@MoneymanMSK they used to set it upside-down because of valve mics. So that the heat would go up, and not warm up the capsule too much. Now, even without a valve mic, upside down configuration can get the cable out of the way, but is not "needed" anymore.
Proximity effect is a function of how directional the mic is and how large the capsule is. It has nothing to do with being a condenser/ribbon/dynamic etc.
I was hoping you could help. I've just bought an AT2020 USB Condenser Mic for VO at home, unfortunately it is picking up alot more unwanted noise thaN I expected. Is there any way to shorten the range of the mic so that it only picks up my vocals right next to the mic? Any help greatfully received
@saulmarron try a noise gate it will trigger on the mic when you sing into it. you can adjust the noisegate to trigger the mic on when you want to sing. being that your voice will be louder than the backround noise it will only rec when you sing into it experiment with it it should work well
Not true at all. I dont mean to pick on this guy, but consenders have a proximity effect as well. The polar pattern has more influence on how much proximity affects the bass response. Omni has the least affect progressively to hyper-cardioid having the most. DJs often use the standard EV
RE20 which IS a dynamic mic but its known for having very little "virtually no" proximity effect. Want more Bass? Use a tighter polar pattern and move the mic closer, each to taste. Its better than eq.
@TheProgmagog You're right about the proximity effect. This guy doesn't know what he's talking about. The only way to "almost" get rid of the proximity effect is to set a multipattern to "omni".
so i just picked up a condenser microphone and it won't work with my regular mic cable, is there anything else i need? or special cables?

Very informative. I recently got a condenser mic for vocals and I was using it completely wrong! ;-)

Question: what's the point of putting the mic upside down? If I have a normal stand with no cradle, is the top-up position OK?

@TheProgmagog I agree, it has more to do with polar pattern and yes, try moving your mic around before reaching for your eq and effects plugs :)
