and the seeing him sing

  • Even the presenters are epic....

I think Joanna would make an awesome Mrs. Lovett.

  • This is very weird to me...I mean why does it look sort of moderniized? The costumes and set? It's all very...non-Sweeney-ish.

  • @Velociactor who knows why but some shows do that like i saw a production of Aida and the egyptian soldiers had guns and aida wore heel boots

  • Oh... Patti LuPone.....********

  • I'm n ot sure which one I like better...they're so hard to compare.

  • I prefer Harold Prince's version.

  • ...Is that Doctor Horrible hosting the awards again?

  • @thessie It is Dr. Horrible, but he wasn't hosting. He was just a presenter.

  • the movie scared the shit out of me

  • i reckon he looks more like voldermort

  • someone should tell patti it's not "Sweeney Toad"

  • im not a fan of patti. angela lansbury was better... actually i think that even helena bonham carter was better.

  • @WEEZERman1212 agree completly. I love the orignal cast. but I do love how they sing the ballad of Sweeney in this remake, however. I love the movie, and helena does an excelent job at lovett. She is good at being that "hidden insanity" type of character in alot of movies, harry potter etc.

  • I prefer the original version, but it is good

  • neil! :D great musical.

  • Saw it in Dallas. This production produced actual fear that swept the theatre like a tidal wave. If you payed careful attention to the lighting they made some very interesting metaphors.... it was an electric production; but how many damn things can that one white coffin represent?!?!

  • I don't like Patti's hair like that...

  • i saw this version of sweeney todd like a month before it closed

    sososossooooooo gooood

  • she must be tired of singing this song

  • This was very impressive. True Performers.

  • I think it's funny how Neil Patrick introduces Sweeney Todd, because he played Toby in the 2000 Concert.

  • lol i love her look when she says " a costumer" and "sit"

  • I love how Patti is playing the triangle! LOL

  • @jshbchr97 She also plays teh tuba. She named it Irene.

  • Haha. Love Joanna Gleason: HALF???

  • This is easily my favorite production of this show. I wish I could see it again! The orchestration makes each thread of the music sing beautifully and watching the cast move between scenes and playing instruments was like watching the inside of a watch tick with perfect precision and timing. Not only that but the interpretations are darkest and most honest here, which in my opinion highlighted the humor that much more. Can't say enough about how much I loved this when I saw it!

  • @RyJo I agree. I really believe a production in this manner suits the piece so much better than literal interpretations. It's haunting and chilling. Also, I think Mrs. Lovett is so much more interesting when she's dark and smart as opposed to daffy.

  • @RyJo I'm absolutely crazy about this production too. It was so bleak and chilling. I hesitate to say it's my 'favorite', since, well, the original's the original and I don't know if I could ever like a show more than that one. But this was such a brilliant interpretation of the show. Patti LuPone was almost unrecognizable, and just phenomenal. And Michael Cerveris was outstanding. Truly scary.

  • that is fricken amazing!

  • when sweeney todd was at ASU Gammage the cast played the instruments like this and i thought it was really cool...

  • I liked Patti better with Hearn. She seemed to be able to use her full voice in that one

  • patti can still sing god bless her. i don't like the modern costumes tho.

  • Sorry, Angela Lansbury and Helena Bonham Carter where my favorites... Johnny Depp and what's his face to, this guy does not have the dark seductiveness, he should be daddy warbucks...

  • Lol I like how Patti LuPone just plays the worthless triangle XDD

  • She plays percussion and the tuba in this production.

  • she also played the tuba during the show. just not in this video

  • great acting and vocal performance... having cast members play as the orchestra isn't the best idea

  • @sondheimfan1 agreed

  • because not only does it use up way to much stage

but none of them are good enough for it to sound like a full orchestra...

  • Yes, I suppose that's why this cast won the Tony Award for BEST ORCHESTRATION for crying out loud...

  • best orchestration isn't for the playing its for writing the orchestrations... so the cast didn't get it the person that took sondheims primitive piano pieces and wrote the rest of the instrumental pieces did... so the cast didn't get anything

  • plus its really distracting when you're trying to pay attention the rest of the show

  • Lol Sweeney looks like Uncle Fester from the Addams family

  • @Adlea13 hahahaha

  • I still have Patti's autograph from this one! One of my favorites :D

  • This is so amazing. I saw them all on Broadway. It was amazing.

  • This show was amazing when I saw it on Broadway. After hearing the music, I became an instant fan. Tobias was indeed amazing!! Also to see the great Patti LuPone!!

  • I LOVE the Tobi in the revival. He was amazing live. Gave me CHILLS.

