I was in the 1/73, which became the 1/63.....I think. Long time ago. M60A3 tanker 19E. I loved the M240. The fact that it had a 10,000 ready of ammo was the coolest thing. The M85 was a POS though. I loved to hear it on the higher rate of fire, but the handle to fire it was so cheap. I look back now and feel I missed out on Iraq. Looked like a cakewalk. Great vid.

the A2 doesn't need rifling, it IS smoothbore. Most of the rounds themselves are rifled, such as sabot and whatnot, so they're VERY accurate.

APFSDS are not rifled. The spin removes KE energy from the penetrator and thus lowers it's effectiveness. This is why they use fins to stabilise.

@ZO6George It is smooth because the round is just too big and rifiling the barrel would not give the abrams the kenetic energy i would need to puncture another tank, also the electronics on the tank compensates for the loss in rifling by being able to accuratly predict where the round will land, so in a sense, the tank is one of the most accurate on the battlefield

The M1A1 is a great tank but overall the challenger 2s armour and gun is superior, the only problem being only 400 challenger 2s are in service compared to thousand of abrams. I think over 20 abrams have been destroyed by enemy fire in both gulf wars compared to no challenger 1 or 2 tanks.

Actually the M1 has a lot in common with the German Leopard2A6, the cannon is the same and it's agility in terrain was supported by the German engineers. I am not a fan of saying this or that tank is better as it always comes down to the tanks specific equipment, it's the same with fighter jets..the one with better radar and weapons wins, the machine is just a platform.
