i have a silver 5 door 1.8 vti. quick as hell. i love it. foot down in 2nd gear, 6,000rpm comes along and WALLOP d.o.h.c v-tec power. it'l let you rev to very nearly 9,000rpm. and it'l do between 130 and 135mph. whats not to like? shown up many a boy racer in my normal looking family hatchback, them in something like a corsa, cleo, saxo, with their stereo blasting, loud exhaust, cap on backwards. lights change to green....... BYE BYE now. (woosh)
the 1996-2000 Honda Civic was assembled in Swindon, England Suzuka, Japan East Liberty, Ohio, United States Alliston, Ontario, Canada Lahore, Pakistan Aragua,Venezuela Sumaré, Brasil South Africa Hsinchu, Taiwan Nelson, New Zealand Gebze, Turkey
@Annihilator1111 The Civic 5 door was never assembled in South Africa (never available in SA either). The first Civic badged Honda to be assembled in South Africa was the EK9. The 4 door Civic (2nd Gen to 5 Gen) was badged Ballade in South Africa as it was a well established name going back to 1981, when Mercedes Benz SA introduced it to the market. The Ballade name was dropped in 2001 with the introduction of the 7th generation Civic (EM2)
@MrCivichatchback Of course not, no. Honda was marketed in SA under licence through the Mercedes Benz network from 1981 to 2000. They mainly sold the Honda Ballade (Civic) with various engines and trim levels. It was sold as a premium Japanese vehicle to compete against the Corolla, Sentra, Jetta and Mazda 323 and later Mazda Etude. Through clever marketing strategy and the MB association, Honda was viewed as premium against the other Japanese cars available.
There were no seperate dealerships. You bought your Honda from a Mercedes forcourt and as expected, you were treated like a Merc customer. Excellent service, great aftersales services. The showrooms were immaculate, adding to the premium feel of the car. I have compared Civics in UK to what was available in SA. Very different. The quality in SA was far superior due to the fact that MB was involved.
@MrCivichatchback Oh yes. They call them showrooms, not car lots! :)
Indeed, you would walk into a showroom and on the floor would be Mercs and Hondas. All nice and shiny. The idea in those days (in South Africa) was that you buy a Mercedes for yourself and your wife gets a Honda. It was the ideal second car. We all know Hondas are great cars...in SA they were even better because Mercedes built them.
@monk3yboy69 Wow! So they even built them back then over there? I wonder if the quality was different, better/worse. That's neat to know they were built by Mercedes at one time.

mines the 1.8vti model in silver similar to the Restorer's car as in the video, its simply the best. Why wont they make something like this anymore rather than stupid hybrids and cheap under refined cars of today.
You gotta be kidding me with this awesome wood grain on an old Civic? Our Accord's back in 96 didn't have woodgrain. Weird.

I say you don't want to drive something else once you drove one of these.
Exceptfor another Honda then. ;)
