This was the much more commonly used way of rounding tight curves. It was called "sixes and eights". On the whole length of the train was a big chain going down the middle between the 20 mules and each set of mules loosely connected by singletrees. The 2 mules closest to the wagon remained in the straight ahead position while the next six on command would step over the chain and would pull at almost right angles to keep the chain tight while the rest of the mules would round the curve! curve.