  • Same! O.O when the video began I felt goose-bumps all over! He was quite creepy.

  • is that a modern revival????

  • I saw this version in Portland, it was nice, not the version I'm used to, though...

  • This isn't really the best representation of this production/cast. Both the blocking and the set were simplified for the Tony Awards, and considering how intricate both were in this production, it's a shame it wasn't better represented here. Also, the acting is not its best as they were rushing, and the transitions of the medley are very forced and cheesy. Just saying, don't judge the revival based on this; the production wasn't traditional Sweeney, but I found it far more profound and poignant.

  • I agree its very modern and actually limits the performers especially Patti Lupone who before rocked this role. And its sad to so everything that she created for the role stripped away because of the overall idea for this revival. I especially hated the fact the used a mezzo soprano as Pirelli because then the character doesn't make sense. Sondheim makes fun of the typical Italian/Irish tenor. And it just doesn't work here

  • I disagree. Patti Lupone's previous performance was rather bland in my opinion. The use of a women for pirelli works because it strips away all the added gimmicks (such as the parody of the italian tenor) so as to focus on the intricacies of character.

  • I think the entire show stripped to much from the original show. There is no imagery in this depicting the main theme of the entire show.

  • I agree. Some shows you see are simply amazing, then you see it on the tonys and it's like "...what??" Same with Wicked. I saw it before the tonys, then when the tony performance of that came on, everything was rushed and it didn't look and feel at all like I saw it. Some are represented very well on the tony's though! lol.

  • the revival cast is horrible ...i stick to the 1980 cast v_v

  • Michael Cerveris and george hearn are great sweeney's in different regards. BOth have powerful voice and give a different type of feel to sweeney (one is completely insane and twisted, the other a mixture of insanity and mourning). Even depp does a good job in his own way and makes Sweeny his own. None of them trump the other.

Though angela landbery is the best mrs. loveet and i have seen patty luon live.

This Toby did impress me the most * creepiest to me*, and he was very friendly too.

  • So true!! All of them play the roles so differently it's hard to even compare.

And I do love Angela Lansbery! She is the best. Only thing that's weird, is how when she speaks and sings in parts of the songs, she uses her raspy, mrs. lovett voice, then in parts of the song she goes into her crystal clear opera belt voice lol. But I guess to sing some of sondheims notes there's no way out of it! ha-ha. She's still amazing though.

  • Can someone explain please why all the costumes (especially Mrs Lovetts) are all modern-like and contempory and why is this production so weird?

  • it's a revival. it's like changed basically

  • I just saw this here in St. Louis and it was one of the most amazing things I'd ever seen. If you get the chance, you should see it. I didn't think I'd like it, but it was mind-numbingly great. :)

  • sigh...love this cast so much. They should have just released a professionally filmed DVD of this revival instead of making a movie.

  • Or as well as.

  • they should.....but now we have both!!!!

  • How do we have both? There's no professional DVD of this Revival.

  • @inlovewithJLT OH gosh ya! Totally agree! It is my favorite musical and they did such a fantastic job at it!

  • @inlovewithJLT They did!

  • @Loulars91 Um, no they didn't, unfortunately.

  • Comment removed

  • @inlovewithJLT

At least then we would've gotten "A Little Priest" done right :)

  • Tobias looks spooky in the beginning.

  • I don't like this tbh! I don't like the fact he comes out a coffin and he doesn't look like a stereotypical Sweeney Todd. Nah, not my cup of tea.

  • I liked the other Sweeney Todd musical that Patti LuPone was in, in London. The Sweeney Todd in that one was a lot better and she looked alot better in it too.

  • I agree she looks rough in this! Whats the craic with the costumes?

  • I agree with mgrchip she looks weird with black hair. isn't mrs. lovett supposed to have red hair??

  • no she doesnt have to have red hair...it depends on the director and the actor, angella lansbury had strawberry blonde hair, patti lupone - black...just because the tim burton mrs.lovett has red hair doesnt mean they automatically all have red hair. the tim burton movie came out long after this went off broadway

  • ok this right here is a great performance and all but i think judy kaye and david hess are better im sorry but i do.

  • Michael Cerveris rocks.

  • I know, he is severely underrated

  • nah.. george hearn is the all time best.

  • Sorry to say, but i think Patti LuPone looked better in the George Hearn Concert version, she looked more like a lovette than this, she looks emo

  • yes i agree

  • I'm gonna hug Patti LuPone before I die

  • I'm going to see this late in April! Yay! I still don't understand some of it though. Do all of them play intruments or is it just some of them, you know like the actors.

