The Russians beat us to space so we knew they could make it to us with a missile. Sputnik added the uncertainty that they could orbit a nuke and drop it on us in minutes. If the Russians launched an attack with ICBMS then ours would be anniahlated because they took hours to fuel. The Minuteman...launched in 58 seconds form war order . . locked down the MAD stalemate.

@TheMrTTT Interestingly though by 60 the russians were miles behind in ICBM's. The R7 which took about 24 hours to get ready was pretty much useless. SAC B52 could get to their launchers long before they flew, and the soviets had only 16 lauchers by 60, all massive and above ground. After the nedlin castrophe which set their new quick fuel launcher back several years, they put short range missiles into cuba as a misguided stop gap and almost triggered WWIII.

The only advantage the soviets had during that event was their missiles in Cuba. @TheMrTTT Well, u know, the soviets gained during the '70s, with the introduction of the SS-18 ICBM the 1st strike capability, which Russia has inherited. The US never had & never deployed such a capability.

As for the Minuteman, that was a light ICBM, it wasn't suited to replace a heavy ICBM like Titan. Solid fuel ICBMs should've been developed for that. The Minuteman, if the politicians wanted so bad, should've been deployed on rail garrisons as SAC recommended.

Talked to the guys in our museum and the normal nuke was a 7 MT yield warhead. Also have the warhead bus and the missile in the silo in our museum. Neat stuff...................for a nuke!!!!! LOL!

@koolyoh213 The Titan II could carry. There were proposals from the military to designs an ICBM version of that 25 MT warhead that was put on the B-41 bomb, but the politicians rejected it... The USAF also claimed in 1963 that they also could've built a 35 MT warhead which was also 1 tonne lighter that could've been fitted on the Titan II. Of course, the development of that warhead also didn't receive the go ahead from the politicians.Too bad.

@LoSeRLuCk1 Not really. The soviets had a great first launcher in the R7, but it was a lousy ICBM. The genius of kennedy and his advisors was to reset the race, and aim for a target that both sides would need to build a new launcher for. The USSR never took the change in target seriously for 3+ years, then started late with no clear mission mode, devided management and inaddequate budget. The launcher they developed was too complex and was underpowered in reality.

They spent A LOT of money on something useless, when they could spend those money on building up the military and developing spy satellites 2 spy against the Soviet Union. @StiviGun1 R7 was essentially the same as the Soyuz launcher you see today. 4 strap on liquid boosters around a single liquid core. All using Kero and LOX. 4 engines (I think 1 engine with 4 chambers actually) on each of the boosters and core. Difference between R7 launcher and ICBM was launcher had upper stages. Launched Sputnik, Gagarin, Vostok, Voshod, most of the early Luna probes and Soyuz to this day. Lousy ICBM as took 24 hours to ready and fuel!!!!

@DumbYankies Yeah, the R-7 was a lousy ICBM. This was 1 of the ICBMs (27 of them compared to 200 on the American side) that the soviets had in active service when the Cuban missile crisis started. The Russians were pretty far behind the US in ICBMs development & deployment. That's why Kennedy was a pussy 4 not bombing the soviet missiles installations in Cuba. If he would've done that, the Russians would've had nothing left 2 respond with, their ICBMs were too primitive.

@StiviGun1 The russians indeed had very few ICBMs at that time, and the R7 having 24 hours fueling and like only 10 launchers at peletsk and 2 at bykanour was a joke. US had Titan 1s operational in droves, lots of atlas's, I think maybe some early titan 2's and like two flights of minutemans 1's with like a 1 minute launch time. USSR did have some sub launched stuff and a fair number of bear bombers. But it would only take one to get through to ruin the day of millions of registerd voters....

@StiviGun1 agreed. soviet subs were surface launch only and i think they had like three missiles in the sail only. No-way comparable to the george washington class. But the problem is all this is exactly why kurschev put the missiles in cuba to close the gap. And by the time the US had detected them and was in a position to act, there was no way of being certain you could get them all, and all the subs and all the R7's before launch. So they had to deal and got a reasonably good one.

Those missiles were liquid fueled missiles that took hours 2 get ready 4 launch. +, the warheads of those missiles r never carried inside the missiles, so putting them on the missiles takes some time too. Not even during the Cuban missile crisis they didn't have the capability to do this from their own home. All they had ware those IRBMs in Cuba, but Kennedy wasn't able to take even that thin advantage away from them... He simply let the Russians putting fear into America.
