Try running into enemies off center. It is an odd system, but repeatedly running into and backing away from an enemy is slow and ineffective. The combat was designed to be quick and seamless with you constantly making small adjustments to your position in order to plow through enemies.

I also thought that the dungeon design was great with the exception of a mine level halfway through Ys 1. You seem to have been stuck on a puzzle and refused to backtrack judging from what areas were shown.

WHAT?! WHAAAT?!?! *Ahem* Sorry for flipping out there, but have you played EarthBound for the SNES? (Yes, THAT EarthBound. The one Ness from Smash Bros comes from.) Sadly, I don't blame you for never playing EarthBound because of how Nintendo of America treated it over the years. The only two ways to play it these days is buy it (Which I highly doubt you will because the cartridge is so rare it costs around $130 on Ebay), or play it on an emulator.

the game called "To make the end of battle". Anyways, I'm glad for what you're doing but you should finish a game before you write the entire thing off. The game wasn't perfect. I agree that some things were tedious(i.e. mainly just the part in Darm tower having to backtrack from floor 17 to floor 9 or something like that. definitely wasn't fun lol). Anyways, keep up the good work and just finish it.

straight on would have gotten rid of that high chance to counter attack. The boss battles in this game were also phenomenol. They made you find the pattern, figure it out and then rape said boss. I never once had to use potions, even tho i had them. Also if you had gotten to book 2, you would have noticed they changed gameplay up a bit to depend on casting spells rather than the melee. And if you didn't complete book 1/beginning of book 2, you missed the best song in( cont next comment.)

I'm sorry I CANNOT respect the guy reviewing this game. Him calling this game "hard" by any extent is laughable. I have beaten it many many times over the years and never found it hard, even when i was 9 and having a blast. As to it being hard to manage your health blah blah blah, you managed by lvling up, getting new gear and saving often. And as to the battle system, if you were even the tiniest bit smart you would have noticed running into them anglish rather than (cont in next comment.)

Sorry if you were already informed about this, but my comment is about the passwords. Most of the time when a game has a huge password system It is because their are a lot of outcomes a player can be in. the password has to tell the game what items you have what level you are an where you left off. Still it is odd that a single game has both a password and save system.

If you had played Book 2, you'd have found that the battle system changes and allows you to use two buttons, one for magic, one for melee attacks. But you missed the point of Book 1's battle system; you're supposed to attack from the sides or the back, not hit your opponent head on.

i am not a big fan of turn based RPG's i like to progress i the story and it takes to long to move forward due to level grinding and defeating random enemies that just spawn

I take it this game is not your style of game. While I did find the game hard. I did not feel the need to cheat at any time. It was not THAT hard.

Not to mention, I do not see how the battle system was boring, when you were constantly in action all the time. Sure after a bit you can kill some monsters with 1 hit, but thats when you move on in the game and proceed to the next area.

Then there are the bosses, where you cant just kill them like any other game, you have to use strategy.

I just downloaded this game and its pretty easy once you get the hang of it. I guess this type of game is just not your cup of tea. Its kind of like a mix between Zelda and an RPG. The battle system is good because it does not interrupt the flow of the exploration

Why the hell would anyone compare Ys to Lunar? It's nothing like Lunar! Lunar is a very traditional by the books JRPG (not saying rote, just as a genre), and Ys is like Zelda.

Dude. You got the fighting all wrong. you hit them at a slight offset as if you are slicing them with your sword. Not head on although you can do the in and back motion. Once you got that the game is relatively easy.

The game has awesome music which is the main appeal. but the dungeon mazes arent the hardest.. usually only 3 levels with the end dungeon 6 or so. The boss fights are also challenging yet rewarding making.. they are hard but once you will love this game.

Any remake has yet to compare to the tg16 version. Despite the combat style (which i still enjoy and yes "TheGacko" is completly right,

this guys playing it tactlessly) the music is charged throughout and this game is never boring.

I also have to agree here - Lunar 2 was okay, but the cutscenes (at least in english) were laughably awful. While I enjoyed it in high school, I think it's a far cry from the "best" rpg ever made, with multiple titles of it's own era and before blowing it out of the water in story, gameplay, and innovative ideas. The first Lunar is far from a 2nd place game. I'd say Lunar - Below average, but lunar 2 - above average for sure.

Ys is great but the 1st part is much slower paced than the second, gets a lot more interesting with the fire magic.

Ys 1 feels more like a prologue than a full game. You'd probably like the 2nd half a lot more.

Dragon Song was awful.  They penlized you for running, you couldn't target enemies, the story was eh, and the battle system was too confusing and took to long to kill enemies.