  • Every one of the 10 actors plays instruments. Some play more than others. When I saw it Mrs. Lovett (Patti LuPone, yay!) played the triangle and the tuba. It may be different when you see it since different actors know how to play different instruments. It was by far the best show I've ever seen. I saw this cast and they were flawless and amazing. I hope you like it! It's my favorite!

  • favorite musical ever! not the best cast but stills good

  • not the best cast? I think you are crazy. You just witnessed the genious of Patti LuPone and you say not the best cast?!?

  • ahaha! don't be mistaken okay

I LOVE Patti LuPone A LOT. But that doesn't make it the best cast ever on a critical point of view.

  • Well, I saw that particular cast on Broadway except Lauren Molina, her understudy was on that night. I thought the entire show was amazing. Everyone was great. It was a true ensemble because of the whole actor/musician they had to rely on each other. Michael Cerveris is by far my favorite Sweeney. Lauren is my favorite Johanna. Although I did not see her, from the recording you can just tell how beatiful her voice is. Her soprano is not annoying like the other Johannas I've seen.

  • agree 100x. Lauren Molina is amazing in person...she impressed me so much! beautiful instrumentalist and amazing singer. her voice is so clear and beautiful

  • yeah, I read somewhere that she used to be a backup singer for Sarah Brightman. I'm glad she's on her own doing her own stuff...she's really great. Oh and Patti is AMAZING!!!! =]

  • Wow..This Sweeney looks weird...

And Mrs Lovett looks like a tranny.

  • you look like a tranny

  • jewel looks like a tranny

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!

  • Can I ask a question, that will probably not get answered correctly, as it wud probably ruin the show for people seeing it on tour... But i'll ask anyway.. Will SOMEONE PLEASE (!!!!!!) explain what the hell is up with the little white coffin, and what happens in the show with it, etc.!!!!!!!! PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Also, because there is no set, where does everything take place, e.g. for "God that's good", etc. PLEASE TELL ME, SOMEONE!!!!!

  • The little white coffin is sweeneys famed barber chair. The act of it dropping victims to the basement is implied. I know, there's no awesome mechanic that drops people into the floor and it may sound lame, but this new revival is not about the trappings. It's about the story and music. Also that bigger coffin IS the set. It is repositioned to convey many settings. Standing in it is Sweeneys upper room, while throwing the lid on and turning it sideways makes it a counter perfect for rolling pies

  • Thank you so much!

  • Does anyone know what building this was held in?

It looks like the New York Radio City Hall?

    Anybody know?

  • Yes the tonys are always held there.

  • This is great and all, but it doesn't make sense because it appears to take place during the 20's, when the whole "Barber shaving" thing was over, beadles were gone, and noone was sent to australia.

  • it was a timeless setting - props and atire from georgan times to the 1990's -

the concept worked well and stripped it back to just the raw story

  • shut up

  • Michael is the best! We've seen him do Hedwig and Sweeny live!!!! He rocks!!!

  • hedwig and the angry inch? he did? oh awesome do you know any videos i may see? lol

  • Lol, Cerveris looks like Uncle Fester while he is getting out of the coffin

  • LOL

  • i just saw the touring company in Columbus, Ohio...judy kaye played mrs. lovett and he was amazing...the guy that played tobias was amazing...the guy that played sweeney was tobias on broadway after the OBC actor left...was Cerveris Sweeney on Broadway and Feliciano was Tobias?

  • Yup -- Cerveris was sweeney and manoel felciano was tobias. They're the dudes in this video.

Oh man, you saw the touring company?? Was it amazing?? I'm trying to persuade my rents to take us to pittsburgh to see it there in the beginning of february, but so far, no go (we're about a 4 hour drive away).

  • I saw it in SF. It was so awesome! I'd recommend it.

  • Me too! Amazing right?

  • I thought this was weird when I saw this on tv. I was like "WTF" 0_o.

  • Sweeney Todd IS weird. You thought right-on. =)

  • Shes great normally or at least in the concert version this ones...okay bc shes holding back so she doesnt overpower him

  • I dont like it changed to the 1920s I love Patti though

  • judy kaye understudied her on Broadway then joined the touring company and was absolutely amazing...in my opinion much better than lupone...

  • I'm going to see Judy Kaye in my town.

  • >:O

    i liked her hair

  • Ew...Patti's hair looks horrible.

This is a nice mix of the songs though.

  • This was such a Brilliant adaptation of Sweeney Todd! Thanks for posting this. And in response to the post below me; this is not Johnny Depp on Broadway, he did a movie version of it.

  • Awesome!! Johnny Depp is playing Sweeny Todd OH MY!
