BOTCON was successful before Michael Bay's movie adaptions also you have Dreamwave's comic series that came out before the films as well. And you had the original series released on DVD box sets in 2005 and the 20th anniversary movie in 2004. The reissue of the original toyline also helped introduce Transformers to a new generation of fans. Bay merely furthered along what was already established.

@ffxmmx People are still giving the second movie a tongue lashing for the two "ethnic" Autobots featured. He tried to sell sex unnecessarily and people didn't like it. Robots do not hump, it's that simple. I have watched and been a Transformers fan since they debuted Sept in 1984. And I was disappointed with the second movie's weak plot. Luckily, Bay turned it around with a solid plot in Dark of the Moon and no racially offensive robots.

2: megatron could have returned as galvatron but they never wanted to do that.

3: the dinobots were supposed to be introduced in rotf, but bay said that it wouldn't make sense. in the movies they do take the term "robots in disquise" seriously, so dinosaur-modes are shitty disquises. however the way they were supposed to be introduced is pretty interesting and explaines the dino-modes.
