@tolduso549 That's sick my mum is obese but not because she eats too much she has a heart arrhythmia (heart don't beat properly) and she has to take loads of fattening tablets (ibuprofen etc) and if she took the stairs she may die from her heart beating so out of rhythm, so it isn't a plan to stop the obese!!!

Well, when the original escalator there was installed, there were fewer obese people. At one time 16 inches was the standard for escalators, especially "low traffic" ones, but they probably installed the narrow one at this subway station to be cheap.

The sidings and deflector brushes are new, and ditto the steps (which are custom ordered), but only because of the dimensions of the old escalator is this one like that.

Many years ago, in the long ago time, during the 1960s, we would go Christmas shopping in downtown Cleveland, Ohio. I believe it was the Higbee department store that had narrow escalators near the top floors. The bottom floor ones were the regular steel ones with narrow grooves. Higher up the escalators became narrower, the steps were wooden with grooves about 1" wide. The narrowest one was as wide as the one in this video.

Actually the early escalators were all that size.

The reason for this was that in the early era escalators were added later and by the time the machinery was added there was not that much room remaining.

It's an old design.....16 inches......only a few places in Chicago and Boston have them...the escalators are generally new, but modified for the old design. The thought of building even a "one-person" (20-something inches?) wide escalator in a transit station these days is UNHEARD OF!

I've been there like 5 times and every time with luggage from the airport (the escalator is part of a train stop on the way to/from the airport) i needed to use the stairs because the luggage was too wide, it was a huge hassle

That esclator is an old one and thanks to anti-discriminatory laws, those type can't be produced.which I think is a waste of money. Skinny escalators like this one are safer in a way due to that the rider can have access to the handrails on both sides. Today's escalators are fatter than the one in the video, and some are designed to where you can't get ahold of the handrail.

There's some old wooden escalators on the upper floors of the Kaufmann's (now Macy's) in downtown Pittsburgh that were just as narrow as this... they werent running when I last went, back in 2006.
